Merchants of the Dark Road Reference

Main Board Setup

1. Place 4 random buildings on main board spaces.
2. Roll 1 market die and set the market wheel so that the die’s face is valued at $5 (top left of main board).
3. Place 1 market die on its matching space on the market wheel for all spaces except the $1 to the left of $5.
4. Shuffle the 6 Commission stacks and place them face-up on their spaces (top middle of main board).
5. Place Ruins of Yin marker on the bottom left space (top right of main board).
6. Stack the wagon upgrade tiles (remove 2 randomly for solo) and $5 near the Good Fortune track (bottom right of main
board).
7. Place the Dark Market marker on the bottom space (bottom middle of main board).
8. Shuffle the non-starting Hero cards, place the deck on its space, and place 4 Heroes face-up (bottom left of main board).
9. Shuffle Companion cards, place the deck near the main board, create an offer of 3 cards, and place a travel die on the
rightmost card.
10. Shuffle the Dark Road / Shortcut event decks separately and place them near the board.
11. Shuffle the Deed deck, place it in the center of the board, and place 2 cards face-up in their spaces.
Player Setup
1. Each player takes $5, 1 wagon board, 1 wagon meeple, 1 prestige marker, 7 night dice, 1 illuminated die, 1 horseshoe, 1
player screen, 1 random Steed, and 1 random starting Hero + its bonus.
2. Place wagon meeple between Ringway Inn and Great Bazaar (middle left of board).
3. Place wagon prestige marker on 0 space of the prestige track.
4. Place 3 night dice in the 3 lock spaces on the wagon board, with the faces set to 1, 2, 3, left to right. Roll the illuminated
die and the rest of the night dice. Place the night dice below the locked slots and the illuminated die in the pool to the left.
5. Draw 1 Deed card from the deck and keep it hidden from other players.
6. Determine the starting player, then each player takes 1 good of value $5/4/3/3 and $0/1/2/3 money for player position
1/2/3/4.
Private Concern AI Setup
1. Flip an unused wagon board over to the Private Concern side. Shuffle the action cards and place them on the wagon
board.
2. Give the AI $5 (behind a screen; you can never count how much money the AI has), 1 random face-down Deed, a random
starting Hero and its bonus, and an illuminated die.
3. Place the AI’s prestige marker and goods marker on the 0 space of the prestige track. Place its wagon meeple in the
same place as yours.
Player Rules to Remember
● Crafting via leftmost dice slot: Use the newly locked die, not the bumped die. During the final 3 rounds, gain any basic
good instead of using the chart.
● Moving: use the bumped die or the illuminated die, not the newly locked die.
● Market Wheel: Maximum 2 dice per space. Reroll dice that break this rule.
● Buying 2 goods of the same type: If you buy 2 of the same type of good in one turn, the 2nd is free.
● Travel Events: If you chose the Dark Road, you choose a travel die first. If Shortcut, the player to your left chooses first.
● Good Fortune: The first time money is claimed via good fortune, gain $5 instead of $3. Max 1 wagon upgrade per player.
● No dice left in reserve: Remove 1 of your spent night dice from the game, reroll the rest, and place back in your reserve.
● Final 3 turns: Your turn flows the same as usual, but you will not have any night dice to replace the bumped die.
● End of Game: Each player may make one final travel (other players may not join), but skip all steps except delivery.
Private Concern AI Rules to Remember
● Traveling with you: It travels with you whenever it has a matching Hero / Commission or at least 1 lantern.
● Shortcuts: It always spends 3 Lanterns to take a shortcut when possible.
● Travel dice: It always chooses the highest travel die available and never spends Lanterns to reroll.
● Companions: It does not keep Companions; it merely places them at the bottom of the deck.
● Upgraded Goods: When gaining an upgraded Good, instead gain 1 Good and 1 Quartz.
● Town Priority: most Commissions + Heroes -> most Commissions -> your choice
● Commission / Hero Priority: Prefers one matching the town it has the most of, otherwise you choose.
Final Scoring
● Players = Lower of money / Prestige + VP from Deeds, the 2 VP wagon upgrade, and 1 VP per illuminated die.
● Private Concern AI = Lower of coins / Prestige + 1 VP for each Quartz, Lantern, Deed, and illuminated die.
● Tiebreaker: Highest of money / Prestige not used in final score -> most gifted Quartz -> most delivered Commissions ->
most delivered Heroes
