CLC 12 - Final Capstone Proposal and Reflection

Name: Duvan Mercado

Topic: Drawing and writing a comic book
Focus Area: Product creation
Inquiry Question: How can I turn a short story into a comic book?
Presentation Method: Slide Show
Presentation Time & Date: June 13, 11:25 AM

1) Capstone Project Summary:

In the box below, please type out a 200 – 300-word summary highlighting the key points and
information that you plan to present during your Capstone Project presentation.

In my presentation, I will have a brief introduction explaining my likes and other small facts. I will then talk
about why I chose to write and draw a comic book. I will explain the several plans I made and how they
changed over time. I will explain the short story, giving reasons for the genre and theme. I will go over
what I learned - drawing eyes, faces, first-point perspective, second-point perspective, and third point
perspective - what I would have done differently – working on it more often, what I would have learnt first
- what I had hoped to accomplish, and what I wish I could have learned. This will include the challenges,
successes and failures of the project, and what I felt and regret.

2) Core Competencies:
In the boxes below, explain how your project or the work we’ve done in CLC 12 Class demonstrates
your abilities and skills from each section of the Core Competencies. (You must choose at least two
points from each skill area of the core competencies.) *This was also done in your Capstone Draft
Proposal, so if the skills and abilities still apply and have not changed, then you can copy and paste
your answers in the Final Capstone Proposal*

Core Competency: How you demonstrate it in Capstone Project:

Personal Awareness & When writing the manuscript and learning to draw, I can reach out to my
Responsibility peers and teachers to give feedback.

I will set goals and deadlines to help plan and time manage the capstone
project.
Social Responsibility By reaching out to peers, teachers, and classmates for help, I can build
relationships and rapport.

I can reach out to several people read the manuscripts and review my
drawings and learn from their feedback and experiences
Critical Thinking By considering the targeted audience, I can determine the purpose and
message of the book.

When tackling a problem, I can reassess, troubleshoot, and find an

alternative route or procedure by learning what went wrong and why.
Creative Thinking By considering my targeted audience, I can consider the perspective of
certain topics, genres, and themes of a book.
I can look to other artists for inspiration, personal events to influence the
plot, and culture to help shape the characters.
Communication I can receive feedback on how to improve the drawings and story by
asking from others.

Reflecting on my current and past work, I will be able to determine what

works and what doesn’t, and what I like and don’t like.
Personal & Cultural Identity The book will reflect what I value and believe, and/or my culture.

My strengths include planning and organizing, which will help me stay on

track.

3) Presentation preparation:
In the boxes below, answer the following questions: What will you require from your teacher, what will
you need to bring and what still needs to be completed between now and your Capstone presentation
day?
a) What will you require from your teacher in order to do your Capstone presentation? (Ex: Laptop,
table, poster paper, projector, etc…)

A laptop and the T.V.

b) What will you need to bring in order to do your Capstone presentation?

I will bring my sketchbook to show what I have done.

c) What still needs to be completed between now and your Capstone presentation day?

Updating my website (adding the links and adding more evidence), adding more to my sketchbook, and
drawing and coloring the cover page of the comic book.

4) References and explanation of sources:

Please paste all your current list of sources along with a brief explanation of what you used them for in
your research. All these sources should also be listed on your website on your References page.

Final Capstone Project Reflection Questions

(Please give specific detailed answers.)
1. In the process of completing your Capstone Project, what did you learn about your subject? What did
you learn about your skill set? What did you learn about yourself?
I learned that drawing has complex theory, much like chemistry and physics, far beyond what I was expecting.
If I had to compare it to something, it would be like an elementary student taking a physics 12 course. The
basics itself did not feel basic. I was thinking drawing would be somewhat relaxing. It was not. Drawing for
even 30 minutes felt like I had taken several exams back-to-back. Although that could be I’m not particularly
artistically inclined. Drawing made me realize there is more than just school, and I feel as though my skill set is
quite limited. I have learned that I am good at making plans, but the execution needs work.
2. How is your project relevant to you? How is it relevant to the school? How is it relevant to the
community?
One of my goals is writing and drawing a graphic novel, and maybe have it published. Although, it has almost
no relevance to the school and community since I am doing this for my own personal gain. The comic book
would have been for my friend, had I finished it, but since I won’t, it’s just for me to learn how to draw.
3. What impact did your Capstone have on you?
It was humbling. I hadn’t felt the struggle, discouragement, and frustration from learning something new in a
while since in my other subjects, especially sciences and math, I picked up on things right away.
4. What aspects of your project are you most proud of?
Nothing in particular. I’m still in the first few steps to becoming decent at drawing, and there is still a lot of
basics I am yet to master.
5. What was a difficulty you encountered while researching your Capstone project? How were you able to
overcome those obstacles?
The frustration and embarrassment of my not-so-good drawings were the major obstacles. I was frustrated I
didn’t do what I wanted to and that I felt like the project was going nowhere. I was never able to overcome
these obstacles, and I ended up not logging a lot of my work and taking frequent breaks. There were other
personal and familial issues, but I feel as though that even with those issues, more could have been done.
6. What is the one thing you would have changed about your project if you could?
I would have started drawing right away, rather than starting the short story first.
7. What advice would you offer to future Capstone students to help them with their Capstone journey?
Do something new to you (as much as possible). Building existing skills is nice and beneficial, especially if it
contributes to future goals. However, especially for people like me – people who haven’t really pushed
themselves far enough – will benefit from all the frustrations and discomfort of the unknown. So, risk it all.
There’s nothing to lose.
