Bass Lesson 1(Introduction and GMaj Scale)

The main parts of the bass are :

The strings are tuned lowest to highest in pitch E,A,D,G with the lowest string
(E) being the string closest to you (the top string).

Basic technique:
1. Keep you elbows in towards your body
2. Rest the thumb of your right hand on the pickup
3. Stretch your left hand fingers out so each finger is on a fret. (this can be
tough especially for your ring and little finger)
4. Keep your left hand roughly at 90 degrees to the neck of the bass and make
sure your wrist is bent (naturally you will not want to bend your wrist)

BASS LESSON 1 - Introduction Page 1 of 10

LEFT HAND POSITION

WRONG - no wrist bend

RIGHT - wrist bent

The main reason for bending the wrist is so that your fingers can stretch better.
The example above might be a little extreme and in reality you might move
from a bent position to a flat position - overall however the bent wrist gives you
the easiest way to stretch your fingers and ultimately play without having to
look at the fretboard. Notice how in the second picture the player can reach 4
frets at a time !.

NOTE. Use the finger pads NOT the finger tips when playing.

RIGHT HAND POSITION

Place your thumb on the pickup ,
then alternate index and pointer fingers

5 semi-tones higher than the previous one)

Each fret represents a semi-tone (Actually the distance between each fret)
