Module 1: Coffee Nursery Establishment and Management

Main ideas and concepts discussed

Lesson 1: The Coffee Plant
• Coffee belongs to the Rubiaceae family. It has four known varieties namely Robusta,
Excelsa, Arabica and Liberica.
• Robusta, commonly known as “kapeng manipis” is the main ingredient in the
production of instant coffee.
• Arabica variety known as “kapeng tagalog” can be grown in areas of high elevation of
more than 900 -1,800 meters above sea level.

Lesson 2: Physical Characteristics and Cultivation Requirements of Coffee Robusta

• Growing Robusta variety requires an elevation ranging from 600 – 1,200 meters
above sea level. It needs a temperature between 13 – 26 °C
• In a one-hectare plantation, you can yield approximately 1,200 kilograms or more of
clean dry coffee beans.

Lesson 3: Classification of Coffee Nurseries

• A nursery is the place or establishment for raising or handling young seedlings until
they are ready for permanent planting.
• Demonstrating best nursery practices is securing high produce of quality seedlings in
sufficient quantities available during the prescribed planting season.
• Temporary nursery commonly as subsidiary, satellite or small nursery is capable of
producing limited number of seedlings for a particular plantation area and is usually
abandoned after its use.
• Research nursery is usually small but with permanent structure and sometimes
comes with sophisticated equipment for research.
▪ Commercial nursery is a small nursery with temporary structures.

Lesson 4: Nursery Site Selection and Construction

▪ When constructing a nursery, the site must be close to future plantation, close to an
adequate water source, free from stray animals and accessible to transportation
▪ The required dimensions for constructing a nursery for a hectare coffee plantation
are 6m x 12m with 3m distance between posts.
▪ It is recommended to use pure river sand, vermicompost and sub-soil for your rooting
media.
