Sculpture
• Sculpture is a three-dimensional form constructed
to represent a natural or imaginary shape.

A sculptor is a person obsessed with the form and shape of things, and it’s not just
the shape of one thing, but the shape of anything and everything: the hard, tense
strength, although delicate form of a bone; the strong, solid fleshiness of a beech
tree trunk. –Henry Moore
UNIQUE QUALITY OF SCULPTURE
• Exists in space
• Viewed from all sides
• Actual space rather than illusion of
space
• A sculptor sets out to fill space with
original, visually appealing forms.
• These forms may echo reality, express
powerful emotions, or communicate
ideas.
GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE
• FREE STANDING
• RELIEF
• ASSEMBLAGE
• KINETIC
• WELDED
• USE OF GLASS
• SYMBOLIC
GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE
• FREE STANDING or FULL ROUND
• This is a kind that can independently stand in space. It has a flat
horizontal base. All its side contribute to the overall form of the
sculpture.
Ex. Guillermo Tolentino’s Oblation

Sculpture that exists in three-dimensional

space. To see all parts of the work you
need to walk around it.
GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE
• RELIEF
• The kind of sculpture that does not have a flat horizontal base
• The form is protected from a flat surface.
Types of relief- sunken relief/ low relief/bas-relief and high relief.
• A relief sculpture protrudes out of a flat surface, and it’s projection
into three dimensional space is relatively shallow.
GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE
GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE
• ASSEMBLAGE
• This sculpture is formed by putting together materials such as found
objects, pieces of art, sponges, wood scraps, and other materials in
unique ways to create a sculpture.
• Ex. Lamberto Hechanova’s Man and Woman

A found object is anything used

in a work of art that is
recognizable as an object that
existed before the sculpture.
Examples include trash or wood
scraps.
GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE
• ASSEMBLAGE
• This sculpture is formed by putting together materials such as found
objects, pieces of art, sponges, wood scraps, and other materials in
unique ways to create a sculpture.
• Ex. Lamberto Hechanova’s Man and Woman
GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE
• KINETIC SCULPTURE
• This is considered as a culture in motion because
the entire sculpture or some parts of the
sculpture are moving with the wind or are
vibrating with the surrounding air.
• contains moving parts and can be set in motion
by air currents or a motor.
GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE
• WELDED SCULPTURE
• Creating this sculptures involve the process of connecting sheets of
metal together by using an acetylene or electric torch.
• Most sculptures of Eduardo Castrillo are welded sculptures.
GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE
• USE OF GLASS
• Ramon Orlina and Imelda Pilapil started the use of glass in sculpture.
Orlina used glass in table pieces, murals and sculptures which are
usually unified into a framework.
GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE
• SYMBOLIC SCULPTURE
• A good example of symbolic sculpture is the interpretation of
Abdulmari Imao on Okir design, which is a Maranao design tradition
that is typically used in woodcarving.
 - Imao produced four contemporary series of the okir: the sarimanok, the sari-
mosque, the sari-okir and calligraphic sculptures.
