Social Control:
Social control is a concept within the disciplines of the social sciences.[1] Social control is
described as certain set of rules and standards in society that keep individuals bound to
conventional standards as well as to the use of formalized mechanisms. The term "social control"
was first introduced to sociology by Albion Woodbury Small and George Edgar Vincent in 1894.
The term, ‘social control’, is widely used in sociology to refer to the social processes by which
the behavior of individuals or groups is regulated. Since all societies have norms and values
governing conduct (a society without some such norms and values is inconceivable),. Social
control is consequently a pervasive feature of society, of interest to a broad range of sociologists
having differing theoretical The term, ‘social control’, is widely used in sociology to refer to the
social processes by which the behavior of individuals or groups is regulated. Since all societies
have norms and values governing conduct (a society without some such norms and values is
inconceivable), all equally have some mechanisms for ensuring conformity to those norms and
for dealing with deviance. Social control is consequently a pervasive feature of society, of
interest to a broad range of sociologists having differing theoretical.

Importance of social Control:

Social control is necessary for maintaining order in the society. It is necessary for every society
or group to maintain its social order and this is possible only when its members behave in
accordance with that social order. An important objective of social control is to maintain the old
order.

Most Effective Form of social Control:

The most effective form of social control is not laws, police, and jails. Rather, it is the
internalization of the moral codes by the members of society. As children grow up they normally
learn what is proper and improper, right and wrong, good and bad.

Characteristics of Social control:

Following are the characteristics of social control.

Purpose of social control:
According to Kimball young, it is necessary “to bring about conformity, solidarity, and
continuity of a particular group or society”. The three purposes of social control mentioned by
Kimball Young,
Role of social control in family:
Family is an important agency of social control. It is the first place where an individual is
socialized. He learns various methods of living, behavior patterns, convention etc. Through
these, mechanism family forces the individual to conform the custom, folkways and modes of the
group Social control is exercised through individuals and institutions, ranging from the family, to
peers, and to organizations such as the state, religious organizations, schools, and the workplace.
Regardless of its source, the goal of social control is to maintain conformity to established norms
and rules. The family has always provided a strong means of social control in its direct influence
on the behavior of its members. However, with the changing nature of the family structure in
modern Britain, the family’s ability to provide an effective means of social control has been
called into question. Role of social control is very important because without social control
social unity would be a mere dream. Social control regulates behavior in accordance with
established norms which brings uniformity of behavior and leads to unity among the individuals.
The family maintains its unity because its members behave in a Simi-lar manner in accordance
with family norms.

committed by Lininger scale and found that the parenting style of parents,
children constructive and destructive behavior because of the leading role and
the importance of parents there is a significant relationship. Therefore, notifying
parents and family education campaigns to foster healthy individuals in the
community is very important and relevant organizations should play a more
active role in this regard.
2. Karimi (2001) stated in his article:
o "The relationship between religious attitudes and practices parenting attitudes
girls" put into research. Statistical analysis showed that the attitude of parenting
style (authoritative) achievement (grade point average and score
Sciences)students and a significant positive correlation between attitude

parenting(authoritarian) mother, there is a significant negative relationship

Among attitudes parenting styles (authoritative, loose, tyranny) mother and
achievement (grade point average, the science and math score) were observed

3. Ghamsari (1993) stated in his article:
o The "social role of the family in children". The results showed that the more

to be better community. Nailing (2010) in a longitudinal study about "the effect
of family and education on the academic results of different groups of students
with demographic variables and inputs their school" came to the conclusion that
the academic achievement of students with multiple components of the family as
beliefs and expectations of parents, disciplinary actions and interventions,
parents, family emotional environment governing the family and available
resources are linked (Quoted from Haydar Weiss, 1999). Secker et al (2009) in
their study as "social skills and behavior on the issue of foster preschoolers with

social situations and social participation of less efficient Children are reflective
of the behavior of children in situations of problem solving and attention deficit

children a sense of guilt and shame were maladaptive behaviors and these
behaviors were attributed to natural causes. Mothers to their children more
aggressive for teaching social skills instruction methods were used and they
were indifferent toward maladaptive behaviors. (Quoted from Mehrabizadeh,
1997)And even this condition may affect the relationship between the candidate
and partner. (According to Zarei, 2011)

o A study titled "marital discord parents in child development and behavior of the
Fathers" that different parents in raising children leads to behavioral problems in
children and leads to behavioral problems of a more to marital adjustment of the.
(Quoted from Haydar Weiss, 1999) Makobi and Martin (1983) showed that the
receptive parents control children's behavior. On-receptive parents to allow
children to want to do what parents are willing to accept to accept children and
meet their needs. Indifferent parents reject their children and consider first their
demands.
o (According to Schiffer, 1996) Bam rind’s study (1978) showed that children
whose parents are warm and accepting more happy, self-reliant and show more
autonomy, self-esteem and high skills. In contrast, parents caring for children of
different ages have negative effects, such as anxiety, agitation, anxiety, social
dysfunction and low mora growth of their children. (Bam rind, 1978)
6. Lamborn et al. (1991) stated in his article:

observed violence between parents held lower levels of parental attachment
and were more likely to offend violently. Further, lower levels of parental
monitoring were also related to adolescent partner violence.
18. Chapple (2003) stated in his article:
o That the findings are consistent with the claim made by control theory that
parental attachment and bonding reduces the likelihood of delinquency.
19. Brannigan et al. (2002) stated in his article:
o That positive parental contact and parental support were not found to affect
childhood misconduct.

Research methodology:
In planning a study's design, sociologists generally choose from four widely used methods of
social investigation: survey, experiment, field research, and textual or secondary data
analysis (or use of existing sources).

Discussion:
All societies impose social control on their citizens to some degree. They monitor and
regulate behavior formally and informally. This is one of the most important prerogatives of
political leaders. In addition to exerting their political will, they strongly influence or
actually manage the mechanisms of social control. In large-scale societies, the most visible
mechanisms are laws, courts, and police. However, law and the legal bureaucracy that
administers it is only one aspect of social control and is usually the least effective one. As
you will see in the next section of this tutorial, small-scale societies maintain social control
without the complex legal institutions with which we are familiar. However, this does not
mean that they are without laws. The most effective form of social control is not laws, police,
and jails. Rather, it is the internalization of the moral codes by the members of society. As
children grow up they normally learn what is proper and improper, right and wrong, good
and bad. If a society is able to indoctrinate all of its members to accept its moral code, it will
not need to use police or other external means of social control. In the early 1950's, the
American sociologist David Riesman referred to this most effective form of social control as
being inner directed, or conscience controlled, in regards to social norms. The conscience
of inner directed people will not allow them to knowingly break the law. Less effective
social control is achieved when the members of a society are other directed, or only shame
oriented, in regards to norms. For such people, right and wrong are more ambiguous, and
they normally only feel bad when they get caught and are publicly shamed for deviating from
the norms. In reality, the same individual may be inner directed for some norms and other
directed for others. For instance, most North American drivers regularly exceed the legal
speed limits and don't feel bad about it unless they are caught by a policeman. On the other
hand, the vast majority of these same drivers would not drive away from a car accident that
they caused. As a result, police do not spend much time watching for hit and run accidents,
but they do work hard at catching speeders.

Conclusion:
Education is a process of socialization, it prepares the child for social living and reforms the
attitudes wrongly formed by children already. It teaches them the values of discipline, social
cooperation, tolerance and sacrifice. It encourages the individual qualities of honesty, fairness,
sense of right and wrong. It gives him the ability to succeed in his struggle for existence. The
child learns to respect the opinion and advice of others; hence education is a necessary condition
for the proper exercise of social control. All societies have ways to produce order, stability and
predictability in social life. Without social control, social life would be unpredictable, even
chaotic.
