EL DELFIN ROSADO

The pink dolphin is one of the emblematic species of the Amazon. It is also called Boto

or Bufeo and is the largest freshwater dolphin. It is known for being friendly and noble,

in Amazonian tribes it is common to hear stories that these animals have saved people

from drowning, taking them to the shore.

Its scientific name is Inia geoffrensis and it belongs to the genus Inea, part of the

Platanistoidea family. The pink dolphin is a cetacean that is not at all like the common

sea dolphin, on the contrary, it has special characteristics to survive in its habitat.

Characteristics of the Pink Dolphin

In the case of males, they measure up to 2.5 meters in length, with an average weight

of up to 184 kilograms. The weight and length of the female does not vary much in

consideration of the male, its weight oscillates between 150 kilograms and can

measure up to about 2.9 meters.

Although it is called the pink dolphin of the Amazon, its color varies over time, at the

moment of birth it has a gray color that with its longevity becomes lighter and changes

until it becomes the characteristic pink color, the males being a little pinker. than the

females.
Location where the pink dolphin lives?

The pink dolphin can be found in rivers, canals, rain-

flooded forests and lakes in the eastern Amazon of
Peru.

They are found in the Amazon River basin and its tributaries,
mainly in the middle and lower reaches of it.

Currently, it is estimated that between 2,500 and 5,000 pink

dolphins remain in the Amazon River Basin. This figure has
drastically decreased in recent years due to the destruction
of their habitats, the introduction of exotic species,
overfishing, water poisoning, global warming, among other
factors.
Why is the pink dolphin on the list of endangered
species?
One of the main factors is excessive logging and
fishing, since these actions modify their ecosystem
and condition the source of their main food, fish.
Another threatening factor is mining, oil extraction
and natural gas, since these processes contaminate
the waters of the river where the pink dolphin lives.
The pink dolphins make up the largest population of
river dolphins that exists because the other 4 species
- in the Ganges (India), the Indo (Pakistan), the
Yangtze (China) and in the Río de la Plata (between
Argentina and Uruguay) - They are extinct or their
survival is also in danger.
The Accelerated destruction of the Amazon Basin
has endangered them several times, in addition, the
traffic of the river is another big problem, since being
curious entities they approach the ships where they
are affected by the propellers.
On the other hand, the noise produced by motors,
machines and acoustic contamination is unpleasant
for the navigation systems of the pink dolphins,
causing the death of many of them.

HOW CAN WE HELP PREVENT THE EXTINCTION OF

THE PINK DOLPHIN?
Some things we can do to protect dolphins are:
1. Avoid contaminating the marine ecosystem with garbage,
plastics, chemical agents or other waste, as well as improperly
placing fishing nets.
2. For no reason buy or eat meat from these animals.
3. Avoid contaminating the rivers where these animals live.
4. Collaborate with entities or non-governmental organizations
(NGO), which need donations and volunteers to carry out
conservation and education brigades that allow the conservation of
the pink dolphin.

both now and in the past, the human being is the main cause of the
loss of different species and it is time that we become aware of
our actions, and try to change, since the earth is home to all
