BY MELISSA CLULOW
Turtle Dove II is nearly identical to the original Turtle Dove sweater except
that it is knit at a tighter gauge. It is a loose, raglan-style sweater with a
turtleneck and a modern silhouette. Knit from the top-down with optional
short-rows to raise the back of the neck slightly, the entire sweater is knit
in the round so there is no seaming at all. There are two options for
finishing the body - a simple rolled hem or a twisted rib split-hem. Turtle
Dove II is knit with Drops AIR and, like the original, it is light and warm and
incredibly soft!

TOOLS
For neck, cuff, and split-hem ribbing:
12", 16”, and 24" circular needles: 4.5 mm (US 7) – or two sizes smaller than gauge
needle. Alternatively, use 32" or 40" circular needles and employ the magic loop method
for neck and cuffs and then flat for the hem ribbing.
For yoke, body, and sleeves:
16”, 24”, and 40” circular needle: 5.5 mm (US 9) – or size needed to obtain gauge
Stitch marker to indicate beginning of round
Two stitch holders or waste yarn for placing sleeve stitches on hold
Tapestry needle to weave in ends
GAUGE
16 sts and approx 24 rnds = 10 cm / 4” after blocking with main gauge needles
SIZES
1 (2, 3, 4) (5, 6, 7, 8)
Finished circumference:
45.5 (49.5, 52.5, 56.5) (60.5, 63.5, 66.5, 69.5)"
115.5 (125.5, 133.5, 143.5) (153.5, 161.5, 169, 176.5) cm
Measurements above are given for the finished circumference measured at the end of
the raglan increases (i.e. at underarms). This sweater is designed to be worn with 14 -18” /
35.5 - 45.75 cm of positive ease; however, this is just a guide. Some people prefer a closer
fit; do not be afraid to select an option that provides somewhat less than the suggested
ease according to your own preferences.
With smaller 16" needles cast on 60 (64, 68, 68) (72, 72, 80, 80) sts. Join in the round
being careful not to twist your sts. Place marker for beginning of round.
Marker setup row: k5 (7, 9, 9) (11, 11, 13, 13), PM, k25 (25, 25, 25) (25, 25, 27, 27),
PM, k5 (7, 9, 9) (11, 11, 13, 13), PM, k25 (25, 25, 25) (25, 25, 27, 27)
These markers indicate divisions between right sleeve, front, left sleeve, and back sections.
Note: Short-row shaping will raise the back neck slightly. We recommend the German
Short Row method – you can find a great tutorial by VeryPink Knits on YouTube here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52qy8OOb-s0
Knit across right sleeve, front, and left sleeve and then begin short-row shaping on
back. Knit across back to 4 sts before marker, turn, purl to 4 sts before marker, turn,
knit to 2 sts before marker, turn, purl to 2 sts before marker, turn. Knit to BOR (note
that turn sts look like two sts because of the German Short Row method but are
worked / counted as 1).
Knit 1 round.
Round 1: [kfb, knit to 2 sts before raglan marker, kfb, k1] 4 times – 8 sts inc
Round 2: Knit (no increases)
Round 3: [Knit across sleeve stitches, SM, kfb, knit to 2 sts before raglan marker, kfb,
k1] twice – 4 sts inc
Round 4: Knit (no increases)
Work rounds 1-4 a total of 16 (18, 19, 21) (23, 25, 26, 27) times
You should now have 37 (43, 47, 51) (57, 61, 65, 67) sts for sleeves, 89 (97, 103, 111)
(119, 125, 131, 137) sts for front / back each.
Removing markers as you come to them, put 37 (43, 47, 51) (57, 61, 65, 67) sleeve sts
onto stitch holder or waste yarn, CO 1 st using the backwards loop method, PM for
new BOR, CO 1 more st, knit to next marker, put 37 (43, 47, 51) (57, 61, 65, 67) sleeve
sts on to stitch holder or waste yarn, CO 1 st, PM for side, CO 1 st, knit to end – 182
(198, 210, 226) (242, 254, 266, 278) sts.

Put next 91 (99, 105, 113) (121, 127, 133, 139) back sts on a stitch holder or waste yarn -
they will be worked later. Turn and work flat across front as follows.

these stitches, pick up and knit 2 sts from body at underarm, place marker to indicate
BOR, pick up and knit 1 more st from body at underarm. Join for working in the round.
Knit until sleeve measures 6” from underarm – if you would like longer sleeves, add
