❖ “And so I was lost, without any bearings… What could
be worse than that?”
➢ after she has been disconnected from God and
she feels alone in the universe
➢ “MARJI, RUN TO THE BASEMENT ! WE’RE BEING
BOMBED !!”
➢ lone Marji floating out in space. Her face, is
blank and emotionless
➢ Combining a frantic speech bubble and an
unresponsive Marji in the same panel emphasizes
how withdrawn Marji is.
➢ Satrapi uses the large panel to signify two
different things, how small Marji feels in this
moment and the polar extremes between the
quiet of space and the force of the bombs
Gutter:
What is a ‘gutter’ ?
● The space between the panels.
Why is it important?
● acts as an invisible messenger
within comics
● passes information but is simply
an empty space.
● the reader moves from one
panel to the next and comes to
a conclusion about what is
happening.

ART
ART:
❖ Persepolis chose to employ
simplistic, undetailed cartooning.
❖ According to Mcloud, the more
accurate, detailed faces actually
detract from the novel’s realism,
whereas in the more “cartoonified”
depictions it is easier for the
audience to project the mental state
upon them.
❖ So in a sense, it is the reader who
fills in the image’s detail thereby
achieving a greater believability in
the character by the reader.
