Pronunciation Diagnostic

A. Read and record the sentences below at a natural speaking pace. There is no need to rush.
1. “Splish splash I was taking a bath, round about a Saturday night …” Lyrics and themes in the fifties were
shallow and basic. For thirty years, thousands of passionate, youthful, North Americans shouted as they
danced and shifted to these thoughtless songs. This era showed the fashion of the wishful shoe-tapping
youths. Many think of those mythical times.
2. Vic used to have a big, ugly, pet dog, Steve. Last August he went on vacation. He didn’t have a girlfriend
and his pals were unavailable. The airport agent read his immigration papers and said not to leave due to
new regulations. Poor Vic, that evening, he got very sleepy, so after a nap, listened to some rap, and ate an
apple and an egg. What a good adventure!
3. Zebras are native to southern Africa. When chased by a cheetah, they zigzag in bunches with each
other. Their eyes have a wide view. To search for water to bathe, a zebra will dig a hole in a dried
riverbed. They chew by crunching dates all day, but are bothered by hazy midday heat, which they
loathe. Zoo life is easier.
4. Jello is not like jam, fudge, or yogurt. Generally, we make it with fruit and gelatin. Kids usually eat it
after meals. Yet, if you are imaginative enough, as a challenge, there are uses beyond dessert for your
budget. It is a safe, non-baked, product any cook can arrange frequently. Keep it in the refrigerator before
serving.
5. Rob found a treasure box with a note in his garage: “To measure your strength, open me.” He thought
about the beige chest and grabbed a hammer to complete the job. “I love getting long massages, drinking
wine in a robe, leisure time, and not being hungry.” Suddenly, an alarm rang. It had been a dream – a
mirage. He was embarrassed and angry.
6. Hotel guests want new linen, soft pillows and hot meals. At the King Edward Hotel, Nick Lemon, on his
customers’ behalf, now has the award-winning New Moon Bahama Luncheon with flowers by the pool. He
is also long ahead of his time, with a new alcohol allowance.

B. Read and record the sentences below at a natural speaking pace. There is no need to rush.
1. Please believe me that sweet peas and beans are good. Eat them at least twice a week.
2. Tim’s sister lives in an igloo and swims. It keeps her fit, slim, and trim.
3. Ben said ten times seven is seventy, and seven times eleven is seventy-seven.
4. Africa has many animals, for example, camels, giraffes, parrots, and bats.
5. Jogging is good for the body, but doctors say chocolate causes problems.
6. Drew flew to the moon, but June is too soon for his next lunar flight.
7. Would you look for my cookbook? It’s full of hints for good cookies and pudding.
8. The public election was fun. The governor won by one hundred votes.
9. Nurses work hard. They certainly deserve a word of praise.
10. Labor Day is in September. We honor workers and their partners.
11. Maine is a state in the United States. It’s a great place for a vacation.
12. The Pole is close to the ocean. It’s known for polar bears, snow, and cold.
13. Owls are now found throughout. They don’t like crowds and loud sounds.
14. Eyesight is vital for a normal life. I prize mine highly, so does my wife.
15. The toy industry is a loyal employer in Detroit. We enjoy their choices.
16. Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and Europe are continents. North America is another.
