of Reptiles
UOI Grade 2
About Reptiles
• Reptiles are vertebrate animals
that drag themselves close to
the ground.
• Most Reptiles lay eggs.
• The skin of Reptiles is covered
with scales and sometimes
shells.
• Reptiles are cold-blooded.
• Reptiles breathe with the help of
lungs.
What is a life cycle?

• A life cycle is a series of stages

a living thing goes through
during its life.
• All animals go through life
cycles.
• It is helpful to use diagrams to
show the stages, which often
include starting as an egg then
growing up.
• Life cycles repeat again and
again.
Lifecycle of a reptile
Stage 1: Egg (8-10
weeks)
• Reptiles begin their lives as eggs.
• The eggs are buried or placed in a
hole underground.
• A clutch may range from a single
egg to more than 100.
• In most cases, the female reptile
leaves the eggs to hatch alone.
• Some reptiles, such as pythons and
crocodilians, will care for and protect
the eggs until they hatch.
• Some reptiles, such as garter
snakes, give birth to live young.
Stage 2: Hatchling (7-
10 days)
• When a reptile is ready to hatch, the
creature uses an egg tooth to break
through the shell of the egg.
• Once the shell is opened, the hatchling
will typically remain in the shell for 12
to 48 hours.
• The little reptile can care for and
defend itself from birth.
Stage 3: Juvenile

• Juvenile reptiles look similar

to the adults of their
species.
• Reptiles grow slowly until
they reach adult size and
maturity.
• The time a reptile spends as
a juvenile varies by species.
Stage 4: Adult
• The time a reptile spends in
adulthood varies greatly.
• Mostly reptiles live much longer.
• Alligators have life spans of 35 to 50
years.
• Desert tortoises can live 80 years or
more.
• Some reptiles have short life spans.
For example, corn snakes may only
live 6 to 8 years in the wild.
• The green iguana reaches adulthood
when it is approximately 16 months
old and 9 inches long.
