SICAM 8 Software Solution
Practical Example

Our aim:
• Install SICAM S8000 on the LINUX PC
• Integrate a SIPROTEC 5 device via
IEC61850
LINUX PC with pre-installed
LINUX Debian 11

IEC 61850

Page 10 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

SICAM 8 Software Solution
Practical Example

Step 1
Linux Installation: Installing the LINUX PREEMPT_RT patch

IEC 61850

Page 11 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

First we must determine whether
the required Real Time package
is already installed or not

To do that you must first

open the Terminal

Page 12 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Through the "uname –a" command
we can find it out

If no "PREEMPT_RT" text,
then the RT Patch must be installed

Page 13 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

To do that we must switch to the
"root" user with the command "su –"

Then we type the password

for user "root"

This shows that the user "root"

is active in the terminal

Page 14 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

To install the RT Patch
you need internet connection.
Then you type: apt-get install linux-
image-rt-amd64, and then ENTER

Page 15 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Then, we confirm the warning
about required disk space with Y,
and then we click ENTER…

Page 16 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

The update has been installed.

Page 17 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Now, we must reboot the machine...

Page 18 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

After reboot we can check
in the terminal with the command
"uname –a" if the RT Patch
has been properly installed.

Page 19 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

SICAM 8 Software Solution
Practical Example

Step 1
Installing the S8000 Instance in the LINUX PC

IEC 61850

Page 20 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We need to copy the S8000
installation file into the LINUX PC
So first, we will open the Files
application.
For that, we click on "Activities"
And then on "Files"

Now, we can bring the installation

file through a USB Pen Drive

Page 21 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We can easily copy
the installation file…

Page 22 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

And now we can paste it
in the Home folder

Page 23 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Where we can extract it…

Page 24 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

And now we can rename
the extracted folder…
maybe as S8000

Now we open the Terminal

via Activities – typing "T",
and then click on "Terminal"

Page 25 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Now we open the Terminal
via Activities – typing "T",
and then click on "Terminal"

Page 26 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

And we will browse in the
terminal to the S8000 folder
by typing "cd S8000" We also
browse in the Files application.

Page 27 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Now we will install the S8000
package.
We need to elevate the privileges
of our user, so we use
the command "sudo su"

Page 28 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

And now we install the S8000
package with the command
"./setup.sh"

Page 29 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

When prompted, we give a name
for the instance of SICAM S8000
we are installing.
Example: SICORE1
And then we continue with ENTER

Page 30 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

The setup has been finished

Now, pay attention to the file

system_config.json where the links
between PC and the factory settings
of the S8000 instance are defined.

Page 31 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Here you can see the definition of the engineering ip
address, and the link between the physical Ethernet
port in the PC (in this case, ens33) and the internal LAN
port defined in S8000 (seth0).

Normally you don‘t have to change anything in this file.

The file is created automatically matching the MAC Addresses
of the physical Ethernet ports available in the PC.
But you can check and adapt there the mapping done
between the physical interfaces (e.g. ens33) and the S8000
LAN interfaces (e.g. seth0)

Page 32 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

The final step is to start the S8000 service of the installed
instance. Since we named this S8000 instance "SICORE1",
the service can be started with the line command:
"systemctl start SICORE1"

After having done that, even if we reboot the PC again, upon

start up the S8000 service will be started automatically.

Page 33 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

SICAM 8 Software Solution
Practical Example

Step 2: Engineering the S8000 Instance in SICAM Device Manager

IEC 61850

Page 34 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We will show the configuration in a new project,
which we have called "S8000Proj"

Page 35 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

In order to be able to configure a SICAM S8000
instance, the minimum SICAM Device Manager
version required is the version 4

Page 36 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

The first step is to equip the SICAM S8000 firmware in SICAM Device Manager.
In the current version this firmware is included by default, but there will always be
updates available, and the update process is exactly the same.

First you go to the hamburger button on the upper-left corner…

And then to "Applications"

Page 37 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

And now you press the
button to import new
firmware into SICAM
Device Manager

Page 38 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Then, you browse to the location where the
applications are stored, and you select one-by-one
each firmware or application you want to import.

Page 39 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Then, all the firmware of the selected applications will be imported
into SICAM Device Manager, so it will be accessible for configuration
of the corresponding applications.

The check button will close the window and will bring us back to the place
in SICAM Device Manager where we were before we started importing
the applications.

Page 40 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We will now create a new device through the add device button
on the upper-right corner…

Page 41 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We will define the name…

The device type…

And the engineering address (we should leave the default value at first),
Region and component number, and CASDU1 and CASDU2, exactly as we
do when configuring a SICAM A8000

Page 42 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Now we can click on the container that has been created for the configuration
of our SICAM S8000

Page 43 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We will first configure the SICAM S8000 hardware

Page 44 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We add the CPU…

Page 45 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We add the CPU…

Page 46 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We add the CPU…with the corresponding firmware for the core system and SICAM Web

Page 47 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We can now check the properties
of the created CPU…
Page 48 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA
We can now check the properties where the internal ethernet connection
of the created CPU… seth0 is included
Page 49 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA
Next, we go to Home…and from there,
to "Communication"

There, the LAN interface LAN1 is

defined and assigned to the virtual
Ethernet interface defined
in the hardware

Page 50 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Under "Server
services" it can be
defined through
which LAN
the configuration
of the S8000
will be possible

Page 51 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Now, we go back to "Home" again, and we will go
to the box "Application configuration", where we can
equip the S8000 with the firmware for the applications
we want to have there.

Page 52 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

The core firmware
(SICORE) has been
already equipped
as we created
the S8000

Page 53 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Under "S8000 RTU"
we can enter the
standard RTU
firmware…

So we add first
the master
component…

Page 54 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

And now, within
the central master
component, we will
add the firmware for
the communication
protocols. In our
case we are
interested in the
ETI5 firmware
for IEC61850

Page 55 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Finally, we can also
check here the
Firmware for
SICAM Web

Page 56 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Now that we have equipped the IEC61850 firmware, we can
proceed to integrate the SIPROTEC 5 device. This is done
in exactly the same way it is done on any SICAM A8000 RTU.

Page 57 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We must go to the ETI5 client box of the corresponding PRE…

Page 58 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

And now we select the "import" button on the upper-right corner…

where we now select the configuration file to import

(CID/IID/SCD)

Page 59 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We select now the device to import…

Page 60 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

And the information to import…

Page 61 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Step 3 – Loading the S8000 configuration on the LINUX PC

IEC 61850

Page 69 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

The loading is performed from SICAM Device Manager
on the device configuration going back to Home, and then going
to the box "Upload & Download"

Page 70 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

After the first connection the
warning related to untrusted
certificates is displayed.

Then, a user name and password

is requested.
Since this is the initialization
of the S8000, the user name is
"administrator", and there is no
associated password, so this field
is left blank

Page 71 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

The S8000 will request then to define
a new password.

Page 72 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

The comparison between what has been loaded (nothing, since the S8000 is in factory settings)
and what is in SICAM Device Manager is displayed here.
We are advised to initialize the S8000.
We do this through the "Upload to device" button

Page 73 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

Page 74 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA
Page 75 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA
Page 76 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA
Page 77 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA
Once ready, SDM indicates that all the update has been successful

Page 78 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2023 | SI EA

We can now use SICAM Web to monitor our newly configured
SICAM S8000
