II. Project Summary

The International Day of Mathematics (IDM) is a worldwide celebration. Each year on

March 14 all countries will be invited to participate in activities for both students and the
general public in schools, museums, libraries, and other spaces. March 14 was chosen as the
date for the IDM because it was already celebrated in many countries as PI Day, based on the
fact that some countries write it as 3/14 and the mathematical constant Pi is approximately
3.14. The International Day of Mathematics project is led by the International Mathematical
Union with the support of numerous international and regional organizations from all over the
world. It was proclaimed by UNESCO on the 40th session of the General Conference, on
November 26, 2019. The first celebration was held on March 14, 2020.

III. Program Background

The theme for the 2024 celebration of the International Day of Mathematics is “Playing
with Math”. In line with DepEd Memorandum No. 028, s.2020 with the theme “Mathematics is
Everywhere” which highlights the essential role of mathematics and its application in all
aspects of human activity. This activity aims to promote an enjoyable environment towards

In support of the International Day of Mathematics, Camp Vicente Lim Integrated School
Mathematics Department will conduct a 2024 PI Week to foster creativity, critical thinking, and
enjoyable experiences in mathematics. This activity enhances the flavor of the celebration,
sparks creativity, and brings light to connections between mathematics and all sorts of fields,
concepts, and ideas. This program will celebrate mathematical games, puzzles, and other
entertaining activities. Students will explore, experiment, and discover mathematics itself. On
the other hand, this activity will serve as fundraising to support the needs of the student
participants and their coaches in joining different contest-related activities.
This activity will follow the DO No. 09 s. 2005 on Instituting Measures to Increase
Engaged Time-on-Task and Ensuring compliance therewith. No interruption of classes will be
made during the conduct of this activity. Thus, the school's Mathematics Department and
Project REMAST (Remediation and Enhancement in Mathematics and Science and Technology)
respond to this endeavor.

IV. Objectives
The following are the goals of the said program.
1. To promote a sense of camaraderie among students, teachers, and community leaders.

C. Rubik’s Cube Rules and Mechanics

C.1 General Rule

 Rubik’s cube is a toy in the shape of a cube with nine squares on each side, each side
with different color. The game is to mix up the colors then put them back in order.
The puzzle is considered solved when each face of the cube shows a solid color.
C.2 General Mechanics
1. Registered contestants are required to bring a 3x3 regular Rubik’s Cube during
the competition.
2. There will be separate set of winners for each grade level.
3. The top 3 contestants from each grade level will be recognized as winners and will
represent their grade level for the final competition.

III. CONTEST PROPER

1. The Rubik’s Cube competition has three (3) elimination rounds for every grade level.
In each round several contestants will be eliminated.
2. In each round, contestants are given 15 seconds inspection time.
3. For Round 1, the contestants will solve one (1) Rubik’s Cube puzzle rearranged by
the facilitators.
4. The time starts immediately after the contest administrator announces the “GO”
signal. The time stops when the contestant had completely solved the puzzle (it is
said to be solved after putting it back in proper order, each face will have only one
color) and had raised their hands. An official timer will be assigned to monitor each
contestant’s speed in solving the Rubik’s Cube puzzle.
5. The time of each contestant will be recorded. All the contestants will be ranked
according to least time consumed. The top eight (8) contestants will advance to the
next round.
6. In Round 2, the qualifiers will solve two (2) Rubik’s Cube. In this round, the
qualifiers will be given the chance to rearrange the cubes of their competitors. (Ex.
The 2nd qualifier will rearrange the Rubik’s Cubes to be solved by the 1st qualifier, the
3rd qualifier will rearrange the Rubik’s cubes to be solved by the 2nd qualifier and so
on…). Again, the time consumed by each qualifier in solving the puzzle will be
recorded. The top five (5) fastest solver will qualify for the FINAL ROUND.

7. In the FINAL Round, the FINALISTS will be using three (3) Rubik’s Cube. One by
one, they will solve the cubes rearranged by the facilitators. They will be ranked
according to the least time consumed. THE TOP THREE (3) FINALISTS will be
recognized as WINNERS – 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Placers.
8. In any round, if at least one part of the cube used by any contestant is displaced from
the cube accidentally, the contestant will still be allowed to fix and continue solving
the puzzle, given that his time will also continue. However, the contestant is no longer
allowed to continue if he/she happens to place down the Rubik’s cube before the
puzzle is solved.
9. For any reason, the contestants will be allowed to perform corner twists but not in a
successive manner.
10.In case of a tie, the contestants will solve one (1) Rubik’s cube puzzle rearranged by

C. SUDOKU Levels and Mechanics

Sudoku is a game based on the logical placement of numbers that need brains
and concentration. The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9×9 grid with digits so that
each column, row, and 3×3 section contains the numbers between 1 to 9 with no
repeats. At the beginning of the game, the 9×9 grid will have some of the squares
filled in. Your job is to use logic to fill in the missing digits and complete the grid.

Generally,
 The Sudoku grid consists of 9x9 spaces.
 You can use only numbers from 1 to 9.
 Each 3×3 block can only contain numbers from 1 to 9.
 Each vertical column can only contain numbers from 1 to 9.
 Each horizontal row can only contain numbers from 1 to 9.
 Each number in the 3×3 block, vertical column or horizontal row can be
used only once.
 The game is over when the whole Sudoku grid is correctly filled with
numbers.

Sudoku has three levels namely: Easy Level, Average Level and Difficult Level.
Puzzles are rated on a scale of difficulty respectively for each level with a specified
timeframe for each level to avoid ambiguous results. But in general rule, the
fastest time in finding the correct solution will be declared as winner for every
level.

III. CONTEST PROPER

1. The Sudoku Puzzle competition has three (3) levels of difficulty: EASY LEVEL,
AVERAGE LEVEL, and DIFFICULT LEVEL. There will be an elimination round
until the first 3 students with the fastest time for each grade level successfully

completed the 3 levels of difficulty. Then, the championship round for individual
category and grade level category.
2. All participants will be categorized as individual and later as group for year level
representative. They are all competing for easy level. The first 9 students with
fastest time successfully completed the puzzle for every grade will move on the
average level.
3. In average level, same rule of competing individually. The remaining 9 students
per grade level will be ranked according to least time consumed on this level.
4. The top 6 students per grade level will compete for the difficult round. The first 3
fastest among the 6 students of respective grade will be declared as winners for
the ELIMINATION ROUND and will proceed to CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND.
5. The CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND has two categories, the INDIVIDUAL and GRADE
LEVEL. The 18 students from elimination round will compete for INDIVIDUAL
category to gain the SUDOKU MASTER of CVLIS 2024 or the champion.
6. After the individual category, GRADE LEVEL category is another way to represents
their respective grade to gain the BEST SUDOKU TRIO OF CVLIS 2024.
7. In any case of hardship in finding the correct solution for every level and puzzle
given, the specified time limit will be set and impose for every level of difficulty to
avoid ambiguous results. For easy level, the time limit given to each participant is
3 minutes. For average is 5 minutes and for difficult is 7 minutes. Note, it is a
simultaneous puzzle competition for every level both in elimination and
championship round.

IV. VENUE

ALGEBRAIC TILES CHALLENGE: AN INDIVIDUAL CATEGORY for Grade 8
Students

I. OBJECTIVE

 To improve students’ prowess, skills, and expertise in representing algebraic

expressions through tiles.
 To develop full potentials in terms of logical and manipulative placement of
algebraic tiles and brain concentration of the students.
 To increase students’ ability to think constructively and gain confidence
throughout the entire activity.

II. RULES AND REGULATIONS

A. Eligibility
Open to all grade 8 students and participation is on individual basis.
(Limits of participants are subject to the decision of the facilitators)
B. Registration
Interested participants must register by filling out a registration form given
by the organizers/facilitators.

C. Mechanics
Algebraic tiles are one of the effective tools in teaching algebra, especially in
modeling expression and equation. Algebra Tiles are a set of square and
rectangular-shaped tiles used to represent integers (or constants) and variables.
They are a visual, area-based model in which the shape of each tile is related to
the unit square. The tiles employ this area model of multiplication, which needs to
be explored and emphasized as students begin to work with the tiles. This
combination/connection to geometry makes Algebra Tiles a powerful kinesthetic
and visual tool.

Generally,
 The tiles come in different color and sizes.
 Tile size model the value of the variables and constants.
 Tile colors emphasize on the sign of the variables and constants.
 Each expression represented by tiles are arranged in manner of which
expression has the highest degree up to constant of the expression for 2 or
more terms.
 Each equation represented by tiles are arranged in manner subdivided by
a vertical line into 2 columns, representing the Left hand and right
solution of the equation.
 Proper representation of tiles as to the terms are required.
 Modeling expression and equation are scored by fastest time and correct
arrangement.

Algebraic Tiles Challenge has 2 levels namely: Expression Level, and Equation
Level. But in general rule, the fastest time and accurate representation of tiles will
get a higher score and the participants with the highest points will be declared as
winner.

III. CONTEST PROPER

1. The Algebraic Tiles Challenge has two (2) levels of difficulty: EXPRESSION LEVEL,
and EQUATION LEVEL. Each expression worth 3 points each and 5 points each
for equation representation.
2. All participants will be categorized as individual and will be given a complete set of
tiles. They all are competing in the 2 levels. (*The facilitator may adjust depends
on the availability of the algebraic tiles, and may uses format of groupings).
3. In Expression level, participants shall use the tiles to represent each expression
properly, those who will show correct representation on the time limit will get 3
points in each expression. This level allows the students to show their tiles work
for 10 seconds.
4. In Equation level, participants shall use the tiles to represent each equation
properly, those who will show correct representation on the time limit will get 5
points in each equation. This level allows the students to show their tiles work for
15 seconds.
5. The scores of the participants shall be sum up after the 2 levels, the target is to
have the highest points accumulated. The top 3 with the highest scores rank shall
declared winners accordingly.
6. In case of a tie, additional round shall be given to the participants and with the
fastest and correct representation shall be declared ahead and assume the higher
position.

IV. VENUE
Teacher facilitator in grade 8 level will select a classroom of their choice to conduct
the elimination and championship round.

B. Registration
Interested participants must register by filling out a registration form given
by the organizers/facilitators.

C. Mechanics

1. Set the starting position of the chips.

2. Toss a coin to determine which player will have the first “move”.
3. Moving a cheap means sliding it diagonally in the forward direction only except
when taking an opponent’s chip or if a dama chip takes an opponent’s chip.
4. The two players alternately take turns in moving a chip (pass is not allowed). A
player who touches a chip (touch move) is required to move unless it is not
possible to do so. After each move a player must record his or her move in a
scoresheet (only one scoresheet will be used by the two players.
5. Each player is allotted one minute per move including the recording of the
move and the corresponding score in the scores sheet. In as much as taking a
chip or chips is mandatory, then the one-minute per move does not apply in
this situation. In taking an opponent’s chip, the taker chip jumps over the
taken chip and uses any of the four operation symbols of +.-. x and ÷ when the
taker chip land.
6. A chip declared dama if it stops in any of the following squares of the opposing
player. (1,0) ( 3, 0) ( 5,0) ( 7, 0). Similarly, the opposing player’s chip is declared
dama if it stops in any of the following squares (0,7) (2.7) (4.7) (6.7). A dama
chip can slide diagonally forward or backward in any unoccupied square if no
opponent ‘s dama chip blocked its path. It could take a chip or chips whereby
its corresponding sum, difference, product, or quotient is doubled.
Correspondingly, if a dama chip takes an opponent’s dama chip, then its
scored is quadrupled. A taker chip can take one chip or more than one chips
with the required option to take the greater number of chips. Between a dama
chip taking an opponent’s chip and a chip taking an opponent’s chip the

former prevails. A taker or taken dama chip should be identified by encircling
it in the scoresheet.
7. The game ends if the 20 minute game period lapsed, the moves are repetitive, a
player has no more chips to move, an opponent’s chip is “cornered”.
8. The remaining chip or chips of the players are to be added to the respective
scores. If the remaining chip is dama then its score is also doubled.
9. The player with the greater accumulated total score wins the game.
