OBJECTIVES:
1 ) To successfully manufacture a Ball
Peen Hammer head.
2 ) To securely attach the hammer
handle to the Ball Peen hammer head.
3) To be able to practice
manufacturing processes using the
lathe machine.
4) To be able to setup the lathe
machine for tapering process.
5) To produce the hammer with
consideration to its aesthetic
properties.
METHODS/DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
Metalworker Jacques Balpien is
credited with developing the ball peen
hammer. The word "peen" in the name
refers to the act of bending, shaping,
or flattening the material. The head
of a ball peen hammer contains two
ends: one is flat and the other is
rounded. A ball peen, sometimes
referred to as a machinist's hamer.
This tool is an excellent tool for
dealing with steel material. It is
tougher than a claw hammer
which would not likely chip when
struck. They are often used to bend
shape metals, set rivets, and chisels.
Its capabilities in processes such as
punching, riveting, and rounding edges
without breaking any part makes it
fit in metal workshops.
TOOLS/MATERIAL/EQUIPMENT:

1pc. 250 mm x 15 mm (Handle)

MECHANICAL DRAWING
PROCEDURE:
Die
Start
Verify the dimensions of the two Low

Carbon Steel pieces using a vernier
caliper.
Clean the cylinder faces with facing

method.
Mark the little cylinder by using the

lathe to measure 20 mm from the end
to the middle. Run it both ways.
Use the lathe to cut 10 degrees from

the corner to the 20 mm mark.
Use file and sandpaper to refine
Chuck the longest cylinder in the
lathe, then drill both sides of the
cylinder.
The material should be fed until the
radius reaches 13.5mm.
Mark a 130 mm length, then knurl.
From the mark, feed the material
again until the radius becomes 12 mm.
From the knurled length, measure 65
mm and make a mark.
Feed the remaining length from the
mark until the radius is 8 mm.
Connect the head and the hammer by

trimming the excess and hammering to
lock the parts together
File the top until it is not visible and
finish it with sandpaper.

TOPIC QUESTIONS:
1. What forming processes were used
in the manufacture of the ball peen
hammer? Explain each.
With the use of a lathe, we
employed rolling and thread rolling as
the forming techniques to create
the ball peen hammer. When rolling,
we use the facing method,
refining, and finishing the components.
We do the knurling operation in
thread rolling.
2. What needs to be accomplished to
reduce metal chatter when forming
the ball peen head?
The user must adjust by lowering
speeds, feeds, and depth of cut or by
changing the tool path to lessen the
metal clatter.
3. What should be the spindle speed
ideal for working with the ball peen
hammer head?
For forming or creating the required
shape, the spindle speed should be
adjusted at a high speed.
4. Enumerate and draw the tools
required for finishing the specified
hammer.

5. Describe the process of riveting

the ball peen hammer.
The hammer must be riveted by
first inserting the handle into the
head's hole and then hammering the
excess handle to fasten it to the
hammer. After that, for finishing, use
a file and sandpaper.
6. What are the things to be
considered when working with the
lathe machine with regards to
safety? Enumerate and describe in
brief.
Make sure that no hand tool is
attach to the chuck such as chuck
key to avoid accidents from flying
objects.
Remove wrist and hand
accessories to avoid objects being
fed to the machine which may cause
accidents.
Wear safety goggles when using
the machine for your eyes not to get
hit by metal chips.
7. How are cutting tools for the
lathe and shaper machine shaped?
Enumerate the types and describe
each with regards to their
characteristic shapes.
Solid - generally used in turning
operations like lathe turning tool.
Tool bit - a single point cutting tool
that has a cutting edge.
Pointed tool - the tip of the tool is
so fine and the edges end in a single
line.
8. When is cutting fluid required in a
forming tool? Why?
The most frequent usage of
cutting fluids is during the cutting of
metal. Its primary function is to
minimize heat generation during the
machining process. It controls the
increase in temperature and the harm
brought on by heat. Cutting fluids
also considerably decrease friction
between two objects.
9. What is a taper gage? describe the
tool and its proper use.
Taper gages are machined to a
specified thickness that matches a
graduation on the tool. Used for slots
and recesses. Insert the taper gage
until a graduation mark contacts
both sides of the hole, then read the
hole diameter.
10. How do you set the compound rest
in the lathe machine to produce
tapers? explain.
The cutting tool is centered and
moved by carriage. After locking the
carriage, the taper is turned by hand
using the compound rest's handle.
CONCLUSION
The group members got to
experience using the lathe machine's
"shaping" function during the shop
activity. They were able to make the
ball peen hammer by employing their
prior experience using a lathe
machine for the handles and knurling
procedure. The students always
received assistance from the
instructor since the exercise called
for extensive knowledge and skill in
utilizing the lathe machine and the
forming process. Metals may have
rounded edges by using the forming
process. Given all of them, I may
draw the conclusion that the shop
practice involving Ball peen Hammer
is effective since all the stated
goals are achieved.
RECOMMENDATION
The store exercise is
comprehensive with directions,
however there are certain areas
that may be made better. I advise
adhering to the proper method. I also
propose seeking advice from the
technician or lecturer on the
required rpm for a certain activity.
To avoid any incidents, remove all
hand tools from the machine, such as
the chuck key.
