ROADBASE – PAVEMENT WORKS

1.0 PURPOSE

This purpose is to define and establish the method statement to be used for
construction of flexible pavement such as roadbase layer.

2.0 SCOPE

To provide clear instruction for construction, of flexible pavement.

2.1 The work shall be performed in accordance with the horizontal alignments,
surface levels.
2.2 The longitudinal regularity of the surfaces shall be carried out as shown on
drawing and specification.

3.0 REFERENCES

BS 1377 Test 15B (Sand Replacement Method);

Test 13 (Maximum Dry Density).
Test 16 5.1/1975(California Bearing Rations).
Standard Drawing & JKR Spec.

6.1 Approved roadbase materials shall be delivered to site by tipper trucks.

6.2 Maximum particle size shall be not exceeded the size shown on JKR Spec.
6.3 Material shall conform with specification :
a) Crushed Aggregate –CBR shall not be less than 80% (CBR > 80%).

7.0 EQUIPMENT’S

7.1 Motor Grader;

7.2 Water Tanker;
7.3 Tipper Trucks;
7.4 Vibrating Compactor;

8.0 SAFETY CONDITION

Refer to Safety Booklet

9.0 ACTIVITY PROCESS

9.1 Method of working for subbase preparation.

9.1.1 Work shall commence on site upon approval and acceptance of the
subbase.

9.1.2 The subbase shall be leveled and compacted by using vibratory roller
after compaction of any specified subbase in pavement area.

9.1.3 Verification of the subbase compaction shall be carried out using sand
replacement method or other method deemed suitable by the engineer.

9.2 Construction Procedure

9.2.1 Works shall commence on site upon approval and acceptance of the
subbase layer.

9.2.2 Approval roadbase material shall be delivered to site by tipper trucks.

9.2.4 Compaction using vibratory roller shall commence when the moisture
value compaction shall be carried out in a single layer.

9.2.5 The surface of the crushed aggregate roadbase and grades,by the
drawing and comply with the tolerance ( +0mm – 20mm ) specified.

9.2.6 On compaction of laying and compaction joint survey and insitu density
measurement shall be conducted to check for compliance with the
specified requirement.

9.2.7 Compaction requirement

Method of compaction to achieve not less than 95% of the maximum
Dry Density as dererminede by BS 1377 Test 13 ( 4.5kg remmer
method ).

9.3 Field control

9.3.1 Compaction trial

a. Compaction trial shall be out to asses the suitability of the
compaction plant and to establish the rolling pattern required to
achieve the specified compaction required.
b. Compaction shall be carried out using vibratory roller with
specifications as given below :

Model : Dynapac CA 25 or equivalent

Operating weight total : 10,400 kg

Vibration Frequency : 1700rpm – 28.3 Hz

Speed : 3 – 5 km/hr

In order to achieve the specified compacted density,compaction using the

vibrator roller as specified / equivalent shall commence only when the moisture
content of the subbase determined in accordance with BS 1377 test 13.
