COURSE SUMMARY: In this course, an attempt is made to explore the different senses in which the term ‘Applied Linguistics’ is employed in current scholarship. As part of
this endeavour, we will focus on the following aspects of knowledge which are thought to constitute the subject.

1. The notion of ‘Applied Linguistics’ and the areas of knowledge that constitute applied linguistics as a discipline
a. Definitions of applied linguistics
the study of language as it affects situations in real life, for example in education or technology
b. Language, linguistics, and applied linguistics
c. Areas of concern of applied linguistics
d. Foreign language teaching in applied linguistics

2. Language & linguistics and foreign language teaching


a. Definition of language and linguistics
b. Phonetics & phonology
c. Morphology
d. Syntax
e. Semantics & pragmatics, and other related issues
f. The relationships between linguistics and foreign language teaching (FLT)

3. Sociolinguistics and foreign language teaching


a. Definition of sociolinguistics
b. Key concepts of sociolinguistics (language vs. languages, dialect, idiolect, lingua franca, pidgin, social dialect, register, etc.)
c. Bilingualism, biculturalism, intercultural/cross-cultural communication, language and power, language and gender
d. Language planning and language policy
e. Englishes in the world and English in Vietnam
f. The relationships between sociolinguistics and FLT

4. Psycholinguistics and foreign language teaching


a. Definition of psycholinguistics
b. Key concepts of psycholinguistics (language comprehension, language production, language acquisition, etc.)
c. First language acquisition (FLA)
d. Second language learning (SLL)
e. Factors affecting second/foreign language learning
f. The similarities and differences between FLA and SLL
g. The relationships between psycholinguistics and FLT

5. Foreign language curriculum and syllabus design and foreign language teaching

10. Presentation of a research: subject to candidates’ request

ASSESSMENT: Performance in the course will be assessed on the basis of the student’s attendance and three assignments: (i) an oral presentation of one of the issues listed
above at the lecture seminar as agreed upon by the lecturer and the student-presenter and (ii) a written mid-course assignment on the analysis of some applied linguistics aspects,
and (iii) a final written assignment on one of the topics which will be given at the end of the course.
Rating procedure is as follows:
- Attendance & participation: 10 points (10% of total marks)
- Assignment 1: 15 points (15% of total marks)
- Assignment 2: 15 points (15% of total marks)
- Assignment 3: 60 points (60% of total marks)
