B: Academic Content

Course aim and objectives:

This course is designed to introduce students to the study of language development and
acquisition. Students are also provided with an introduction to many subfields of linguistics
including phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, pragmatics, historical linguistics,
psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics. To implement experiential, participatory, and
process-oriented strategies, students are strongly encouraged to engage actively in
discussions and written assignments that examine the basic techniques and concepts in the
subfields of contemporary linguistics.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Describe the nature of human language: What it is, what it is used for, and how it works.
2. Introduce students briefly to some of the innovative and recent subfields of linguistics:
Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Semantics, Pragmatics, Syntax, Discourse Analysis,
etc.
3. Distinguish various linguistic systems and methods that linguists use to investigate
language properties.
4. Apply the basic rules of different subfields of linguistics
6. Analyze the study of first and second language development and acquisition.
