The Giver

This book gave me a lot of things to think about along with things that we considered
granted in our life that weren't in the lives of the characters in this book. The shocking truth
that the book revealed about the true power of fear was both horrifying and gruesome, but
the worst thing was that everyone was completely unaware of the horrifying things they did.
This was the reason why I couldn’t understand the motivation behind all the people who lived
in this story. It contained things that nobody thought would be possible.
The story started with the main character living in a world full of stillness, and his
name was Jonas. As most normal boys his age would be like he was playing with his friends,
but he was also very anxious. The reason behind that anxiety was revealed the night before
his family went to bed as they shared their feelings about the day. Jonas had a hard time
expressing the feeling into a proper word but he managed to call it apprehensive, and
confessed that he was feeling this way because of the upcoming ceremony of twelve. He
also mentioned that the ceremony was the day where every twelve year olds was given their
future jobs and life.
Later on Jonas’s family was given a chance to take care of a third child who was
weak during birth, and was preparing to be released. Thankfully, Jonas’s father who was a
nurturer managed to convince the elders and bought time for the young child to grow healthy
again, and was brought to Jonas’s house for caring. Finally when Jonas was ready for the
ceremony of twelve he was chosen as the Receiver of memories and was brought for
training to the giver. The giver was a very old looking man with a heavy burden that was the
memory of humanity, he taught Jonas how to hold on to the memories, and the history of
what was once their daily life along with war. Realizing the truth, Jonas tried to grasp the
reason why they no longer had colors in their life or the right to choose their own future as
well. Finally, he witnessed the truth of what everyone called release by the hands of his own
father who killed a young child, and Jonas planned to force the community to solve their own
problem of memories by themselves with the help of the giver. In the end, he realized that
the young baby he had come to love was going to be released by his father as well, and he
escaped the community with the baby boy along with him.
This world that Jonas lived in was protected by all kinds of fear by the receiver of
memories who was forced to remember all the memories that everyone else was afraid of,
and endure the gruesome and horrifying parts as well. As a result, the young girl who was
chosen as the receiver before Jonas had willingly chosen to be released by killing herself. I
think that was the reason why Jonas was so angry that he chose to release all the memories
he received, from the giver back to the people. He wanted them to deal with the
consequences of their actions instead of leaving them to be dealt with by a new receiver
every time.
I was also terrified by the mention of killing babies just because they didn’t listen to
people or were identical with another baby. Especially when people did it as if it was the
most natural thing in the world that needed to be done. It was simply outrageous to do
something like this without even realizing that it was horribly wrong. All in all I think the book
wanted to tell us that ignorance could lead to something horrible like the people who lived in
this book.
