Chapter 1

In this chapter we learn about the society Jonas lives in, it is really structured,
with many rules and the worst fate for any citizen is being released. The story started
with a pilot piloting an aircraft over the community (which was not allowed), which
caused the pilot to get released. At dinner, Jonas’s family talks about their day and their
feelings, they each share about their day and at the end, Jonas’s parents ask Lily to
leave so that they can talk with Jonas privately.

Chapter 2
The chapter starts off with Jonas’s father remembering his childhood. As the
chapter progresses we learn about the Ceremony of Twelve, which is a ceremony in
which kids get assigned their job, and we learn that only 50 kids are born per year and
father is able to take a sneak peak to the naming list before it gets publicly announced.
We also learn about a couple other rules such as that you can't have a comfort object
after you turn 8 and that you can't ride a bicycle until you are 9 (which is a rule that most
people break).

Chapter 3
In this chapter we can see that Lily is not prudent and thinks out loud. She sees
the baby Gabe very cute and notices he has light eyes, such as Jonas (everyone in the
community has dark eyes except them). We also learn that there are no cars in the
community, just bikes. Lily states that she wants to be a birthmother, which her mom
automatically disagrees with because she tells her that after the 3 pregnancies they are
allowed to have, they are bombarded with hard work. Jonas also lets us know that there
are some loud speakers that always make announcements on what someone is doing
wrong (like Lily’s ribbon example or him taking an apple home from school).

Chapter 4
In this chapter we can see how Jonas is working to get more hours for the
ceremony, he works at the house of the old. Here he learns about the release there was
earlier that day, an old man named Roberto was released due to old age, which is not
considered disgraceful. In the house of the old, Jonas is showering an old lady, which
makes him remember how his dad bathed the baby Gabe last night. The rule “no being
naked” didn't apply to babies and elder people.

Chapter 5
In this chapter, Jonas and his family are having another ritual, where they are
sharing their dreams. Jonas shares his dream of being naked in a bathtub and seeing
Fiona and asking her to join him. His mom tells him that what he experienced is called
“Stirrings” and it's related to puberty. She told him that he must report every time he has
a “Stirring” because she has a pill that makes them all go away. Everyone takes those
pills everyday until they end up in the House of the Old. Jonas liked having a “Stirring”
and wants to feel that way again, except he took the pill so he forgot all about the
dream.

Chapter 6
The chapter starts off with Jonas and Lily getting ready for the ceremony. In the
ceremony Jonas observes that all the families had arrived, as mom takes a seat in the
crowd and dad goes to the other Nurturers to take part in the naming of the ones. Gabe
is not in the ceremony because he isn't fully developed yet and isn't ready for this.
Father won 1 more year with Gabe in the family to give him time to be ready and not be
released. Asher tells Jonas about the boy who left the community because he was
unhappy with the job he got, but Jonas considers this a Myth because he doesn't think
the Elders would ever make a mistake.

Chapter 7
The chapter starts with the ceremony of 12. All the kids are lined up in order on
who was born first, Jonas is number 19. Asher, number 4, got assigned Assistant
Director of Recreation. Fiona, number 18, was assigned Caretaker of the Old, which
everyone saw fit. When the Elder gets to Jonas, she skips him and the crowd was
surprised, while Jonas wondered what he did wrong.
Chapter 8
In this chapter we start off with the Elder apologizing for skipping Jonas. She
explains that Jonas had been selected to be the next Receiver of Memory, after the last
one chosen to be the heir failed and made everyone uncomfortable. She says that
Jonas will be trained by the current receiver (an old man), and starts to say all of
Jonas’s talents (Intelligence, courage, integrity, and soon wisdom). She says that there
will be pain for Jonas, but his job is very important for all. Jonas feels confused, proud,
but fearful for his future.

Chapter 9
The crowd left the auditorium and Jonas rode back with his friend Asher. During
dinner Jonas asks his parents about the failed receiver, to which they reluctantly answer
that she couldnt be spoken off and she can't be named. Jonas opens the folder he had
been given at the ceremony to prepare for his job. In the folder Jonas finds a couple of
instructions on where to go after school, and a couple of privileges and rules such as
being able to ask questions, lie, and not being able to talk about his dreams with
anyone. He is curuoius to know if others have the same privileges and rules as him.

Chapter 10
Jonas rides with Fiona to the House of the Old, where she enters for her training
and Jonas goes to meet with the receiver. Jonas feels uncomfortable when the desk
lady calls him by the Receiver of Memory and opens the door for him. He sees the old
man (old receiver) in the room and tells him how old he looks (which he takes as a
compliment), but he answers that the job makes him look older than what he really is.
The old man tells Jonas to ask as many questions as he wants to gain the most
knowledge he can.
