Philippine Fashion in 2041: What is it like?

By: Maria Ela Amor B. Jurolan

Fashion is the representation of the self, and the way I represent myself is part of who I am. It is my way
of self-expression. It is also my way to show myself to the world. However, my fashion sense changes
over time because of so many factors like trends, social media, and influences from other people. Hence, I
started to wonder if what would be my lifestyle and fashion will be like for the next 20 years.

As a young Filipino and a fashion enthusiast, I have thought about the future of lifestyle and fashion here
in the Philippines. For the next 20 years, I imagined it to be considerably affected by many factors; First,
lifestyle and fashion in the Philippines will remain heavily influenced by western culture. Second, fashion
designs and styles will become cleaner and sleeker for the next 20 years. Third, technology-based clothes
will start to become a trend, and their accessibility will become easier. Lastly, old and recent lifestyle and
fashion in the Philippines might have their comeback.

Ever since America colonized us in 1898, our way of lifestyle and fashion drastically changed. Even until
now, their way of living is still affecting us through social media. Even for me, western lifestyle and
fashion are very relatable and universal. I made efforts to copy their sense of style, wore similar clothing,
and the way they live their life. Surprisingly, though, my fashion sense is still susceptible to change, just
like everyone else. It might be influenced by trends or by modernity. However, I see fashion ideas in the
future to become cleaner and sleeker. I believe that in the future, that these types of designs of clothes will
become prominent in the fashion industry. Thus, minimalist motifs and styles will make their
breakthrough. Speaking of breakthroughs in the fashion industry, I imagined technology playing a big
role in fashion. I imagined high-tech clothes capable of analyzing and detecting body temperature, blood
pressure, and heart rate. I believe this is possible because wearable technologies are becoming better and
better over the years. It will also be utilized in shopping and online boutiques making it more accessible
to the public with a wide range of audiences. Despite the technological advancements in fashion and
clothing, we cannot deny that some old fashion styles will return and become a trend again. I believe that
classic and old fashion ideas will become famous again, as I also think that fashion is fluid. Fashion styles
come and get trendy, and after such time they change but are reused again. Similar to the trendy haircut
nowadays called mullet. Mullet is a famous hairstyle back in the 1970s, and then it became famous again
during this quarantine. Fashion styles that also became trendy again were bell-bottom jeans, corduroy,
mom jeans, flared pants, chunky sneakers, high-waisted jeans, cargo pants, and denim.

Considering all these possible future of lifestyle and fashion in the Philippines, all I can say is fashion
really depends on the person no matter what era it is. Time does not necessarily affect fashion because it
is timeless and it has full of possibilities. It is also important to know that wearing and spending
expensive things for the sake of fashion is a beautiful and self-elevating thing, however, it is not
necessary to be part or belong to society. We have to bear in mind that wearing the clothes that makes us
comfortable and confident is what matters most.
