instances (whether romantic, platonic, family or unrequited) in which love is demonstrated.
Love' is a prominent theme in The Wooing of Beppo Tate by C. Everard Palmer. This
multifaceted emotion involves deep affection, caring, empathy, and can inspire people to act with
kindness, compassion, and understanding towards others, ultimately bringing them together in
meaningful relationships. The story follows the adventures of an adopted boy named Beppo Tate,
who encounters many hardships in his new home. Despite his struggles, he finds comfort in the
love of his stepfather and makes new friends whom he learns to cherish and love. Therefore, we
(the readers), can see the prevalence of the theme of love especially shown when Roy and Beppo
forge a close relationship, Beppo’s fatherly relationship with Old man Tate and Beppo’s crush on
Daphne.
Firstly, Roy and Beppo forge a close relationship. This begins in the beginning of chapter
5 of the novel. Roy and Beppo meet and both exchange questions and answers and realize that
they are more similar than they think. Both of them came from a poor background and are both
adopted with the difference being Beppo’s father only made Old man Tate adopt his son to give
him a better life while Roy’s mother made it seem more like Roy was a product to be sold. These
boys become friends quickly and face many situations in the future. Roy and Beppo, despite their
different backgrounds, are able to connect and find common ground with one another. They
show an interest in each other's lives and well-being, and their shared experiences create a bond
of understanding. This type of connection can be considered a form of love, as it involves a
genuine care for another person and a desire for their happiness.
Secondly, Beppo’s fatherly relationship with Old man Tate. Beppo was adopted by Mr.
Tate, who was genuinely interested in his well-being. He provided wonderful food for Beppo, as
seen in the first chapter. Mr. Tate also provided him with a comfortable home and an education
by sending him to school. Beppo had never imagined experiencing this in his life, but it was all
provided by someone whom he had not known for long. This made Beppo appreciate and respect
Mr. Tate even more, to the point of going along with Teppy's blackmail since he did not want to
be separated from him. The relationship between Beppo and Mr. Tate, characterized by genuine
care and respect, is an example of love. Mr. Tate's adoption of Beppo and provision of necessities
and education shows his care for Beppo's well-being, while Beppo's appreciation and respect for
Mr. Tate demonstrates a bond of affection.
Finally, Beppo’s crush on Daphne. Beppo first meets Daphne at church and could not
help but be attracted to her. He also meets her at his new school, where she says mean things to
him, but he still finds himself intrigued by her. He sets out to learn all he can about her, unable to
resist his fascination with her. This shows Beppo's fascination with Daphne, which goes beyond
physical attraction and suggests a desire to connect with her on a deeper level. This can be
interpreted as a form of love, highlighting the theme that love can involve a meaningful
relationship with another person that transcends superficial qualities.
In conclusion, the theme of love is evident throughout the novel, as seen through when
Roy and Beppo forge a close relationship, Beppo’s fatherly relationship with Old man Tate and
Beppo’s crush on Daphne. These instances highlight how love can manifest in different forms,
whether it be through platonic or familial relationships, or even romantic attraction. Additionally,
the novel demonstrates how love can create a sense of empathy and understanding between
individuals from different backgrounds. Overall, the theme of love is important in the novel as it
emphasizes the power of connection and the human need for relationships.
