This module covers the knowledge, skills and attitude to identify influences of the 20th century
on fashion design, trends, styles and construction techniques. The unit applies to the analysis of
the most important impacts of economic, social, political and technological factors in the 20 th
and 21st century in fashion design and development.

UNIT ONE: IDENTIFYING THE FUNCTION OF CLOTHING
INTRODUCTION
Fashion in the narrow sense of the world means the changing form of clothing
. Fashion is not the only consideration in developing a garment for a market. The overall appearance (style) as well as the
utility value .
Fashion is a term that usually applies to a prevailing mode of expression, but quite often applies to a personal mode of
expression that may or may not apply to all. The term "fashion" is frequently used in a positive sense, as a synonym for
glamour and style.
FASHION IN CLOTHS
Fashion in clothes has allowed wearers to express emotion or solidarity with other people for millennium.
What a person chooses to wear can reflect that person's personality or likes. When people who have cultural status start to
wear new or different clothes a fashion trend may start. .
Fashions may vary significantly within a society according to age, social class, generation, occupation and geography as
well as over time. If, for example, an older person dresses according to the fashion of young people, he or she may look
ridiculous in the eyes of both young and older people.
CLASSIFICATION OF FASHION

Fashion is classified into many types, such as:

Style
Basic or classic
Fad
Fashion Forecasting
Trends
STYLE -
 is always constant.
 It does not change whereas fashion changes.
It is the modification of fashion.
 the fashion could be pleated skirt, yet the style is box pleat. It is a common fallacy to believe that the famous
designers create fashions..
BASICLASSICSC OR

When a fashion is constant or long lasting, it is called Basic or Classic. Basics or Classics are the outfits
which stays in the fashion scene for a long period of time that is from past to present and even in future
it stands.

1. FAD -- can be defined as short lived fashion, lasting for a very little time or period, acceptable by only a certain
group of people. For example, hippies – their clothing, accessories, hairstyles, etc. As Fad is short lived fashion,
it stays for a very short period, because they are very costly and every one cannot afford to buy it.

This is the important part of fashion scenario because when any new garment is designed by the designer and worn, it will not
create fashion by itself. It needs the media to spread fashion and this media which spread fashion and gets the fame and name
to the designers is Fashion Forecasting.

Fashion Forecasting is done through many communicating media, such as, cinema, fashion shows, press, magazines,
newspapers and window display.

TRENDS - Fashion trends are the styling ideas that major collections have in common. They indicate the direction in
which fashion is moving. Fashion forecasters look for the styles they think are prophetic, ideas that capture the mood of the
times and signal a new fashion trend.
FASHION LIFE CYCLE
In the world of luxury fashion, everything boils down to the fashion cycle.
The way of fashion change is described as fashion cycle.
Generally, fashion cycle is used to explain the process that a type of fashion goes throughIt is the
amount of time which takes a fashion trend to emerge, peak and fall out of style
Fashion Cycle Stages:
Fashion moves through different stages during its cycles of existence. Fashion acceptance is generally
called as a fashion cycle. The fashion cycle is usually represented as a bell-shaped curve with 5 stages.

3. Peak of popularity
4. Decline in popularity
5. Rejection

1. Introduction stage:
Every fashion designer has each season works on a new collection, interpret their research into
apparel
2. Increase in Popularity:
If new styles are seen worn by celebrities or famous personality on TV or magazines it may
attract the attention of buyers, the press, and the public.
3. Peak of Popularity:
Fashion at this stage is most popular, it may be in such demand that many garment
manufacturers copy it or produce adaptations of it at many price levels.
4. Decline in Popularity:
In this stage, consumer demand is decreasing, going down the slope. Many copies are mass
produced that fashion as a result consumer get tired of the style and begin to look for new styles
5. Rejection of a Style or Obsolescence:
It is the last stage of fashion cycle. Consumers are no longer interested in the fashion .
FASHION CYCLE LENGTHS
Fashion Cycles have no specific lengths. But we can give
specific cycle name with type of acceptance.
Flop Cycle- No acceptance
Fad Cycle- Short acceptance
Normal Cycle- Medium acceptance
Ford Cycle- Strong acceptance

Typically, clothing is made of fabrics or textiles, but over time


it has included garments made from animal skin and other thin
sheets of materials and natural products found in the
environment, put together.
The wearing of clothing is mostly restricted to human beings
and is a feature of all human societies. The amount and type of
clothing worn depends on gender, body type, social factors,
and geographic considerations
BASIC FUNCTIONS OF CLOTHING
 Protection
it provides protection from heat cold, wind, and rain. We all know extreme weathers can affect
our skin and body.
 Identification
Identification identifies you by wearing the a unique kind of clothing that no other individual person could wear at
the same time as you. Identification is where a unique style of clothing is identified by you, the individual .
 Status
Status is where a relative social, professional and/or other standing someone or something.
It is where they are put in a rank from the upper class, middle class and lower class.
 Professional
Professional is the same thing as status. A white collar represents the upper class which the careers for this are Nurses, Doctors,
Lawyers and others. While blue collar and red collars are often the Policeman and Firefighters.

IDENTIFYING INFLUENTIAL FACTORS OF FASHION CHANGES IN CLOTHING

Fashion, by nature, is a dynamic and transient culture, which keeps changing in time and space
many other causes that influence fashion.
1. Psychological Factor it expresses individuality and does not get influenced by society.
2. Social Factor its area is pretty wide and includes many factors, such as place of living (urban area or rural
area), educational and cultural background, status in society, gender, profession, and, occasions.
3. Economic Factor Fashion reflects the availability of raw materials, level of infrastructure, and
technological advancement in a particular country.
4. Cultural Factor fashion influences culture, but rather culture also influences fashion vice-versa
5. Political Factor Time to time, government keep changing the law, economic policies, and political policies,
all these factors, collectively influence fashion.
6. Environmental Factor largely includes seasons, like the winter season, which have entirely different
clothing styles, influences fashion; the summer season,

It includes age, skin color, body structure, height of the person, etc.

Generally, garments intended for fashion apparel will have to fulfil the following
characteristics: durability, strength, colour fastness, and aesthetics. These properties are
mandatory for everyday use and maintenance for fashion apparel.
