demonstrate understanding of the central
message of the story.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students will be able to retell important parts of the story using a podcast.
Students will learn how to help their peers in using the tools to record a podcast.
Selected Instructional Software Tool:
Spotify of Podcasters
Description of Software:
This tool allows creators to make podcasts for audiences to listen to. You can create various genres
of podcasts and record just by clicking on a record button. The tool allows you to edit your podcast
recording and include royalty free music or other music from outside sources. When you finish with
your podcast, you can include titles, descriptions, and add pictures to introduce the type of podcast
to listeners. The tool allows you to make any changes and choose an audience to listen to the
podcast. Also, listeners that have the app can listen to the podcast in any device or place.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
I will first start the lesson by bringing my students together to discuss in class a tool that they will be
using, which is Spotify for Podcasters. I will be introducing that tool on a smartboard where students
will look at and follow along. After showing them how the tool works, I will introduce a series of
books to the students about Max and Ruby. I will read one book to them as an example using the
Spotify for Podcasters tool that shows them how it looks and sounds. Then, I will ask them questions
of what they learned about the reading as well as their noticing of the podcast. So, I want them to be
aware of their goals by telling them to choose a peer for collaboration and a book that they will use
together for the podcast. Once they chose a book, they will read together with me to make sure that
they have an understanding as well as be assisted for any words that may have difficulty. When they
finish reading, I will ask them questions about the story, and they should be able to retell important
details from the story. Once they have the key details, they will work together with their device to
record their podcast. I will help them get to the tool and let them record. The students will utilize
this tool to express their thoughts about the story as well as great details that represent the story’s
meaning. They will not be setting up an account, but they will have access to the podcast provided
by me to record. I will have small group sessions where I will work individually with the students. I
will be working with them to make this podcast since they are learning the tool for the first time. I
will provide them with feedback by involving a small group individually and telling them what went
well and what needs to be improved. I will show them how they can fix their podcast if they have
something missing or if it has some issues. After they do the podcast, I will be clouding my lesson by
letting the students join and discuss with each other what they like about the topic and tool and
what was the most challenging part of it. I will call them back to share with me what they have
discussed with their partner.
Managing student learning: I think that the tool that I used for this lesson will cause a shift in the
behavior of students by allowing students to experience a challenging, but fun learning activity. They
will be working together to find solutions and be able to make a final product that shows their
understanding of the books they have read. I will allow for time-on-task and shift from passive to
active learning by setting a time limit for the students to be aware of the time that they must read
and create a podcast. They will have 50 minutes to be able to work on this project. They will also
have another day if they need more time to work and get assistance. I will have students have a
small script that will help them with what they are going to say in the podcast. The podcast should
be 2 minutes or less, so they should be able to only think about important details from the book and
what they think. The last one would Ask 3 then Me strategy, which students are allowed to ask not
only their partner, but other groups for help if they need it.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
Spotify for Podcasters supports all students with visual and mental impairments. It also supports
English language learners and with disabilities. The activity and tools that I selected for the students
support and enhance their learning experience by allowing them to choose a book that they would

like to read and learn about. Then, they will be doing a podcast that will allow them to use their
thinking skills and face challenges. The goal for them is to work together to find a solution to make a
great podcast. One of the principles of UDL that connects with this lesson would be the Multiple
Means of Engagement because students are not only interacting with the activity itself, but with all
their peers when they need help in developing a podcast.
Reflection: I think that the activities that I created will impact student learning in the classroom. I
feel confident that the students will enjoy this activity since they get to choose a book to read and
create a podcast about what they have read. There are a lot of students that would like to
experience new activities and challenges, so I think this task would be great to implement into the
lesson. The part that I’m most excited about is showing them how to use the tool and seeing them
participate because I want to see their strengths and weaknesses when they do an activity involving
technology. This will help me think about ways that I can help my students learn. I also think that
students will find joy in doing something creative and meaningful.
