PREFACE.

IT is only during the past twenty-five years that British Colonial coins
have received a measure of attention. Prior to the publication of
Mr. Atkins’work in 1889 they attracted little notice, and although the
number of collectors of them has since increased, there is still
room for their closer study and classification.
The fact that these coins form an almost complete record of the
progress and changes that have taken place in our Colonial Empire
is proof that such study is warranted, and with the increasing interest
in their early history shown by the inhabitants of the Colonies this
series seems likely to grow in appreciation and value.
The present collection was commenced some years before the pub¬
lication of Mr. Atkins’ book, mainly with the view of adding to the
completeness of that work, and whilst containing many of the rarer
patterns and proofs, it is also rich in the current coins and tokens.
The specimens have been derived from the principal sales that have
taken place here, on the Continent, and in America, as well as from
private sources.
The catalogue will be found to contain many of the early Patterns
for the Isle of Man, and to be very rich in the coinages of the East
India Company for India and the East, especially in those struck in
the native style prior to 1793, and the initial coinages for Bombay.
The issues of the Hong Kong Mint and the various coinages for the
African continent are also fully represented.
Amongst the early American coins there are three values of the
Hog Money for Bermuda, a fine series of Massachusetts pieces (in¬
cluding a New England Shilling), and a specimen of the Lord Baltimore
Sixpence in copper ; the Rosa Americanas are well represented, amongst
them being the Pattern Twopence of 1724, and a Proof, in steel,
of the obverse of the Pattern Twopence of 1733. There are also two
unique varieties of the countermarked Dollar for Canada of 1765, and
IV PREFACE.

many very rare Patterns and Proofs for the Dominion struck under
Queen Victoria.
But, perhaps, the strongest feature will be found in the pierced,
countermarked and cut Spanish Dollars for the West Indies, numbering
some 150 pieces, as well as in specimens of Portuguese Half Dobras,
plugged and countermarked for these islands, which form the most
complete collection of these coins yet got together.
The Australian and the commoner Canadian Tokens have been
disposed of separately, otherwise the collection is intact.
The collection has, at our request, been catalogued by the vendor,
in order to place on record new facts discovered since the publication
of Mr. Atkins’ book.
