To study the plant population
YOU NEED Materials required
Hammer, (5) Measuring tape, (6) Noting pad/paper.
(1) Metre scale, (2) String, (3) Nails, (4)
HOW TO DO IT
1. Select a good growing/cultivated field/parkgrassland and set the field for study.

COMMENTS AND CONCLUSIONS
1. From the quadrat study of the selected
field/park/grassland area there are no. of plant species.
2. The average population density of plants of_
species is highest and of. species it is lowest.
3. This means that this soil (selected area) is suitable for the
growth species.
4. species of plant is dominant over other species studied.
Precautions
BE CAREFUL
1. Select a
good/wildly growing/cultivated area. s i
2. Carefully count the plants. Do not make a mistake to recount the plants. (It will give wrong results.)
3. Select one species of plant population for
counting at one time.
4. Plants coming under the string can be avoided.
5. Note the data immediately in the observation table.
Note: The above survey/study can be repeated during different seasons of the year for interesting data.
1. Population is the group of individuals of a particular species in a particular area at a given specific time. It is of two
types:
(a) Mono specific population. The population of individuals of only one type of species.
(6) Mixed or poly specific population. The population of more than one species. It is also called a community.
2. The study of individuals of the same species where process such as interdependence etc., and factors governing, it is
studied/considered is called population ecology.
3. The method adopted to study here is the crude density. It is the density (number or biomass) per unit total space.
4. Population density increases only by natality (birth rate) or immigration and decreased by mortality (death rate) or
emigration. Some factors may be density dependent (eg., competition and predation) or density independent.
5. There are three different phyto sociological methods for recording various species of the community.
By taking any sampling unit like quadrat, transect and point.
6. In Quadrat method the sampling unit is definite area which can be in the form of a square, a rectangle or a circle.
