Operating Notes for Emergency Lighting Control Gear

Specification Product Safety

Supply Voltage: 220-240Vac 50/60Hz The control gear relies on the luminaire enclosure for protection against accidental contact
Ambient Temperature Range: 0°C … +50°C with live parts. It is considered as built-in, and provides basic insulation between live parts and
its external surfaces. It does not require the use of a protective earth.
Control gear complies with IEC/EN 61347-2-7.
Basic insulation is provided between live supply and DALI control conductors, and reinforced
Dimensions insulation is present between the live supply and the battery circuit.

The control gear battery charge circuit has deep discharge and short circuit protection that will
continue to charge batteries once a short circuit is removed.

The luminaire must be identifiable with those responsible for integration of the control gear.

The live supply is protected against failure of any unit with an internal 800mA non-replaceable
136mm fuse. The battery is protected with an internal 2A non-replaceable fuse.
148mm The control gear is suitable only for use with LED modules. Ensure correct polarity of the
power LED. Do not operate with the power LED disconnected.

21mm Commissioning

The permanent live supply should not be interrupted during the initial charge period.
Batteries Standard variants must be allowed to charge for 24 hours before rated duration can be
achieved.
NiCd variants continually charge batteries at their nominal rate.
DALI / AutoTest variants will begin an automatic commissioning process on initial power-up
NiMH variants apply pulse-charging after the commissioning period to prolong battery as outlined in the table below:
life and reduce energy consumption. During commissioning, the emergency function will be inhibited.

Permanent damage to the control gear may occur if battery polarity is reversed. LED Indication Stage / Period Status
Green 0.5Hz Flash 1 - 24h Initial Battery Charge
Batteries should be fixed securely to prevent damage to the luminaire or wiring during Green 0.5Hz Flash 2 - Rated Duration Duration Test
installation and operation. Green 0.5Hz Flash 3 - 24h Battery Recharge
Green with 10s pulse 4 – Normal Operation Commissioning Complete
Batteries must be replaced when the unit no longer meets its rated emergency LED Status Indicator
duration, or if a battery fault occurs. Contact Mackwell for a suitable replacement.
Standard variants – Single colour, green indicator LED.
Rechargeable NiMH or NiCd batteries are to be used. Please refer to the product label
or datasheet for battery compatibility. LED Indication Status
Green Steady On Normal, Standby Mode. Charging Battery.
Test Facilities Off Charging / Battery Fault, Power Off.

A test switch can be connected so that manual function tests can be performed DALI / AutoTest variants – Bicolour, red/green indicator LED
without disconnecting the live supply.
Switches require Normally Open contacts, rated for 30Vdc, 1A. LED Indication Status
Green with 10s pulse Normal, Commissioned, Standby Mode
DALI / AutoTest variants automatically test their function and performance in Green 0.5Hz Flash Commissioning or Duration Test In Progress
accordance with BS/EN 62034. Test schedules are set by the control gear to ensure Green 2Hz Flash Function Test In Progress
random testing of luminaires. As a consequence, tests may occur at any time and Green double pulse, 10s off. Rest Mode or Flat Battery
caution should be taken where this may be inconvenient, such as hotels or hospitals. Red 0.5Hz Flash Charging or Battery Fault
This may be alleviated by using DALI variants to adjust the test start times via DALI Red 2Hz Flash Lamp Fault
command. Off No Power & Battery Disconnected / Flat

A 30 second function test is performed automatically at 30-day intervals. This test can DALI Communications
be initiated manually at any time by switching the live supply Off/On twice, or pressing
the test switch if fitted, twice, within 5s. DALI variants allow two-wire communication between the units “DA” terminals and a Mackwell

operation.
Mackwell DALI control gears default to standalone AutoTest operation and scheduling when
not connected to an N-Light, or other suitable DALI system.
Wiring

Conductor Size
+ BATTERY 0.2mm2 to 0.5mm2 (20-24 AWG) solid or multi-strand wire.
- BATTERY
SWITCHED LIVE* Strip Length: 8.5 - 9.5mm
+ POWER LED
UNSWITCHED LIVE
- POWER LED Indicator LED
NEUTRAL
+ INDICATOR LED When used with a Mackwell bicolour indicator LED (All variants),
DALI* Red wire to “ + INDICATOR LED”,
- INDICATOR LED
DALI* Green wire to “- INDICATOR LED”.
TEST SWITCH*
TEST SWITCH* When used with a Mackwell standard indicator LED (Standard variants only),
Pink wire (LED anode) to “+INDICATOR LED”,
Notes Orange wire (LED cathode) to “- INDICATOR LED”.

Power LED, Battery, Indicator LED, and Test Switch terminals are classified as SELV.
The wiring to these should be kept separate from inputs, or double insulated in order to maintain SELV compliance.
Allowed time in rest mode: 15 days – 2.2Ah NiMH,15 days – 2Ah NiCD, 30 days – 4Ah NiMH
Low voltage leads should be separated from mains leads for good EMC performance. Maximum lead length for the Indicator LED and Test Switch is 1m.
To avoid damage to the control gear, all wiring must be protected against short circuit to earth, and appropriate grommets or cable glands should be used where necessary.

*SWITCHED LIVE Available on all product variants. Enables optional maintained operation. SWITCHED LIVE must be on the same phase as UNSWITCHED LIVE.
*DALI Available on DALI variants only. For use with compatible monitoring and control systems that support BS/EN 62386 part 202.
*TEST SWITCH Available on all product variants enabling connection of a low voltage test switch.
