Installation and use
D.1 INSTALLATION
TRANSPORT
Equipment must be handled with the maximum care and attention avoiding to expose it to dust, rain or
to polluting agents.
During the transport the equipment must be firmly fixed and well anchored to prevent movements that
could damage it.
At its arrival, verify the integrity of the equipment, of all of its components and of the attached
documentation (i.e. manual of instructions, use and maintenance). In case of not conformity,
immediately signal it to the forwarder and to SLINGOFER MECCANICA S.p.A.
UNLOAD
The unloading operations must be done by well instructed personal that must carefully observe all the
relative anticipated safety rules in order to avoid damages to people and things.
The weight to be lifted (tong weight or component) is mentioned on the package, if foreseen,
or on the plate placed on the tong or the component.
For the lifting and the handling of the equipment there are no special difficulties:
¾ if a fork lifter is used, this must be of correct capacity (greater than the weight to be lifted) and
with forks of length corresponding to the total width of the equipment;
¾ Otherwise, use the special attacks for the hook crane. It is forbidden to lift the equipment using
other elements of anchorage (i.e. levers or not suitable components).
The machine can be delivered partially disassembled: during assembling, lock the screws till
the value mentioned in the drawings.
Before starting the lifting manoeuvres of the equipment or component, verify that the operator is far
from the load.
Don't lift the load (equipment or component) if this is badly slung: check that it is good balanced
lifting it to a short height from the ground.
INSTALLATION
Always wear the gloves during the operations of installation and of use generally.
Preliminary operation
Check the oil level inside the gear motor unscrewing the oil level cap and if necessary add oil.
Different oil from that mentioned in the manual could cause malfunctions of the
equipment (therefore see the attached “LUBRICATION SCHEME”)
Connect equipment electrically only after eventual addition of oil.
Operator must reserve the necessary space to the equipment for the lifting and handling
of the load, delimiting it and protecting it to avoid the presence of people during the
work.
Dangerous zone: any inside zone and /or in proximity of the equipment in which the presence of a
person constitutes a risk for the safety and his health
Only skilled and qualified personnel can handle and manoeuvre the lifting equipment.
The crane operator must follow the operating instructions and prescriptions concerning
the general safety rules dealing with the lifting equipment and, in particular, the
prescriptions given by the crane manufacturer
Descent with the crane hook, with ropes in vertical position and centred, stopping it to the correct level
of the suspension group.
Check that connection pins of the suspension braces are compatible with the inside frame of the hook,
in not, use eyebolts or shackles.
Check that anti-release of the system on the crane is efficient and functional.
ELECTRICAL SUPPLY
Equipment is supplied with complete electrical system on board, foreseen for the
connection to the general system by means of a socket.
Electrical system on board is realized in conformity to the CEI-EN rules and it satisfies the national
and European safety dispositions for lifting and transport equipments.
Electrical control panel is included in the scope of supply (see manual of use of electrical part 2627-
ME) but all electrical connections will be at customer’s charge.
The interventions on the electric system must be done by expert and trained personal,
according to the indications of the electric diagrams, taking care of the following operations:
check the absence of tension in the power line;
execute the wirings using the attached diagram to the manual present;
foresee an adequate protection to the cables from possible bumps or heat sources;
check the compatibility of the general interrupter with the components on tong board;
before electrically connecting the tong, make sure that the characteristics of the power
line (tension and frequency) correspond to those of plate.
D.2 USE
The knowledge of the crane controls (particularly of the push-button panel) is important for the correct
and safety use of the lifting equipment
The use of the equipment in safety is strictly connected to the efficiency of the safety devices of the
principal lifting equipment.
The equipment is predisposed for the following manoeuvres (by means of the push-button panel pr the
remote control):
• clamping jaws opening;
• clamping jaws closing;
• descent of feeler pin on the chocks;
• barycentre research.
The operator must do visual and functional controls of the equipment before put it in service, in
particular:
♦ state of the carpentry (wear, deformations, etc.);
♦ state of the mechanisms (slacks, housings, etc.);
♦ adjust the function of opening/closing system;
♦ state of the clamping areas;
♦ control of the presence of the plates and exposed signals;
♦ control of efficiency of crane suspension.
• It is forbidden to lift and handle pieces different from those mentioned in “features of products to
lift”.
• It is forbidden to lift and handle loads that outweigh the lifting equipment capacity, and please
check the crane capacity, as the lifting equipment self weight+ the load weight must not exceed the
crane capacity.
• It is forbidden to lift more than one load at the same time, if this specific use was not included in the
tong duty and it is also forbidden to lift pieces, whenever there are on the loads some materials or
pieces that might fall down.
• For the use of the equipment in particular plants or environments where it is not possible to check
from control place all the action zone, the operator must ask for the intervention of a person that
give him instructions of the correct manoeuvres.
• During lifting or lowering the load, no people must stay under the load.
Eventual operators on the ground must be in the safety zones, far from the
action zone of the lifting device.
• Use the acustical signal to advise people who are still in the action zone.
• After being clamped, the load must be lifted at few centimetres from the ground in order to check
its stability.
• Afterwards the load itself must be lifted at a height that prevents the load to collide or strike against
the obstacles on its way.
• Equipment and load must be handled far from people exposed to any eventual risks.
• The load transport and handling must be made over special
lanes and spaces, in order to avoid the loads to be lifted NO
over people. The reason is that, if the load falls down, it
must not cause any danger or damages.
• To avoid oscillations of the load during the manoeuvres,
the lifting hook of the crane must be as much as possible
on the vertical of the barycentre of the load.
• It is forbidden to rotate the load by making it collide
against other material or structures.
• To avoid unbalances of the load move the equipment using always low speeds and avoid abrupt
accelerations or decelerations.
• It is forbidden and it is dangerous to drive the load directly with your hands manually.
• It is forbidden to lower the load and/or the lifting equipment by making it oscillate or swing, as that
may hurt the workers on the ground.
• Never stay near the equipment in case of oscillations.
• It is forbidden to leave the equipment with attached loads.

Maintenance,
Controls and periodical
Tests
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
The ordinary and extraordinary maintenance must be made only by skilled and trained staff,
It is forbidden to get on the equipment.
User is authorized to proceed only with the ordinary maintenance (greasing, screw
checks,..).
Competence required:
- Mechanical maintenance operator, qualified and specialized
-Electrical maintenance operator, qualified and specialized
- Technician of manufacturer
We remember that for operator employed to the maintenance, we intend experienced and competent
person, opportunely educated and trained, and expressly authorized, who, gives the implicit risks, can
intervene on the equipment for ordinary or extraordinary maintenance.
The manufacturer declines every responsibility if maintenance cycles, verification and
inspection are not correctly respected as pointed out in this manual and in the attached
documentation, as well as when activity is submitted to personal not competent or if performed
procedures or used material are non compatible with features mentioned in the manual
Before every intervention of maintenance:
• Place the equipment of its special support and check its stability.
• Release the equipment for the crane hook
• Disconnect the electrical power supply
• Start the maintenance only after having checked temperature of
components cannot cause burns on contact
Control and maintenance operations, with low safety, must be done with the responsibility of only one
person, competent and authorized. During these operations it is necessary to avoid the access the
interested area to non authorized people.
After the control and maintenance operation in low safety, the operatively of the equipment with active
protection must be restored as soon as possible.
During the control and maintenance operations, the operating area must be free from obstacles and
well illuminated.
Before performing reparations or other interventions on the equipment, advise other
operators about your intention, placing a panel with the sentence: “DO NOT START
UP, MACCHINA IN MAINTENANCE” on the electrical main switch.
Record all reparation, maintenance works etc on the “maintenance schedules”
(placed at the end of sec. sec. A),
With the purpose to have a complete chronicle of the interventions on the
The maintenance inspector has the obligation to immediately signal whatever anomaly: i.e.
cracks, not efficient protective elements, loose bolts, rusted and inefficient components and he
has to handle the correct restoration of the normal conditions or however to verify that someone
provides about it.
To guarantee a good functionality and duration of the equipment, we suggest to do the followings
controls with the suitable frequencies, with exception of eventual exceptional interventions.

Meccanica S.p.A. causes the immediate decadence of the guarantee and of Slingofer’s
responsibility in case of possible accidents that could be verified in phase of use and
maintenance of the equipment.
LUBRICATION
Sliding components lubrication has to be done by grease and given means of brush: in particular we
recommend special multifunctional grease “Vulcan-SC” firmed by “Anderol Italia srl”
Sliding pads (for clamping jaws) are provided by grease nipples. Some tong operating positions may
hide and reduce access to grease nipples: for this reason brush greasing is recommended too.
Periodically grease the pins, by means of the special greasers according to the periodicity mentioned in
the scheme of lubrication of the equipment
During ordinary maintenance controls or in case some shaking of clamping jaws during open/close
tong movements are occurring, it is necessary to set gear motor incorporated clutch.
Clutch is in fact a protection: it operates whenever either clamping jaws reach mechanical stroke ends
(both in opening and closing) or clamping jaws are closing material to be clamped and operator keeps
on pushing closing push-button. (Of course, only in cases of fault of end-stroke micro switches).
In these case clutch operates to avoid overheating of electrical gear motor.
In any case working time generates normal wear of clutch, thus force transferred by clutch reduces and
some difficulties in clamping jaws sliding movement occur.
Thus a new clutch setting intervention is required.
Procedure:
A
1. Screw clockwise nut “A”.
2. Check electrical gear motor absorbing value during
arms movement
3. Check electrical gear motor absorbing value during
clutch intervention (for example with manual
positioned block between arms)
Maintain, in relation to the environment in which the equipment works, a state of general cleaning, so
that it is easy to individualize possible anomalies.
With reference to the norm ISO 9927 are made necessary, for the use in safety of the equipment, the
followings inspections with periodicity:
ANNUAL: CONTROLS AND TESTS BY AN EXPERT TECHNICIAN
Expert technician: " Person that, for his basic education and experience, has enough
knowledge in the field of the lifting devices and has enough familiarity with the relative
rules to determine the deviations of the appropriate conditions (that is to say a person
expressly trained)”.
The expert technician in relation to the state of the structure and the state of the maintenance, will
effect carefully:
1) Controls on carpentry conditions.
2) Controls of the mechanisms conditions.
3) Control of the effected maintenance.
4) Tests on the equipment ability of lifting.
5) Control of maintenance of the limits of use.
6) Various controls of the equipment.
He must express an evaluation of the state of maintenance of the equipment, with possible execution of
non destructive controls and release of the relative certificates (particularly: liquid penetrating on the
wildings; 100% ultrasounds on the pins).
The Expert Technician will compile a file annotating all applied modifications or modification to
be applied, as well as the quantity of effected cycles.

number of residual cycles with particular reference to the duration of work.
IMPORTANT!!
Copy of annual and fortnight controls must be integral part of the manual.
All reparation, maintenance work, etc. must be recorded on the schedules with
the purpose to have a complete chronicle of the interventions on the machine.
For the complete and reliable analysis of the life of the equipment it is necessary
to know as this is employed.
In the registration schedule of intervention of the present manual must be
recorded the number of theoretical cycles actually effected till the day of the
intervention of maintenance.
SECTION F
Residual Risks
Despite it has been taken (from the planning to the realization) and adopted all the measures and
safety devices at the highest level, some residual risks remain in some operations of lifting,
maintenance and inspection, operator must take them into consideration during the operations and
always pay the maximum attention.
The equipment, if used correctly, does not involve particular situations of risk, although these can be
eliminated by operator ability only.
Avoid to use the jacks of chocks anti-rotation feeler pins to the maximum stroke: there could be
mechanical breakups in the mechanism
The jacks always have to be placed on the chocks with consequent driving of the limit switch that
stops the electric motor.
B. Maintenance
Owing to the geometry of some components of the equipment, to the presence of power sources,
and to the necessity of maintenance intervention to ladders, galleries, specific devices, there some
risks of:
¾ lesions or cuts to persons due to the presence of sharp edges on components that compose the
machine;
¾ electric shock: Switch off, lock the disconnecting switch, check that the electrical
connection between tong and power supply is interrupted;
¾ falling due to the presence of scales and footbridges;
¾ contact with oil or grease;
¾ burns in case of contact with warm parts of the machine.

Centre have not been correctly applied or in case of improper lifting or lifting of
heavier loads than the foreseen ones on the project
A vulkollan plate can be assembled under the case to avoid any eventual damage of coil surface during
loading.
VULKOLLAN “A”
PROTECTION Fixing screws with
PLATE nut for vulkollan
protection
If it is necessary to disassemble the steel plate too (that supports of the vulkollan plate):
e) adequately place the plate in vulkollan in a stable position to avoid falls and accidents to the
operators
f) unscrew the nuts and the screws “B” that connect the steel plate to the carrying structure.
g) Execute the phases b), c), d).
h) Adequately sustaining the plate in steel, screw the screws "B" to the carrying case.
Attention: if vulkollan plate or steel plate is not well placed on the ground in a stable
position, this could fall with consequent damages to people and things placed near it,
therefore always use adequate supports
Attention: in relation to the equipment features, the weight of the steel plate and/or the
weight of the vulkollan plate, could be higher than that allowed by the applicable
legislation in safety subject, therefore always use suitable lifting devices.
In case of use in hot condition, in order to the clutch and the transmission group, tong can be equipped
by a special steel protection under the case.
STEEL PROTECTION

BACK PROTECTION
Install plates of protection on the back part of Fixing
the lifting arms, means to avoid materials screws
damages in case of collision during the
movement of the tongs.
Attention: in relation to the equipment features, the weight of each plate or leader
protection could be higher than that allowed by the applicable legislation in safety subject,
therefore always use suitable lifting devices.
Each clamping arm can be composed by a sliding plate that allows the
clamping and loading of the coil on the feet without any sliding on the
vertical sides.
