he Channel Tunnel, one of the most famous in the world, is a 50
km tunnel under the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. The
tunnel links Great Britain and France, and it runs for 39 km under
the sea. It has the longest undersea portion of any other tunnel in the
world. The “Chunnel,” as it is often called, is really made up of three
tunnels: two are used for trains and the third serves as a service
tunnel or an emergency escape route.
The Channel Tunnel was one of the largest construction projects of
the 20th century and is still considered an engineering marvel. The
average depth of the tunnel is 50 meters below the seabed, but the
lowest point is 75 meters deep. The tunnel was officially opened
by Queen Elizabeth II and President Francois Mitterrand in 1990.
Today, an average of 400 trains pass through the tunnel every day,
carrying over 50,000 passengers. The trip takes around 35 minutes.
If your European travel plans include visits to London and Paris, you
might prefer to take a high-speed train ride through the tunnel from
one city to another, rather than crossing the Channel by ferry or
booking a flight. Wouldn’t you like to experience traveling under
the seabed? You can buy either one-way or round-trip tickets and
fares vary depending on the class you prefer: premier class, which
includes a three-course meal and a drink, comfort or first class, which
includes a snack and a drink, or economy class. Visit our website for
online reservations.
