Detailed Lesson Plan in Industrial Arts

Sketching

Grade 6

Content Standard - The learner demonstrates the understanding of sketching and the
basic handling of pencil.

Performance Standard - The learner independently demonstrates the basic handling of

pencil and draw a sketch consisting of one out of five types of sketching.

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, 90% of the students are expected to be:
a. Determine the meaning of sketching.
b. Distinguish the basic handling of pencil and the five types of sketching.
c. Value the importance of knowing the basic handling of pencil and the five
types of sketching.
II. Subject Matter
a. Topic: Sketching
b. Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, laptop, television, chalk & blackboard
c. Reference: Music and Arts 6, P.p 55
III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary
Activities
Opening Prayer “Anyone who would like to lead
our prayer today? Please let us
all stand for a prayer.”
(A student will go in front.)
“…..Amen”

Greetings “Good morning class” “Good morning sir”

“How are you today? I hope you

are all well, happy and healthy.” “Yes sir”
Checking of Attendance “Before we start on our topic for
today, please keep all your
phones. I don’t want to see
anyone using a phone unless I
allow it.” “Yes, Ma’am.”

“I will check your attendance

first. From the girls may I know
who’s absent today? How about
the boys?” “None. Ma’am”

Review of previous
lesson
“Alright class, from your
previous lesson yesterday, can
anyone from the class who
would like to share what have (The students will now
you learned?” answer the questions)

“Thank you class that is correct”

B. Motivation “ARRANGE ME!”

“Before we proceed to our

discussion I have here some
jumbled letters and I want you
to arrange it and guess what
the correct word for it. Is it clear
class?”
1. LCEPIN - PENCIL
2. PPARE - PAPER
3. EREASR - ERASER
4. TRA - ART
5. KTSECH – SKETCH
“Based on these words that you
guessed do you have any idea
what will be our topic for
today?” (Learners will answer)
C. Activity Aside from its durability and
functionality, what else do you
consider in order to make your
product more marketable?
(Learners will answer)
Why do you need to enhance
the appearance of your product?
(Learners will answer)
Why do entrepreneurs
continuously creating and
innovating their products?
(Learners will answer)

1. What is the image all about?

2. How is it done?
3. Why is this being made?
4. What will happen on this
wooden surface after the
drawing is done
(Learners will answer)
Sketching is a type of drawing
that is done completely
freehand. It is a technique used
to create both the initial
representations of final drawings
and the final pieces of art. You
may use a variety of materials in
sketching.

Types of handling pencils in

sketching

1. Basic Tripod Grip. The

most common method for
holding a pencil – the same
one you probably use for
writing.
This grip can be done
through the following steps:
(a) position the pencil
between your forefinger and
middle finger;
(b) brace the opposite side
of the pencil with your
thumb;
(c) lift your wrist off of your
drawing surface; and,
(d) use both your wrist and
forearm to draw.

2. Extended Tripod Grip.

This method uses the same
hold as the basic tripod but
the grip rests further up on
the pencil

3. Underhand Grip. This is a

popular way to hold a pencil
for sketching. To perform
this, you need to accomplish
the following:
(a) pinch the pencil between
the pads of your forefinger
and thumb;
(b) rest your other fingers
against the shaft of the
pencil; and,
(c) run the tip of the pencil
along the paper using your
whole arm.
4. Overhand Grip. An
overhand grip is almost
identical to an underhand
grip except for the position
of your wrist. This can be
done through a series of
steps, which include:
(a) from the underhand grip
position, turn your wrist over
to switch to an overhand
grip; and then,
(b) shade broad areas with
the side of your pen

Five types of sketching

1. Shading is the process of
creating the illusion of form,
space, and light which can
make a drawing appear
three dimensional. There are
many shading methods that
you can use in your drawing.
Now, I want you to read and
understand the following
techniques below because
you will be applying them
later in the succeeding set of
exercises:

2. Use cross-hatching to
shade quickly. Cross-
hatching builds onto hatch
marks by adding a second
layer of lines going at an
opposite direction. This
method of shading allows
you to make areas darker
quicker than basic hatching.

3. Work with stippling for a

stylized look. Stippling is a
time-intensive process of
lifting your pencil up and
down from the paper to
make a series of dots or
short lines on your drawing.
Make an area of your
drawing darker by keeping
the dots close to one
another.

4. Use blending for a

smooth appearance.
Blending your shading gives
your drawing a smooth and
realistic finish and requires
the most time and technique
to do correctly. Shade with
the side of a soft graphite
pencil and increase the
amount of pressure you
apply to the paper to make
transitions between light and
dark values.

5. In connection to this, you

can also use another method
of decorating your finished
product through outlining or
contour drawing. Contours
are the outlines of your
drawings. So, in contour
drawing, you will only be
drawing the outline of the
subject. Its purpose is to
emphasize the mass and
volume of the subject rather
than the minor details.

D. Analysis “Okay class, again what is

sketching?”
“Sir sketching is a type of
drawing that is done
completely freehand.”

“Thank you that’s correct very

good”
“What are the types of handling
pencils in sketching?” “Sir the types of handling
pencil in sketching are basic
tripod grip, extended tripod
grip, underhand grip and
overhand grip.”

“Thank you very much”

“How about the five types of
sketching? Can you give the five “Sir the five types of
types?” sketching are shading, cross-
hatching, stippling, blending
and contours.”

“Thank you that’s correct.”

E. Application Directions. Follow the
instruction inside the box. You
will need a pencil and a piece of
bond paper for this activity.
Then, answer the questions that
follows:

1. Choose a subject/object to
draw. Sketch the basic shape
(outline) that composes the
chosen object.
2. Make a form of the object
from the drawn basic shape.
3. Apply one shading technique
in the drawing in order to add
value to the drawing.
4. Enjoy drawing your chosen
object.
“Are we clear class?”

“Yes sir”
F. Generalization “So, after drawing your object
for sketching.”
“What do you think is the
importance of knowing the basic
knowledge on sketching?”
(Learners will answer)
G. Evaluation True or false:
______1. Sketching is a type of
drawing that is done completely
freehand.
______2. Outlining can make a
drawing appear three
dimensional.
______3. Shading refers to a
drawing or sketch which
employs a single indivisible
contour to describe its subject.
______4. Leaving more space
between lines when applying
hatching will result in darker
values.
______5. Stippling uses
countless small dots to build up
darker values in a drawing.
______6. Blending your shading
gives your drawing a smooth
and realistic finish and requires
the most time and technique to
do correctly.
______7. Shading is the process
of creating the illusion of form,
space, and light.
______8. You cannot use
variety of materials in sketching.
______9. Contours are the
outlines of your drawings.
______10. Arts is not important
to our lives.
