ORDO

for the celebration of Mass and the Divine Office

in the English Province of the Order of Preachers
Advent 2021 — Advent 2022

Sunday Readings: Cycle C

Weekday Readings: Year II

Using this Ordo

This Ordo presents the liturgical calendars which apply to the English Province
of the Order of Preachers on a day-by-day basis from the beginning of Advent
2021 until the end of the calendar year 2022. Principally it follows the Gen-
eral Roman Calendar and applicable national calendars found in the 2011 English
translation of Roman Missal, as updated. It also incorporates the liturgical calen-
dar of the Order of Preachers published in 2019,1 as well as the various diocesan
calendars as they have been made available to the editor.
At the beginning of each liturgical season, some notes are given on the character
of the season, general norms for liturgical celebrations in the season, and prayer
intentions drawn from the Cycle of Prayer issued by the Bishops’ Conference of
1 Analecta OP 127 (2019), 17-22; 35-39

1
England and Wales. At the top of each two-page spread are given the liturgical
season and the month in course.
On each day of the year, the first and principal celebration listed is the one
which applies to the majority of priories and friars of the Province. The litur-
gical colour for that celebration is shown to the left of the main entry; a small
Dominican shield in the same position indicates that proper texts for the cel-
ebration are to be found in the Dominican Proper. Where a new week of the
psalter in the Liturgy of the Hours is begun, that is shown with the letters “PW”
to the right of the main entry. Sundays, solemnities, feasts and certain other cel-
ebrations have notes about the way the Mass and Divine Office are arranged on
that day; these should be read in conjunction with the general norms for these
matters given on page 3.
There follows a list of the optional celebrations (optional memorials or com-
memorations) which can be chosen either anywhere in the Province, or in the
places noted. Then any obligatory celebrations applicable either just to a single
priory or at most to a minority of the priories or friars of the Province are listed,
together with their rank. The liturgical colour appropriate to these celebrations
is given in square brackets: G, V, R or W for green, violet, red or white respec-
tively. Finally any celebrations that are inscribed in the various calendars but
which are omitted this year are given. Where applicable, other relevant notes
are given, such as Holy Days of Obligation or Days of Penance.
The editor takes responsibility for any errors or omissions that might be present
in this Ordo, and respectfully asks that, should any be found, he be notified of
them by e-mail to ordo@english.op.org.

General norms for the arrangement of the liturgy
Apart from the Sundays and weekdays of the year, liturgical celebrations are
ranked as solemnities, feasts, memorials and optional memorials. The following
is a general guide to the arrangement of the Mass or Liturgy of the Hours on
these various days; occasionally the liturgical books may make special provision
for a particular celebration, and those specific directions take precedence over
these general norms.

Arrangement of the Mass2

On Sundays and solemnities the Collect, Prayer over the Offerings and Prayer
after Communion are taken either from the proper texts provided for the cel-
ebration, or, where no proper text is provided, from the appropriate common.
Proper readings are usually provided; where these are lacking, they are chosen
from the appropriate common. There are three readings, including the Gospel.
The Gloria and the Credo are said except where noted; in particular the Gloria
is omitted on Sundays of Advent or Lent. If a proper preface is given, it is
used; otherwise the preface is from the appropriate common (on solemnities)
or season (on Sundays). Eucharistic Prayer I (the Roman Canon) is especially
recommended for Sundays, days on which a proper Communicantes or Hanc Ig-
itur is assigned, and the solemnities of the saints mentioned in the Prayer itself;
Eucharistic Prayer III is likewise preferred on Sundays and festive days. On
Sundays of Ordinary Time, Eucharistic Prayer IV may be used with its invari-
able preface.
For the pastoral reasons, on a Sunday of Ordinary time it is possible to ob-
serve a Feast of the Lord or Solemnity which falls during the week, using the
mass of that Feast or Solemnity at Sunday Masses at which the people are
present.3
Mass on feasts is arranged as on solemnities, except that the Credo is not said,
and there are usually only two readings including the Gospel. Eucharistic Prayer
I (the Roman Canon) is especially recommended for the feasts of the apostles
and the other saints mentioned in the Prayer itself. Eucharistic Prayer III is also
appropriately used on festive days.
On memorials, whether obligatory or optional, the Collect is taken from the
proper text, or, if this is lacking, from the appropriate common. The Prayer over
the Offerings and Prayer after Communion are taken from the proper text if pro-
vided; if there is no proper text, they may be taken either from the appropriate
2 cf. General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 352–385
3 cf. Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, 58

3
common or from the weekday of the current season. Unless proper readings are
specified, the readings are normally of the occurring weekday; nevertheless the
lectionary often gives readings that are not strictly proper but which could be
used on a particular memorial if a pastoral reason truly suggests it. Eucharistic
Prayer I is especially recommended for the memorials of the saints mentioned
in the Prayer itself.

Where a memorial is impeded by a weekday of Advent (from 17 December), of

the Christmas Octave, or of Lent (other than Ash Wednesday or during Holy
Week), a commemoration of the saint may be made. The Collect may be taken
from the memorial, but everything else is for the current weekday.

Weekdays have their own proper Collect, Prayer over the Offerings and Prayer
after Communion during Advent, Christmastide, Lent and Eastertide. During
Ordinary Time these prayers are usually taken from the preceding Sunday, but
may be taken from another Sunday of Ordinary Time or from the Prayers for
Various Needs provided in the Missal. Readings are provided for each week-
day, but these may be rearranged over the course of a week to take account of
interruption of the cycle by some solemnity or feast. The preface is usually ei-
ther of the season or one of the Common Prefaces. Eucharistic Prayer II is more
appropriately used on weekdays.

Votive Masses and Masses for Various Needs and Occasions given in the Ro-
man Missal may be celebrated on weekdays of Ordinary Time. In case of real
necessity or pastoral advantage, they can also be celebrated on weekdays of Ad-
vent up to 16 December, of Christmas Time from 2 January, of Easter Time after
the Octave, or in place of an obligatory memorial. Otherwise such Masses are
forbidden, except that on Sundays of Christmas Time or Ordinary Time, feasts,
and weekdays of Lent other than Ash Wednesday or Holy Week, the Diocesan
Bishop may allow or even direct their celebration.

Funeral Masses may be celebrated any day except Holy Days of Obligation,
Thursday of Holy Week, the Paschal Triduum and Sundays of Advent, Lent and
Easter. A Mass for the Dead on receiving the news of a death, on the occasion of
final burial, or the first anniversary of death, may be held on weekdays within
the Octave of Christmas, on days when an obligatory memorial occurs, and on
weekdays other than Ash Wednesday or the weekdays of Holy Week. On other
occasions a Mass for the Dead may only be celebrated on weekdays of Ordinary
Time when no obligatory memorial occurs, and the Mass must be applied for
the dead.

4
Arrangement of the Liturgy of the Hours4
The celebration of a solemnity begins with First Vespers the previous evening,
unless the preceding day takes precedence. The whole of First Vespers, the
Office of Readings, Lauds, Midday Prayer and Second Vespers are from the
proper, or from the common where the proper is lacking. Compline is as for
Sunday after First and Second Vespers respectively, except where special pro-
vision is made in the Dominican Proper. The psalms at Lauds are of Sunday I
of the psalter; at Midday Prayer the psalms are from Sunday I of the psalter on
Sundays, and the complementary psalms on other days. The Te Deum is said at
the Office of Readings.
Feasts do not have First Vespers unless they are feasts of the Lord occurring
on Sundays. The Office of Readings, Lauds and Vespers are celebrated as on a
solemnity. At Midday Prayer, the reading, versicle and concluding prayer are
from the proper (or common if lacking); everything else is from the occurring
weekday, unless other provision is made. Compline is celebrated as on a week-
day, except where special provision is made in the Dominican Proper.
On memorials, if anything is specified as proper to the memorial it is always
used. If no other provision is made, at the Office of Readings, Lauds and Vespers
the invitatory, hymn, readings, Benedictus and Magnificat antiphons are taken
either from the common or from the occurring weekday; the Collect is normally
proper, but otherwise is taken from the common. With a few rare exceptions, the
psalmody at all offices is of the occurring weekday. At the Office of Readings,
the biblical reading and responsory are taken from the occurring weekday; if
there is no proper second reading provided, the second reading and responsory
are also taken from the weekday. The Te Deum is not said. Midday Prayer and
Compline are of the occurring weekday.
Commemorations may be made of memorials that fall on weekdays of Advent
from 17 December, of the Christmas Octave and of Lent, excluding Ash Wednes-
day and Holy Week. At the Office of Readings, the hagiographical reading and
responsory of the memorial may be added after the second reading and respon-
sory of the occurring weekday, and the office concludes with the Collect for
the saint. At Lauds and Vespers, after the Collect of the occurring weekday,
the proper or common Benedictus or Magnificat antiphon and Collect may be
added.

4 cf. General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours, 204–240

5
ADVENT
“Advent has a twofold character, for it is a time of preparation for
the Solemnities of Christmas, in which the First Coming of the Son
of God to humanity is remembered, and likewise a time when, by
remembrance of this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to
Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. For these two reasons,
Advent is a period of devout and expectant delight.”5
The Gloria is omitted on Sundays of Advent.6
A Homily is especially recommended on the weekdays of Advent.7
“During Advent the floral decoration of the altar should be marked
by a moderation suited to the character of this time of year, without
expressing in anticipation the full joy of the Nativity of the Lord.”8
“In Advent the organ and other musical instruments should be used
with a moderation that is consistent with the season’s character and
does not anticipate the full joy of the Nativity of the Lord.”9
Sunday readings at Mass are those provided for Year C (St Luke).
During Advent and Christmastide we are asked to pray for migrants
and refugees; and expectant mothers.

LENT

“Lent is ordered to preparing for the celebration of Easter, since the

Lenten liturgy prepares for celebration of the Paschal Mystery both
catechumens, by the various stages of Christian Initiation, and the
faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do penance.”13

The Gloria and Te Deum are omitted on Sundays in Lent.14 During

Lent, the Alleluia is replaced with another verse, psalm or tract.15 A
Homily is especially recommended on weekdays of Lent.16

During Lent, floral decoration of the altar is forbidden, and the play-
ing of the organ and musical instruments is allowed only to sup-
port the singing. Exceptions to both these rules are Lætare Sunday
(Fourth Sunday of Lent), Solemnities and Feasts.17

Every day of Lent is a day of penance,18 on which “Christ’s faithful

are in a special manner to devote themselves to prayer, to engage
in works of piety and charity, and to deny themselves, by fulfilling
their obligations more faithfully”.19

During Lent we are asked to pray for candidates for the sacraments;
women; the needy and hungry of the world; and penitents and wan-
derers.

Violet All Masses without the people are forbidden. Ordinarily no Mass
takes place during the day except for the Chrism Mass. The local
Ordinary may, in case of genuine necessity, allow a Mass to be
celebrated in churches and oratories in the morning, but only for the
faithful who are in no way able to participate in the evening Mass.
Holy Communion may not be distributed to the faithful outside
Mass, except in the case of those who are sick.

THE SACRED PASCHAL TRIDUUM

“Since Christ accomplished his work of human redemption and of

the perfect glorification of God principally through his Paschal Mys-
tery, in which by dying he has destroyed our death, and by rising
restored our life, the sacred Paschal Triduum of the Passion and Res-
urrection of the Lord shines forth as the high point of the entire litur-
gical year. Therefore the pre-eminence that Sunday has in the week,
the Solemnity of Easter has in the liturgical year.”22

14 Thu THURSDAY OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

White (MAUNDY THURSDAY)
E VENING M ASS OF THE L ORD ’ S S UPPER : bells at Gloria,
washing of feet at choice, procession with gifts for the poor at choice,
preface of the Most Holy Eucharist I, special form of Roman Canon,
transfer of the Most Blessed Sacrament after Holy Communion.
Readings: Ex 12:1–8.11-14; cf. Ps 115; 1 Cor 11:23-26; Jn 13:1–15.
“The altar may be decorated with flowers with a moderation that
accords with the character of the day. The tabernacle should be
entirely empty; but a sufficient quantity of bread should be
consecrated in this Mass for the Communion of the clergy and the
people on this and the following day.”23
Bells are rung during the Gloria, and when it is finished, they
remain silent until the Gloria of the Easter Vigil. During this same
period, the organ and other musical instruments may be used only
so as to support the singing.24
After the transfer of the Most Blessed Sacrament, at an appropriate
time, the altar is stripped and, if possible, the crosses are removed
from the church. Those which remain should be veiled.25
The faithful are invited to continue adoration for a suitable length of
time. After midnight, the adoration should take place without
solemnity.26
V ESPERS is not celebrated by those who have attended the Mass of
the Lord’s Supper; C OMPLINE is as after Second Vespers of Sunday,
except that the blessing is not given and the anthem to the Blessed
Virgin is not sung.27

Readings: Is 52:13–53:12; cf. Ps 30; Heb 4:14–16, 5:7–9;
Jn 18:1–19:42.
The Celebration of Passion of the Lord should take place at about
three o’clock, unless a later hour is chosen for a pastoral reason. The
altar should be completely bare: without cross, candles or cloths.28
On this and the following day, by a most ancient tradition, the
Church does not celebrate the Sacraments at all, except for Penance
and the Anointing of the Sick. Holy Communion is distributed to
the faithful only within the celebration of the Lord’s Passion; but it
may be brought at any hour of the day to the sick who cannot
participate in this celebration.29
O FFICE : of the day; O FFICE OF R EADINGS and L AUDS may be

16 Sat HOLY SATURDAY

“On Holy Saturday the Church waits at the Lord’s tomb in prayer
and fasting, meditating on his Passion and Death and on his
Descent into Hell, and awaiting his Resurrection.
“The Church abstains from the Sacrifice of the Mass, with the sacred
table left bare, until after the solemn Vigil, that is the anticipation by
night of the Resurrection, when the time comes for paschal joys, the
abundance of which overflows to occupy fifty days.

Word, bells at Gloria, solemn Alleluia and Alleluia psalm,
baptismal liturgy, preface of Easter I, proper Communicantes and
Hanc Igitur, double Alleluia dismissal.
Readings (at the Vigil): as prescribed in the Lectionary, with their
responsorial psalms or canticles. Where more serious pastoral
circumstances demand it, the number of readings may be reduced,
but at least three readings should be read, both from the Law and
from the Prophets, and their psalms or canticle sung. The reading
from Exodus with its canticle may never be omitted.
Readings (at the Mass): Rom 6:3–11; cf. Ps 117; Lk 24:1–12.
“By most ancient tradition, this is the night of keeping vigil for the
Lord, in which, following the Gospel admonition, the faithful,
carrying lighted lamps in their hands, should be like those looking
for the Lord when he returns, so that at his coming he may find them
awake and have them sit at his table.
“Of this night’s Vigil, which is the greatest and most noble of all
solemnities, there is to be only one celebration in each church... The
entire celebration of the Easter Vigil must take place during the
night, so that it begins after nightfall and ends before daybreak on
the Sunday.”31 In London, Civil Twilight ends at 8:34pm, and
begins again at 5:26am.
O FFICE OF R EADINGS and C OMPLINE are not celebrated by those
who have attended the Easter Vigil.
The Paschal Candle remains in the sanctuary throughout Eastertide,
and is lit at all the more solemn liturgical celebrations of this period.
By custom, cappas are set aside at the Gloria of the Easter Vigil.

31 Roman Missal, p. 377

32
EASTERTIDE
“The fifty days from the Sunday of the Resurrection to Pentecost
Sunday are celebrated in joy and exultation as one feast day, indeed
as one ‘great Sunday’. These are the days above all others in which
the Alleluia is sung.”32
During Eastertide we are asked to pray for new members of the
Church; vocations; the right use of the media; the Church; and hu-
man work.
