Many people think that a whale is a type of fish. Although a whale is not a fish at all, whales
and fish are much alike in many ways. Like fish, whales live in the water. Both whales and fish
have fins to swim. Whales often stay together in groups, which are known as pods. Many kinds of
fish also stay together in groups, which are called schools. Whales are different from fish in one
important way. A fish can breathe underwater, but a whale cannot. A whale must come to the
surface of the water to breathe. It gets air through a hole on its back. A whale can hold its breath
under the water for a long time. However, after a while, it must come back up for more air.
A whale is not a fish, but a mammal. There are many kinds of mammals, like dogs, cats,
and horses. Most mammals live only on land. Some mammals, such as beavers, live partly on
