Company History

1917: Jan.

Takeuchi Mining Industry (founded in 1894) established Komatsu Iron Works to manufacture machine tools and mining equipment for in-house use. Komatsu Iron Works separated from Takeuchi Mining Industry to become Komatsu Ltd. Komatsu built its first press, a 450-ton sheet-forming press. Produced Japans first crawler-type farm tractor. Began production of high-grade castings and special steel materials after years of research.

1966: Mar. Completed construction of the present Tokyo Head Office (Komatsu Building). 1967: Jan. Established N.V. Komatsu Europe S.A., Komatsus first overseas subsidiary in Belgium.

1968: Oct. Began production of hydraulic excavators. Dec. Completed construction of an integrated production facility for diesel engines at the Oyama Plant. 1970: Feb. 1971: Jan. Established Komatsu America Corp. in the United States. Established Komatsu Singapore Pte Ltd. in Singapore.

1938: Mar. Established the Awazu Plant. 1941: Nov. 1943: Jan. Began production of large hydraulic presses.

1972: Dec. Launched the business of small presses. 1973: Apr. Completed construction of the Himi Plant for steel castings.

Produced the Komatsu Model 1 Ground Leveling Machine (the prototype of Japans bulldozers). Dec. Completed construction of a large press-assembly shop at the Komatsu Plant.

1974: Sep. Established Dina Komatsu Nacional S.A. de C.V. in Mexico. 1975: Apr. 1977: Oct. Komatsu do Brasil Ltda. produced the D50A bulldozer, marking Komatsus first offshore production of construction equipment. Marketed the small-diameter pipe jacking system.

1947: Dec. Introduced the D50 bulldozer.

1978: Dec. Established Komatsu Australia Pty., Ltd. in Australia. 1980: Jul. 1948: Feb. Began production of diesel engines. 1981: Nov. 1951: Aug. Relocated head office from Ishikawa (Komatsu City) to Tokyo. 1952: Oct. Opened the Osaka Plant. Oct. Began production of motor graders. Dec. Established the Kawasaki and Himi plants following the acquisitions of Ikegai Automobile Manufacturing Company and Chuetsu Electro Chemical Co., Ltd., respectively. 1953: Jan. Nov. Began production of forklift trucks. Began production of dump trucks and special-purpose vehicles. Developed a super-large combination press line. Received the Japan Quality Control Prize.

1982: Dec. Established PT Komatsu Indonesia (production began in 1983) in Indonesia. 1984: Mar. Introduced laser machines on the market. 1985: Feb. Established Komatsu America Manufacturing Corp. in the United States. Aug. Established Komatsu America Industries LLC in the United States. Dec. Established Komatsu UK Ltd. in the United Kingdom.

1954: Mar. Began production of shell-mold precision castings. 1955: Jan. Exported motor graders to Argentina (Komatsus first export of construction equipment). Aug. Exported 400-ton multipurpose hydraulic presses to Argentina (Komatsus first export of presses).

1986: Aug. Established Komatsu Industries Europe GmbH in Germany. 1988: Sep. Established Komatsu Dresser Company in the United States. 1989: Jul. Equity participation in Hanomag AG of Germany. Dec. Established Komatsu Europe International N.V. in Belgium to coordi-nate and expand Komatsus operations in Europe. 1990: Dec. Completed construction of a leading-edge FA facility for hydraulic equipment at the Oyama Plant. Dec. Completed construction of a leading-edge FA facility for hydraulic excavator assembly at the Osaka Plant. 1991: Mar. Introduced a new corporate brand logotype and issued a corporate policy statement. Oct. Established NS Komatsu Pty. Ltd. in Australia (renamed Komatsu Australia Pty. Ltd. in June 2001). Nov. Completed construction of casting plant at PT Komatsu Indonesia. Nov. Equity participation in Fai S.p.A. in Italy. 1993: Sep. Established Applied Komatsu Technologies, Inc., a joint venture to produce LCD manufacturing systems, with Applied Materials, Inc. of the United States (sold to Applied Materials in October 1999). Oct. Established Komatsu Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. and Cummins Komatsu Engine Company.

1956: Sep. Began production of shovel loaders. 1958: Sep. Signed a technical assistance agreement with Indias Ministry of Defense to locally manufacture tractors. 1961: Sep. Introduced the company-wide quality control (QC) program. Nov. Signed a technology tie-up agreement for diesel engines with Cummins Engine Co., Inc. of the United States. 1962: Dec. Opened the Oyama Plant. Entered technology license tie-up with Bucyrus-Erie of the United States concerning hydraulic excavators (terminated in March 1981).

Executed a basic agreement to jointly advance the Bio Diesel Fuel Pilot Project in Indonesia with PT Adaro Energy Tbk and PT United Tractors Tbk.

Founded "Newberry Manufacturing Operation,"a facility for utility equipment, in the United States. Mar. Five plants in Japan achieved "Zero Emission." Apr. Established Komatsu Italia S.p.A. Apr. Signed a letter of intent with Volvo Construction Equipment for the production of wheel loader cabs for Komatsu. Oct. Komatsu Forklift and Komatsu Zenoah transformed into wholly owned subsidiaries. Oct. Reached a basic agreement with Hitachi Construction Machinery for collaboration in production and procurement of construction and mining equipment.
