A monument to fame
American entertainers know they have made it to the top when they get a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame. This 2.1-kilometre section of road is located in the Hollywood district
of Los Angeles, California. 1_____ The five-point stars are made from a pink stone-like
material called terrazzo and have brass edges. Each star bears the name of the person who
received it and a symbol representing the category of his or her contribution to the
entertainment industry.
When the Walk of Fame was first launched in March 1960, stars were granted in only four
categories: Motion Pictures, Television, Recording or Music, and Radio. 2_____ Nearly half of
all the stars have been awarded in the Motion Picture category, and just under a quarter in
Television. Approximately twenty new stars are given each year.
Anyone can apply for a star, but an application will only be considered if the person has been
