5. READING COMPREHENSION:
Reading 1:
Read the following passage and choose the best answer for each of the questions below:
Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places, it is actually considered unusual not to use one.
In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people. They find that the phones are more than a means of
communication - having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected.
The explosion in mobile phones use around the world has made some health professionals worried. Some
doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. In
England, there has been a serious debate about this issue. Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative
publicity. They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for your health. On the other hand, medical
studies have shown changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile phones. Signs of change in the tissues of
brain and head can be delected with modern scanning equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire al
young age because of serious memory loss. He couldn’t remember even simple tasks. He would often forget the name
of his own son. This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, everyday of his working week, for
a couple of years. His family doctor blamed his mobile phone use, but his employer’s doctor didn’t agree. What is it
that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is mobile phone radiation. High-tech machines can detect
very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation, but
they say the amount is too small to worry about. As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it’s best
to use mobile phones less often. Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long lime. Use your mobile phone
only when you really need it. Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient, especially in emergencies. In the
future, mobile phones may have a warning label that says they arc bad for your health. So for now, it’s wise not to use
your mobile phone too often.

3. The word “means” in the passage most closely means……………
a. meanings b. expression c. method d. transmission

c. “The Way Mobile Phones Work” d. “Mobile Phones: A Must of Our Time”
Reading 2:
Read the following passage and choose the best answer for each of the questions below:
Recent technological advances in manned and unmanned vehicles, along with breakthroughs in satellite
technology and computer equipment, have overcome some of the limitations of divers and diving equipment for
scientists doing research on the great oceans of the world. Without a vehicle, divers often became sluggish, and their
mental concentration was severely limited. Because undersea pressure affects their speech organs, communication
among divers has always been difficult or impossible. But today, most oceanographers avoid the use of vulnerable
human divers, preferring to reduce the risk to human life and make direct observations by means of instruments that
arc lowered into the ocean, from samples taken from the water, or from photographs made by orbiting satellites.
Directs observations of the ocean floor can be made not only by divers but also by deep-diving submarines in the water
and even by the technology of sophisticated aerial photography from vantage points above the surface of more than
seven miles and cruise at depths of fifteen thousand feet. In addition, radio-equipped buoys can be operated by remote
control in order to transmit information back to land-based laboratories via satellite. Particularly important for ocean
study are data about the water temperature, currents, and weather. Satellite photographs can show the distribution of
sea ice, oil slicks, and cloud formations over the ocean. Maps created from satellite pictures can represent the
temperature and the color of the ocean’s surface, enabling researchers to study the ocean currents from laboratories on
dry land. Furthermore, computers help oceanographers to collect, organize, and analyze data from submarines and
satellites. By creating a model of the ocean’s movement and characteristics, scientists can predict the patterns and
possible effects of the ocean on the environment.
Recently, many oceanographers have been relying more on satellites and computers than on research ships or
even submarine vehicles because they can supply a greater range of information more quickly and more effectively.
Some of humankind’s most serious problems, especially those concerning energy and food, may be solved with the
help of observations made possible by this new technology.

ERROR IDENTIFICATION
There are ten mistakes in the following text. Identify and correct them.
It is very difficult to succeed in the music business; nine of ten bands that release a first record fail to produce
the second. Surviving in the music industry requires luck and patience, but most of all it requires and intricate
knowledge of how a record company is functioned. The process begins when a represent of a company’s Artist and
Repertoire (A&R) department visits bars and night clubs, scouting for young, talented bands. After the representative
identifies a promised band, he or she will work to negotiate a contract with that band. The signature of this recording
conưacl is a slow process. A company will spend a long lime to investigate the band itself as well as current trands in
popular music. During this period, it is important that a band reciprocate with an investigation of its own, learning as
