Today, I’m going to talk about the following question: To what

extent do relationships influence the construction of individual

identity and personal development? This is part of the theme
Expressing and building yourself in the curriculum. So first, I will
reflect on the relationship between parents and kids can be the
construction of individual identity and self-development. Then I will
address the issue of how friendship and romantic relationship can
help us in our personal development and construct our individual
identity.

Firstly, I’m gonna show you how it exists different way of

‘difference’. I’ll present it to you with three different things. For the
first one, I will talk to you about Rupi Kaur’s poem about her mom, an
instapoem, is a type of poetry created to be shared on social media,
which has become very popular in recent years. These types of
poems are very short and use simple and direct language to express
complex ideas about human connection. The poem highlights the
mother's sacrifice as a nurturing act that allows the child to pursue
their own dreams. This selflessness can leave a lasting impact on the
child, instilling values such as compassion, gratitude, and the
importance of caring for others. They child may feel pressure to
achieve their dreams in honor of their mother's sacrifice, potentially
affecting their self-esteem and development. The mother's sacrifice
serves as an inspirational model for the child, demonstrating
resilience, strength, and the ability to put others first. This example
can guide the child's behavior and relationships with others. The
Instapoem from Rupi Kaur captures the profound impact of
relationships, particularly the relationship between a mother and
child, on the construction of individual identity and personal
development. The poem underscores how a mother's sacrifices can
empower the child to pursue their own dreams while also shaping
their values and sense of self.
For the second one, I will talk to you about the movie "Mrs.
Doubtfire" directed by Chris Columbus. The film follows the story of
Daniel Hillard, a loving but eccentric father who goes through a
divorce and loses custody of his three children. Desperate to spend
more time with his kids, Daniel disguises himself as an elderly Scottish
nanny named Mrs. Doubtfire and secures a job working for his ex-wife
Miranda. As Mrs. Doubtfire, Daniel gains a deeper understanding of
his ex-wife Miranda's perspective and the struggles she faces. This
empathy helps him see the situation from her point of view and work
toward a more amicable co-parenting arrangement. These
experiences contribute to his personal development by teaching him
adaptability and resilience. Daniel's desire to spend time with his
children motivates him to prioritize his family over his personal
aspirations. This shift in priorities influences his identity as a parent.
This resolution allows him to heal and move forward with a clearer
sense of his identity and role as a father. Mrs. Doubtfire illustrates
how relationships, particularly within a family, can significantly
influence the construction of individual identity and personal
development and how the parent’s love can push people to change.
For the third one, I will use the song "Slipping Through My
Fingers" from the musical Mamma Mia! (originally by ABBA). The
scene captures the mother's experience of watching her daughter
grow up and move through different stages of life. The mother
experiences a sense of loss as her daughter grows up and becomes
more independent. This feeling of her daughter "slipping through her
fingers" prompts the mother to reflect on her identity as a parent and
the changes in her role for her daughter. The mother expresses regret
about not fully understanding her daughter's inner world and missing
out on potential experiences they could have shared. This
introspection can lead to emotional growth and self-awareness as she
considers how she could have been more present. The scene conveys
the mother's desire to capture every moment with her daughter and
her longing to preserve their connection. As her daughter becomes
more independent, the mother faces the challenge of letting go and
allowing her daughter to grow. This process can be difficult but can
also lead to personal growth as she learns to navigate this new phase
of their relationship. The scene demonstrates how relationships,
particularly between a parent and child, play a crucial role in shaping
individual identity and personal development. The emotional
complexities of watching a child grow up and the challenges of
navigating changing roles contribute to the personal growth of both
the mother and the daughter.

With this in mind, I will show you how romantic relationships

can participate to the the construction of individual identity and
personal development

Secondly, I will explain you: how romantic relationships can

participate to the the construction of individual identity and personal
development? I’ll present it to you with three different documents,
the first, I will use the musical film La la land written and directed by
Damien Chazelle. During the movie we follow the love story of
Sebastian and Mia. Sebastian is a jazz musician with dreams of
opening his own jazz club, while Mia is an aspiring actress trying to
make it in Hollywood. The film tells the story of their love affair as
they navigate the challenges of pursuing their passions in the
entertainment industry. This scene from “La La Land” illustrates how
relationships can significantly influence the construction of individual
identity and personal development. In the scene, Sebastian tries to
encourage Mia to continue pursuing her acting dreams by telling her
about an audition opportunity. Mia, on the other hand, is hesitant
and reluctant to audition because of her past negative experiences
and fear of failure. This interaction reveals the impact of their
relationship on each other's identities and development. Sebastian's
support and belief in Mia's talent challenge her doubts and fears. His
encouragement serves as a source of motivation for Mia to continue
pursuing her dream, despite her reservations. Mia's hesitation and
decision to give up on acting reflect her struggle with self-doubt and
fear of rejection. Sebastian's forces her to confront these doubts,
potentially leading her to reassess her goals and dreams. Sebastian's
unwavering belief in Mia's abilities contrasts with her own lack of
confidence. This dynamic creates a tension between the two that
forces Mia to question her own self-perception and what she truly
wants. Sebastian's role in the scene demonstrates how relationships
can impact his identity as well. His dedication to supporting Mia
reflects his role as a partner and his desire to see her succeed. His
insistence on her pursuing the audition highlights how deeply he
cares about her and her dreams. Overall, the scene emphasizes the
complexity of relationships and their profound impact on personal
identity and development.
For the second one, I will talk to you about the argument scene
between Charlie and Nicole in Marriage Story is one of the most
emotionally charged moments in the film. The argument allows
Charlie and Nicole to express their frustrations and grievances that
have been building up throughout their relationship and divorce
process. This emotional release is an important part of processing
their feelings and moving toward healing. During the argument, both
Charlie and Nicole articulate their desires, disappointments, and
perspectives on the marriage. This confrontation reveals how their
relationship has shaped their individual identities and the ways in
which they view themselves in relation to each other. The scene
highlights the clashing expectations and priorities that contributed to
the breakdown of their marriage. Nicole's desire for independence
and a career, as well as Charlie's focus on his own ambitions,
represent the personal growth and shifts in identity that occur in
relationships. Both Charlie and Nicole confront each other about their
perceived faults and failings in the marriage. This mutual
acknowledgment can lead to greater self-awareness and the
opportunity to learn from their mistakes, ultimately contributing to
their personal development. The argument underscores the
importance of effective communication and compromise in
relationships. While the scene is intense and confrontational, it serves
as a catalyst for both characters to better understand each other's
perspectives and work toward resolving their issues. The argument
scene allows Charlie and Nicole to express their anger and pain,
which can help them let go of past resentments. This release of
negative emotions can pave the way for them to move forward with a
clearer sense of their own identities and what they want for the
future. The argument scene can shape how Charlie and Nicole
approach future relationships, both with each other as co-parents
and with new partners. The lessons they learn from this
confrontation can guide their future interactions and decisions. In
conclusion, the argument demonstrates how relationships,
particularly the dissolution of a marriage, can significantly influence
individual identity and personal development.
Finally, I will analyze William Shakespeare's play Much Ado
About Nothing. We follow the relationship between Beatrice and
Benedick provides a good example of how relationships can influence
the construction of individual identity and personal development.
Their witty banter and initial antagonism evolve into a mutual respect
and love that challenge and shape both characters. Here is an extract
from Act 4, Scene 1, which highlights how their relationship
influences their personal development. In this passage, Beatrice
expresses her frustration and impatience with Benedick, who
eventually challenges him to stand up for justice and defend Hero.
This confrontation represents a pivotal moment in Benedick's
character development, as he decides to act on Beatrice's challenge
and stands up for Hero, even if it puts him in conflict with his friends.
Through their interactions, Beatrice and Benedick help each other
grow as individuals and challenge each other's perspectives,
ultimately leading to personal development and a transformation in
their relationship from adversaries to lovers. This excerpt
demonstrates how relationships can influence an individual's identity
and personal growth.
