“The Relationship Between Vocabulary Mastery and

Students’ Speaking Proficiency”

Background: The reason why I interested for conducting this study is to

investigate the relationship between students' speaking proficiency and their
vocabulary mastery. This is important because vocabulary is a crucial component
of language learning, and speaking proficiency is a key indicator of language
proficiency. So, I'm curious whether the two things are related and influence each
other or not at all.

Focus of the study: The focus of this study is to examine the relationship
between students' speaking proficiency and their vocabulary mastery, and to
determine whether there is a correlation between the two.

Research question(s):

 Is there a correlation between students' speaking proficiency and their

vocabulary mastery?

 Does vocabulary mastery have an impact on students' speaking

proficiency?

 Does speaking proficiency have an impact on students' vocabulary

mastery?

Objective(s): The objectives of this study is to determine the relationship between

students' speaking proficiency and their vocabulary mastery. Besides, this study
conducted to investigate the impact of vocabulary mastery on students' speaking
proficiency and to investigate the impact of speaking proficiency on students'
vocabulary mastery.
Theoretical review:

 Definition of Vocabulary: Vocabulary is acquired incidentally through

indirect exposure to words and intentionally through explicit
instruction in specific words and word-learning. Richards, J. C., &
Renandya, W. A. (2002) stated that vocabulary is a basic competencies
of language proficiency that can help students to speak, listen, read,
and write.

 The importance of Vocabulary Mastery: According to Tarigan (1984),

he points out the importance of vocabulary in the language learning. He
states the language skills depend on the competency of vocabulary.
Thus, the more vocabulary is mastered, the bigger possibility that
someone can be skillfully use the languageVocabulary is an essential
element of language that links the four language skills of listening,
speaking, reading, and writing. It is crucial for understanding a
language and plays a significant role in communication. Vocabulary
mastery involves comprehensive knowledge to recognize, understand,
and produce words and their meanings.

 Definition of Speaking: Burns & Joyce, (1997) maintains that speaking

is often spontaneous, open-ended, and evolving. Speaking requires
learners to not only produce specific points of language such as
grammar, pronunciation, or vocabulary (linguistic competence) but
also understand when, why, and in what ways to produce language
(sociolinguistic competence). Speech has its own skills, structures, and
conventions different from written language. A good speaker
synthesizes these skills and knowledge to succeed in a given speech
act. Speaking is the productive skill and is closely linked to listening. It
involves producing meaningful text and cannot be separated from
pronunciation

 Importance of Speaking Skill: Ur (2009:120) states that speaking is the

most important skills of all the four language skills because individuals
who learn a language are referred to as the speakers of that language.
speaking not only know how to produce specific point of language like
grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and other that are in linguistic
competence, but also learners need understanding about when, why,
and in what ways to produce language or apply the sociolinguistic
competenceSpeaking skill is crucial in language learning, especially
for second and foreign language acquisition. Success in using a
language depends on the proficiency in speaking. Therefore,
developing speaking proficiency is essential for language learners.

Setting: SMA N 2 Wonosari, Gunungkidul

Subjects (participants): The participants are the 10th grade students from 2
different classes at SMA N 2 Wonosari. I will choose a random class, 1 from
science class, and 1 from social studies class.

Instruments:

 Vocabulary Test: A vocabulary test can be used to measure

participants' vocabulary mastery. This test can be in the form of a
written test or an oral test.

 Speaking Test: A speaking test can be used to measure participants'

speaking proficiency. This test can be in the form of a conversation or
a presentation.

Data analysis techniques:

 Data Collection: The first step is to collect the language proficiency

scores of the students. This can be obtained from various sources such
as language proficiency tests, test results, classroom assessments, or
online language learning platforms.

 Group Analysis: Since language proficiency data includes grade levels,

a group analysis will allow for the examination of the scores by these
groups to identify any significant differences.

 Visualization: Creating visualizations such as bar charts, line graphs,

or scatter plots can help in better understanding the trends and patterns
in the data. Visual representations of the data can provide valuable
insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each student and help in
planning targeted interventions to address specific areas of
improvement.

 Quantitative Analysis: For the vocabulary test, quantitative analysis

methods can be used to calculate the average score for vocabulary
mastery. This can help in identifying patterns and trends in the
vocabulary proficiency of the students.

 Qualitative Analysis: For the speaking test, qualitative analysis

methods can be used to evaluate the quality of participants' speech.
This may involve assessing linguistic complexity, fluency, vocabulary
range, pronunciation, interactional competence, and discourse
coherence.

 Correlation Analysis: After analysing the vocabulary and speaking test

results, correlation analysis can be performed to determine the
relationship between students' speaking proficiency and their
vocabulary mastery. This analysis can provide insights into the extent
of the correlation and the strength of the relationship between the two
variables.
