Topic: Oral health and hygiene: Why does our mouth matter?

Oral health is the state of the mouth, teeth, and orofacial structures that enable individuals to
perform essential functions such as eating, breathing, and speaking, and encompasses
psychosocial dimensions such as self-confidence, well-being, and the ability to socialize and
work without pain, discomfort, and embarrassment. Oral health varies over the life span from
early life to old age, is integral to general health, and supports individuals in participating in
society and achieving their potential.

While oral health and hygiene have similar meanings, Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping
one's oral cavity clean and free of disease and other problems by regular brushing of the teeth
and adopting good hygiene habits. Oral hygiene must be carried out regularly to enable the
prevention of dental disease and bad breath. Oral hygiene also refers to the practices and
habits that help maintain the health and cleanliness of your mouth, including your teeth, gums,
and tongue. Proper oral hygiene is essential for preventing dental problems, maintaining fresh
breath, and contributing to overall health.

Oral health and hygiene play a crucial role in our overall well-being. It is not just about having a
beautiful smile; it directly impacts our physical health as well. A healthy mouth can prevent
various systemic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. By prioritizing oral health, we can
improve our overall quality of life. Poor oral health has been linked to an increased risk of
cardiovascular diseases, respiratory infections, and some types of cancers. Taking care of your
mouth is vital for total health.

Oral diseases disproportionately affect the most vulnerable and disadvantaged populations.
People of low socioeconomic status carry a higher burden of oral diseases and this association
remains across the life course, from early childhood to older age, regardless of the country's
overall income level. Some common oral health and hygiene issues include tooth decay, or
dental caries, which is the most common oral health issue. It occurs when plaque bacteria
produce acids that erode tooth enamel, leading to cavities. Cavities are permanently damaged
areas in the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. Cavities are
also caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria in your mouth, frequent snacking,
sipping sugary drinks and not cleaning your teeth well.

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be caused by poor oral hygiene, dental infections, or
underlying medical conditions. Bad breath can be embarrassing and, in some cases, may even
cause anxiety. It's no wonder that stores are overflowing with gum, mints, mouthwashes, and
other products designed to fight bad breath. But many of these products are only temporary
measures because they don't address the cause of the problem. Certain foods, health
conditions, and habits are among the causes of bad breath. In many cases, you can improve bad
breath with consistent proper dental hygiene.
Some factors contributing to poor oral health and hygiene are poor oral hygiene practices
where regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing can increase the risk of oral health problems,
including tooth decay and gum diseases. Another example is unhealthy diets and nutrition
because a diet high in sugary foods and drinks can accelerate tooth decay, while a lack of
essential nutrients can weaken the teeth and gums E.g., Scurvy occurs when there is a lack of
vitamin C (ascorbic acid). The deficiency leads to symptoms of weakness, anemia, gum disease,
and skin problems. People who don't include enough fruits and vegetables in their diet are at
risk. Smoking and tobacco products, including cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, significantly
contribute to oral health problems, such as gum disease, stained teeth, and oral cancer.

There are many benefits of good oral health and hygiene such as the prevention of dental
issues where proper oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing, flossing, and using
mouthwash, help prevent common dental problems like cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.
Neglecting oral hygiene can lead to painful and costly dental issues. Gum health is another
important advantage of good oral health and hygiene whereby good oral hygiene can help
prevent gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis), which, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss
and even systemic health problems. Oral health improves the confidence and social well-being
of an individual where a healthy mouth and bright smile contribute to self-confidence, allowing
you to freely interact in social and professional settings without worrying about bad breath or
stained teeth.

A few ways you can improve your oral health are through regular brushing and flossing. Brush
at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste, and don't forget to floss daily. This removes
plaque and bacteria, promoting oral health. Using mouthwashes or dental rinses can help
eliminate bacteria and freshen your breath. It is an excellent addition to regular brushing and
flossing. Regular dental check-ups for professional cleanings and comprehensive oral
examinations are very important. A check-up allows your dentist to see if you have any dental
problems and helps you keep your mouth healthy. Leaving problems untreated could
make them more difficult to treat in the future, so it's best to deal with problems early, or, if
possible, prevent them altogether.

By recognizing the importance of oral health and adopting good oral hygiene practices, we can
prevent oral diseases, maintain healthy teeth and gums, and boost our overall self-confidence
and well-being. Prioritize your oral health today and take the necessary steps to achieve better
oral hygiene. Overall, oral health and hygiene are not only important for your teeth and gums
but also for your general health and well-being. Practicing good oral hygiene habits, along with
regular dental check-ups, can help you maintain a healthy mouth and contribute to your overall
health and quality of life.
