Introduction:
In the decades after independence, particularly in the 1970s, more naval infrastructure was needed.
In 1976 and 1978, respectively, two ex-Royal Navy frigates, BNS Umar Farooq and BNS Ali
Haider, joined the Bangladesh Navy. Third ex-Royal Navy frigate BNS Abu Bakr joined the BN
in 1982. The purchase of these three frigates is regarded as the Bangladesh Navy's main
cornerstone.
The 118,813 square kilometer (45,824 square mile) marine territorial area of Bangladesh is under
the control of the Bangladesh Navy, which is also in charge of defending strategic harbors, military
installations, and economic zones. The Bangladesh Navy's main duty is to defend the nation's
military and economic interests both at home and abroad. The Bangladesh navy also takes part in
humanitarian operations abroad and serves as a primary disaster control force within Bangladesh.
It actively participates in global peacekeeping with the United Nations and is a vital regional player
in counterterrorism initiatives.
