Student’s Book

11a Reading “Uncontacted tribes”

Ex. 2

1. FUNAI (Fundação Nacional do Índio) is the Brazilian department for Indian affairs.
It deals with issues involving indigenous Amazonian people and it published photos of
an uncontacted Amazonian tribe. It denounced that this tribe was under threat because
of logging.

2. Survival is a non-governmental organization (NGO).

3. Science is a prestigious scientific magazine which has featured articles on isolated
Amazonian tribes.

Ex. 3
1. The photos of an uncontacted Amazonian tribe went viral, which led to raise people’s
awareness all over the world: it raised the issue about whether something efficient was
being done to save it.

2. There is disagreement on whether or not isolated Amazonian tribes can be contacted

safely.

3. Sydney Possuelo, a former head of FUNAI, who claimed that he was sure from the
beginning that safe contact would be possible and he had organised one of the best
attempts to do so.

4. FUNAI. The organization had monitored the population of the tribes via satellite and
saw that it had increased over a period of 30 years.

5. Basically, a good life. He always said to people of the isolated tribes that there was
nothing good for them in the ‘civilised’ world.
Ex. 4
Survival claimed that contact could lead to disease and death while Science’s position
was that it was possible to contact Amazonian isolated tribes safely. Therefore, the Awá
man seems very likely to agree with Survival. He greatly values the ‘good life’ of these
tribes. Also he believes ‘there’s nothing in the outside’ for them and would advise them
not to have contact with the outside world.
