What do you need to know
before you start?
There are some basic skils you need to know before you start.
This might be an overload of information. So to really start you have to read
point 1 to 4, the rest will come later.. You can also choose to start at the front and
keep going back to this list to read the points. It’s about the following skills:
1. Cast on stitches
You need to know how to cast on stitches because this is the beginning of
your work. You do not count this row in the number of rows/needles.
You can find many videos about this on YouTube..
> Search “cast on stitches”.
These videos might not
be necessarily from MYPZ
2. Used stitches
- 2x2 rib stitch: (knit 2, purl 2)
We use this stitch for the bands.
> Search “2x2 rib stitch”.
- Stocking Stitch: (knit and purl):
We use this stitch for the entire cardigan.
For this stitch you knit 1 row and than you purl one row.
> Search “stocking stitch”.
GAUGE:
3.Gauge
10 x 10 stitches
Before you start knitting you have to make a sample (gauge). You have to do in stocking stitch
this because every knitter is different. You could give five knitters the same with needle 15mm>
ball of yarn and the same size needles, and some of them would have 6 ± 14 cm (w) x 13 cm (l)
stitches per inch or cm while others have 9 stitches per inch or cm. It all
depends on your tension. So if you make a gauge you will know if you knit
loosely or not. When you knit loosely, your gauge will be bigger than ours and
you should choose a size smaller to knit. (Check our left column “gauge”).
When you knit loosely, you can also consider to take a smaller needle.
This might have an effect on the pattern measurements.
TIP > Are you knitting
TIP
loosely?
Choose a size smaller
4. Increasing otherwise your cardigan will
turn out bigger than it is
When you increase stitches you are adding an extra stitch (or loop) supposed to be. Or you can
to your needle. There are diferent ways to increase. choose a smaller needle.
> Search “increase”.
5. Cast off
In knitting, binding off, or casting off, is a family of techniques for ending a
column (a wale) of stitches.
> Search “cast off knitting”..

6. Reading the sizes How do you read the sizes in this pattern?

Do you want to extend your
cardigan?
Add an extra number of
rows on the straight parts
on the front and the back.

FOR EXAMPLE:
The patterns says:
Row 7 to 54 > 19/20/22/24 stitches in stocking stitch.”
This means: the pink number is for size S-M, and the green numbers for all sizes.
FOR EXAMPLE
You want to make a cardigan in size S/M and you want to extend it a bit. Knit instead of 54 rows high, ±70
rows high. To determine the exact length for yourself, it is best to measure the length of your work. Have
you reached the desired lenght? Then bind off your work.
Make sure you do this for every part (fronst and back) so they have the same number of needles/rows.
When you are ready for a different color, you have to attach this new thread.
> Search “How to change yarn in knitting”.
