MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
Hello and welcome to all of you to this Jovian lecture. It’s a favorite subject of
mine. In so many ways it is something that I know so deeply, and the
mechanics of Human Design have been enormously beneficial in making it
easy to live with one’s own chemistry. I think the theme of today, if nothing
else, is to understand that these bio-forms, based on their design, generate,
manifest, whatever the case may be, with specific chemistries. Human beings
who are not-self, the homogenized human being, is always busy making up a
reason for phenomena. It’s what the not-self does.
When the not-self is low in its emotional wave, it makes up a reason. It says that
it’s there because of this or that, or at least that’s what its mind starts
pondering. If it’s at the high end of its wave emotionally it will make up a reason
for that. “I’m happy because; because of you, because of it, because of the other
thing.”
Human beings constantly are making up reasons for what is in fact simply
chemistry. To be an emotional being is to understand that you have an
emotional chemistry. This is what the chemistry does. Chemistry gives you the
sensation of going up and down. But there is no reason in that other than it’s
a chemistry, which is why I teach mechanics. It’s just a chemistry. If you want
to drive yourself crazy, then make up a reason for why you’re up and down all
the time. It’s precisely what you’re going to do because it’s just a chemistry;
that’s what it is. It isn’t because of it. It’s your nature.
And the same thing is true for melancholy, for sadness. It’s about chemistry. In
this graph, what you’re looking at is all of the Gates and Channels that have
Individuality as their keynote nature. In other words, this is part of three
different Individual Circuitry that’s there in the BodyGraph. That is, the main

So we have a minor Individual Circuit, we have a major circuit, and we have the
integration Channels. And you can see that they integrate with every single
Center, which is not so for all of the other circuit groups that you have in
Human Design. Individuality is present in all of these various areas. What that
says, first of all, is how many human beings have an aspect of Individuality in
their design. Obviously, you’re going to have human beings statistically that
are not going to have Individuality in an Individual Gate or a Channel in Human
Design. But an enormous number of human begins do for obvious reasons, as
there are so many of them. They’re all over the place.
But like what I described in terms of the nature of the emotional system, the
thing to grasp about Individuality is that it comes with a specific chemistry, and
that chemistry is very important to understand. It is our theme today, after all.
It is a chemistry that we describe historically as melancholy, as sadness. Anyone
who carries any Individuality in their design, it doesn’t matter where it is or how
much of it they have, they’re carrying the chemistry of melancholy.
As you can see from the titling of this lecture, Melancholy and Creativity, they
are one and the same thing. They are both byproducts of the chemistry of
being Individual. This goes back to where I began, with human beings and

The way in which the not-self mind operates is that it’s immediately going to
jump on that sadness in order to be able to support or not some decision or
not that it’s going to make mentally. It’s going to make up a reason. It’s going
to say, I woke up sad because, because of this, because of that, because of the
other thing.
The moment that you do that to yourself and the moment that your mind
jumps on that, what you get is a decision-making process that says, “I’m going
to fix the sadness,” or “I’m going to indulge in the sadness, because,” and it goes
on and on. So you end up taking uppers to make you feel good and you end
up drinking too much and you end up doing all kinds of things because there
are all kinds of reactions to the assumption that there is a reason that your
sadness never goes away. And it never goes away.
It’s an imprint that carries a chemistry. There’s nothing you’re going to be able
to do. You’re not going to be able to escape it, other than death. It’s just there.
And you’re not going to be able to fix it, because there’s nothing to fix. It’s like
saying you’re going to fix the emotional system. There’s nothing to fix. It’s just
the way that it works. It works in waves, up and down. It’s the way it goes.
But the moment you attach a reason to it, the moment you attach a reason to
your sadness, boy do you put yourself in a bad space in this life. And you’re
going to make decisions that are detrimental to you because they’re decisions
that are based on something that are simply not true and are made up; you
made up a reason.
No matter what you get from this particular lecture today, the most important
thing to learn is that we are not here to make up reasons for chemistry.
Otherwise, we’re never going to be able to take advantage of the beauty that
it offers. The emotional being that has the patience to go through their wave
before they make a decision has a rich and deep collection to work from. It’s
very profound the way in which that works, to take advantage of the chemistry
in order to be able to get all the different perspectives before one can be clear.

MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
It’s the same thing with Individuality. The moment that you stop placing a
reason on sadness is the moment you can transform it into the muse. It’s the
moment that you open up the possibility for the creative potential that’s there
in that particular Gate or Channel or configuration to emerge. And it’s just the
same chemistry.
The great battle in Human Design is with the mind. And it’s an obvious battle
because it’s the way in which we perceive our existence, so it has great
influence over the way we take in phenomena of any kind. From the moment
you come into this life, you’re trained that your mind is in control of what is
your life. And it’s only until you can step away from your mind making decisions
for you that you’re going to be able to really gain the benefits of what it is to be
Individual in any way or anything else, for that matter.
The thing to grasp about mind is that it doesn’t know which is better in any
“this and that.” It just collects data. It collects information and it guesses. It’s
what it does. It’s always guessing, and it always has a backup, because that’s
the way mind works. “Oh, that didn’t work. Oh well, okay, let’s try this.” It
doesn’t know. It can’t.
So, the moment that you let your mind feed on your sadness, it’s going to feed
on your sadness, it’s going to feed on the openness in your design, and your
not-self mind is going to take off from there. And you don’t get what’s there for
you. You don’t get to live out the magic that is there, because creativity is
something that is so important to what it is for us to be humans.
When you look at the combination here of the 1st and 2nd Gates, you’re looking
at the extremes in the configuration of the wheel itself: the all-yang 1 and the
all-yin 2. This is about direction. It’s about direction for life itself. And the
direction of life itself is creative. In truth it’s re-creative, but that’s another story.
But the way it appears to be is that we are a deeply creative force with a deeply
creative direction.

Oh yes, there are pockets of everything else, but they are seven billion of us.
There is a huge proportion of humanity in which this sadness that becomes
this reason leads to all kinds of things, leads to horrors on this plane. It’s what
happens when you don’t know how things work and you identify with them,
and you turn them into something else.

MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
like me who has only a very complex Individual definition, something that I
recognize about the beauty of the life experience is that any and all things can
be creative, that one can live a creative life, be a creative being.
It doesn’t mean that what you’re doing has any kind of exalted frame to it. I
take great pleasure out of very, very mundane things, because very mundane
things can be done in a way that is truly creative. That is, that it brings peace,
satisfaction, success, surprise, or whatever the case may be.
Something to grasp about all of these creative Gates is that it says we have a
whole cupboard full of imprinted genes that are here for nothing else but the
creative potential. And remember something about creative circuitry. It
operates in the pulse: it’s there and it’s not; it’s there and it’s not, and suddenly
it’s there. The thing to always understand about the creative process, or to
understand melancholy, is that it’s there and it’s not; it’s there and it’s not. It is
always in the pulse.
So, it’s not about being able to push the river. There is no pushing the river here.
You have to be surrendered to what is correct. When you’re surrendered to
what is correct, these Gates of Individuality will transform in the way in which
they come out in the world. In other words, they will show their creativity. They
will bring their creativity.
You can’t get rid of sadness, and you don’t want to. Again, for someone like me
who is all Individual, I like sadness, because sadness without a reason is kind of
warm and fuzzy. You feel that it’s exactly the right chemistry for letting go into
fulfilling your creative potential, whatever that may be in that particular
moment. It’s just there. Sadness without a reason is an incredible thing. It’s just
a chemistry then. And it doesn’t carry all of the values that the word “sadness”
carries. It’s the thing that feels like sadness, but it isn’t because there’s no
reason. It’s just another state.

potential happens to be, because that’s what it does, because it is the muse. It
is calling you to live out your process with a different frequency, the frequency
that comes out of this specific chemistry.
The moment that you’re looking at any circuitry that is rooted in the Sacral
Center you’re looking at one of the main forces in life itself. So, looking at the
Tribal Circuitry, you will see that the Sacral Center plays an enormous part in
that. In other words, what is generated on this plane is the community of
beings.
But what you’re looking at here is something else. You’re looking at something
that is so essential as a creative aspect for the Individual, and that is to be
centered in their life. This circuit carries two Channels. It carries the Channel of
Initiation and the Channel of following one’s convictions. So, to be initiated into
following the convictions of your creative life is what it’s really expressing. In
other words, this is one of the most important groundings that we have.
Mystically, there is something curious about this circuit. I was told that if you
had a connection between the Sacral Center and the Heart Center, if there was
a Channel that was actually there, the biological system would not decay. In
other words, death certainly as we know it wouldn’t exist. It’s just an interesting
thing to understand about the power that’s there in the relationship between
© J O VIA N A R CH I VE ME D IA 7 J OVIA N A RC H I VE . CO M
MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
the Sacral Center and the Heart Center and the way in which it operates here
in this circuit.
What we’re talking about is how important the creative life is to centering
humanity. Think about it. Since we became nine centered beings, the creative
impulse has incredibly increased the ability for so many human beings to find
ways to survive in this world; all of the new things that came into the world
come via Individuality. So, you’re getting all of these new technologies, all of
these things that are providing for a way in which the creative life is generating
the foundation for everyone’s creative process.
And it says that we’re here to be centered in the creative process, that without
that creative drive our societies, our cultures would fail. And we’ve seen that on
all kinds of levels. You see that in dictatorial régimes where they try to control
the creative output and you get this destruction of the communal
consciousness that gets reduced to the lowest common denominator and
there is no challenge.
One of the things that we see out of the creative impulse is this challenge that’s
there to maintain this direction of being creative, and being creative requires
freedom. I don’t mean to sound political, because I don’t mean it in that
context, but obviously it translates into that context. Individuality is about
being different. And it is Individuals and their creativity that gets most
threatened in certain societies. There are all kinds of Individual creative beings
who are on this plane right now who are suffering dearly from being different
and are being forced by the conditioning to conform as much as possible.

MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
So, creativity is also something that is there to center us into our process, not
to look for the creativity to be given by the other, but to experience the
creativity ourselves, how important that is for us. And the creativity breaks
down into many layers, to use your power creatively. Using your power
creatively isn’t a mental decision, it’s the byproduct of Strategy and Authority
and then you’ll see that power used in a creative way. In the same way that it
connects to behavior, that your behavior is creative. That takes awareness. It
takes awareness to navigate on this plane and navigate in a way that allows
you to follow your convictions.
It also changes, as I said, the relationship to this chemistry that we’ve been
interpreting as sadness and interpreting sadness as a negative because of the
associations that you attach to it. But it’s not. And of course, you end up with
the dilemma of the other. There’s always the dilemma of the other. If you carry
Individuality and you happen to wake up in the morning and you’re sad, it’s
reflected in your chemistry. It’s reflected in your aura. It’s what you are.
Now, you may not be putting a reason on it. For you it’s just a chemistry. But
you open the door to your room, you step out and there is your friend, partner,
child, whatever the case may be, and they take one look at you, they will say to

MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
you, “What’s the matter?” because they’re feeling the chemistry and are taking
it into their aura.
Of course, the only way they know how to respond is based on their
conditioning, “What is the matter with you? There’s something wrong with
you.” So you answer them, “Nothing.” They don’t take “nothing” for an answer.
“Come on, is it this, is it that, is it the other thing? Are you mad at me? What
did I do?” It goes on and on and on and on. And the more you protest it’s
nothing…
You have to deal with the other in this life. It’s chemistry; that’s all. And it’s a
chemistry that the other better get used to it and get used to it without
projection. If you live with an emotional person and you’re unemotional, you
get it. You’ve got to live with their chemistry. You can’t change it, any more
than somebody can change Individual chemistry.
And they can’t make you happy. They’re never going to be able to make you
happy. It’s not what your existence is about. If you’ve got Individual definition
and you think your existence is about happy, it isn’t about happy. Look to your
Type and your Signature. That will tell you what it’s about. But it’s not about
happy because happy doesn’t automatically equate to good, and sad doesn’t
automatically equate to bad. It doesn’t work that way.
You’re there to experience the form being creative, to recognize it, to be aware
of it, to enjoy it, to take pleasure from it, to be entertained by it. That’s what
we’re here for. It’s the form that has to be allowed to be creative. The only way
© J O VIA N A R CH I VE ME D IA 10 J OVIA N A RC H I VE . CO M
MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
that the form can be creative is release it from the thrall of the mind. There isn’t
any other way.
Integration

MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
the 59/6, these direction connects that are there. And in understanding this
20/34 and its power that is the release of power in the now.
Now, all of this is about having a pure creative life. This is the backbone of this
pure creative life. And it’s generated, which means that the key to our survival
is response. It is the key to our survival. The most creative thing we can do as a
Generator is to be alert. This is our primary function. That is the archetype, the
power to be alert, this power to be aware, this power to be aware in the now.
And out of that comes the potential of awakening. You awaken as you respond.
And the creatively emerges as you respond.
Individuality Is Generated
When you look at all these three circuits combined into the one graph, there is
one thing that dominates—Individuality is generated. That’s what it’s all about;
it’s generated. Creativity is something that is part of the basic life force of the
planet. And the only reason that we do not see this vast display of creative life
is homogenization that robs us of the purity of those processes because
conditioning is so easy for the not-self when it begins to attach to chemistry.
And that’s one of the oldest traps that we have; the mind identifying with
something and turning it into a cause and turning that cause into a false action
that leads to the dilemmas that come with that.
The beauty of integration is the guarantee that we are all here to have creative
survival. It’s what we’re designed for. It’s why in other courses with other
subjects I always refer to the fact that the nine-centered being is not here to
toil in the fields of materialism. They’re not. They don’t and do not have to be
concentrated on their survival. They do not. It’s the first thing that happens to
you when you move away from your mind making the decisions and you allow
your form to make those decisions. That’s the moment that you remove all of
those threats that are there to you on the material plane and you can focus on
what you’re here for, which is awareness.
The moment that your mind isn’t making the decision, it doesn’t mean it is
silent. It’s not silent. It’s going to babble and babble depending on the way in
which it’s configured. But the moment that it’s not allowed to make decisions

MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
you can see through the veil. As long as the mind is concerned with making
decisions, you do not see, you cannot. Like a horse with blinders on, focused on
what the not-self purpose lays out for you. You don’t see it. But the moment
that your mind isn’t making decisions is the moment that you being to
experience your process.
Again, as long as you’re not attaching any reason to it, it’s no longer going to
be a burden on you. It’s not. It’s not going to be that burden that always leads
to “why me.” It’s not about “why me; why can’t I be happy?” all that stuff. It’s all
just made up. It’s all been created over and over and over again by the not-self,
distorted, and distorted to the point that allopathic medicine wants to find a
cure for. Do you know how many human beings in the United States of
America are using personality enhancement drugs to make them feel better,
help them get through the day, because they think their sadness is a reason
and they can’t handle it.
The 20/57
You have the major circuit, and as I indicated at the beginning, the major
circuit is all about our creative direction in this life, where we are going, in that
sense. You can see the presence of the 20/57 again. Here the 20/57 is all about

The 28/38
Most people think of the Channel 28/38 (see image above) as a pain in the
behind, this constant struggle of where are my keys and all that kind of stuff.
But this is our higher creative purpose. There is nothing more elegant than the
journey to transformation. You enter into your Strategy and Authority; it’s
going to take you seven years—it’s the body, after all, it’s cellular—to truly
decondition.
That seven year journey, ask anyone who’s been through it, is an incredible
thing. This is the Channel of struggle. It is the journey towards purpose. And
the creative purpose is something that is only there when you’re operating
correctly, when you’re operating correctly out of your Strategy and Authority.
The 12/22
On the emotional side it’s interesting because the emotional side gives us so
much of what we think of when we think of creativity, the 12/22 and its
relationship to poetry and to music and all kinds of things, because this
Channel is about love and passion. It is about the embrace of a stranger. It’s
where our deepest romance stories come from, the love at first sight; all of this
stuff.

Transformation takes place one person at a time. When that person is on that
fractal, that’s what happens to them. There’s this deep, deep creative potential
in us to reach out to the other and transform them, so that creativity is
something that can go beyond just being a spark of light, but that can become
something that ultimately reaches out to the whole collective, tribal
configuration.
So, here we’re witnessing the deepest creative process that we have in
Individuality right now, and all of that being provoked creatively by the 39th

Surrender
It is what this is all about in the end. It’s about letting go. It’s about surrender.
From the moment that I had any access to spiritual, mystical information of
any kind, one of those words that I saw over and over again was the word
“surrender.” I read a lot of explanations of that word without any mechanics.
There were never any mechanics; there were a lot of concepts.
Human beings are conditioned to want to be what they’re not. It’s time to be
who you are. And it begins with being able to not simply accept at the
intellectual level, because that’s just another mental aspect, it’s about seeing
for yourself what happens to you when your life is no longer determined by the
way in which your mind formulates things. This is an incredible thing.
Then it opens up the doorway for these aspects to begin to emerge in your life
in the way in which they were intended to emerge. This is what we’re here for.
We’re not here to interfere with that process. We’re not here to distort it. We’re
here to benefit from it, to watch it, to experience it. And it all begins with
eliminating the identification with chemistry. It seems so simple, doesn’t it? It
is, after all.

MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
I know that for myself. It is a natural thing for me to be sad. But as I said, it
doesn’t have a reason. My mind would like to make up all kinds of reasons why
I feel this chemistry, but it has nothing to do with it. It’s just a chemistry. It’s a
thing, after all. If you don’t attach any weight to it, it doesn’t mean anything
other than the difference between a cold day and a hot day; I don’t know. It’s
just another physicality of life. It isn’t a reason.
I would have destroyed myself with—I remember what that was like as not-
self. Sadness was an excuse for me. I’d get sad, I’d blame somebody or
something, and then look ridiculous how it is, look for something to
compensate for that, as if somehow I was going to eliminate the sadness, in
the illusion that I could find something that could take it away. It was very
disillusioning as a not-self being that I couldn’t get rid of it. That I would go
from this thing or that thing, or one relationship to another and it just would
never go away. It’s just something that’s there and your not-self is always
making up the reasons.
There is nothing that has been more powerful for me than understanding
chemistry, both as an Individual and somebody with an open, undefined Solar
Plexus Center. I’ve learned to see so clearly that the interpretation of chemistry
is what’s so destructive. It’s what denies people so much of the beauty of what
their life is. 51% of humanity is emotional. Then you take all the aspects in
humanity that are Individual, and you’ve got a lot of human beings on this
planet that constantly are making up reasons for their chemistry and acting
on it. That’s the scary part.
You wake up in the morning to a neutral chemistry and you blame your partner
for it, or your colleagues or your friends, your dog, whatever it is. It’s what
human beings do almost all the time. To understand melancholy and creativity
is to live it. That’s what it is, it’s to live it. And then you’ll reassess your own grasp
of what creativity is. You’re here to have a creative life. But you’re here to be the
witness of your creative life. You don’t have to control what that is. What you
need to do is experience it for what it is.

MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
focused. It’s being focused into those imprints that are you, not the openness
that is there in your design. And you can bring yourself a lot of solace by simply
recognizing the truth that when you do wake up in the morning and you do
feel that frequency that you know as sadness and that you can really just lay it
aside, lay the reasons aside, keep the chemistry.
But you need to work that chemistry. One aspect is understanding there's no
reason for it, but it’s there. It’s there to be lived. And if you’re correct in the way
in which you’re operating then you’re going to see that flow, that frequency,
the way you do things in the embrace of that frequency that brings out those
so-called creative results. It’s enriching your life. It’s keeping you evolving,
instead of having you stuck. It’s moving you forward.
And it doesn’t matter whether you’re an Individual or you’re emotional or
you’re both, it’s about seeing that this is the most important concept for your
mind to grasp. It’s like anything else. Experiment with it. See the truth of it. You
already know the truth of it deep inside. You do because it is your truth. It’s just
a thing. There is no need to make any kind of attachment; none whatsoever. It
will set you free.
The mind is such a burden for most human beings. Its questions, its way of
framing things, its seductions, its fears, the anxiety, all of those things that
mind plays with. Oh, take away the reason and you really change your
consciousness. And then you can begin to see that as a being who is here to
fulfill your purpose, your cross on this plane that you have this creative
underlying force that is there. And it’s not there all the time. Remember, it’s a
pulse. It’s there and it’s not.
Trusting Yourself
It’s there when it’s there and it will make a difference to anything that you’re
experiencing. And you get there by trusting in yourself. The moment that
anybody can give up attaching reasons to chemistry is the moment that you
really begin the journey of an aware being on this plane. It is such a beautiful
thing to be aware. You do not have unnecessary pain.
Think about all the pain generated by the identification with chemistry. There
is so much psychological pain. It’s almost unbearable to even imagine it how
much there really is. All this blame, all this fault, all this shame, all of these
© J O VIA N A R CH I VE ME D IA 18 J OVIA N A RC H I VE . CO M
MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
things that come with it. And it’s just chemistry. If you take away the reason,
you’ll see that it all disappears. It does.
It becomes a joke. That’s my black sense of humor, but I enjoy that. I enjoy living
my sadness and knowing that because there is no reason, it’s not sadness. I
only use that word because it’s what we associate with that chemistry. But for
me, it’s not sadness. For me it’s a physical state. It’s like a drug in your body. It’s
just something different. And it’s something that is very natural. So, it’s just
what it is. And you watch what happens through that particular frame.
Awareness
I would never want to get rid of it. I would never want to trade it in for happy or
whatever the not-self mind would think would be a valuable replacement,
because it’s perfect. It’s what happens to us when we’re aware. This whole
finger-pointing in life to ourselves, to others, disappears. Things are what they
are. It’s not about changing them. It’s about being aware of them. It’s not about
changing us. It’s about awareness. This is what we’re here for. We are here to
be cognitive beings. We are here to express the incredible potential of the
machinery we’ve been given, the brain system and all of these things. We’re
amazing creatures.
All of that gets lost under this intense cloud of the not-self Personality and all
of its woes and all of its needs and all of its fears and all of those things. You can
strip clean through that. At the physical level you follow that Strategy and
Authority. It will make decisions for you as you. And psychologically you let go.
You let go because you know. You let go because you get it, that it doesn’t
mean anything other than pain to bring some kind of reason to what is just
simply a natural, physical phenomena.
And then we can begin to experience a creative life and a creative world and
creative interchange, all of the things that are there in the circuitry, that
creative direction that belongs to all of us so that we get beyond the stasis, that
we open up the possibilities of what each unique being is here to fulfill, that we
are grounded on our creativity, that this is what we’re all about.

MELANCHOLY AND CREATIVITY | RA URU HU
For me, the most creative thing of all is to be a unique being. This is the
ultimate expression of creative because there’s nothing like it. It’s magnificent,
a differentiated being with their absolutely unique experience and unique
tools for transforming that experience into outer authority, the richness that
the true mind is here to bring. We’re here to commune at the awareness level.
We’re here to live in a creative Maia. And there is only one thing that gets in the
way: making up reasons for chemistry. It’s the only thing that gets in the way.
It’s such an incredible thing to think about. It’s so simple when you understand.
And yet to see this is what distorts life on this plane, deeply. So, follow your
Strategy and Authority. Allow surrender to come into your life because that’s
what it does. And show your mind; it needs to see it, its delusion with making
up reasons, because the moment that you begin to operate correctly your
creativity is there, and it’s special, and it’s only possible because of that thing
that we call sadness.
All right, I hope all of you enjoyed that. It’s nice to share it with you and don’t
make up reasons for chemistry. Until next time, or whenever we meet again,
all of you take care, bye for now.
