Your brain has many jobs - and different parts

of your brain do different jobs.

Your brain stem's job is to control your breathing,
heart rate, temperature, sleep, sneezing, coughing, and
digestion.

Brain stem
Your cerebellum's job is to control balance and
movement. This even includes moving your mouth and
lips to talk

Cerebellum
The temporal lobe's job is to store your memories and
remember language.

Temporal Lobe
Your prefrontal cortex has some important jobs.

It controls behavior like paying attention, making plans,

following expectations, setting goals, and more

It's sometimes called your "thinking brain"

Prefrontal cortex
The job of your amygdala is to manage fear and big
emotions, and keep you safe.

It's sometimes call your surviving brain.

Amygdala
All these areas of your brain, and more, work together to do
everything you and your body needs

But... your brain keeps growing until you're 25 years old.

Because your brain is still a kid, just like you, it's still learning
about all it's jobs and the best ways to do them.
Sometimes, like when you're upset, or
overwhelmed, your prefrontal cortex doesn't
know what to do!
When this happens, your amygdala will take over and start
controlling your behavior.

This isn't something you think about. It's called fight or flight
instinct.

When your fight or flight instinct is turned on - it's like your
thinking brain gets locked up.

You cant really control the way you're acting, even if people
are telling you what to do.
You might feel out of control, scared, or really angry when
this happens. Here are some of the things you might do
during fight or flight.

run away scream & yell

hit or kick
hide

throw or
cry break things

feel like you

spit don't know how
to make it stop
You probably know later that these aren't good
choices to make.

But you can't stop until your surviving brain unlocks

your thinking brain.

This is when you will start feeling calm again.

Kids and grownups. It doesn't matter where

they're from, how old they are, what their gender
is or their job.

It's a brain response that happens when

something is too overwhelming for our thinking
brain to handle.
But, when your thinking brain knows lots of good skills
and coping strategies, it happens much less often.

Your thinking brain gets better and better at it's job as

you grow up, and also when you practice.

Your surviving brain only takes over when your

thinking brain doesn't know what to do or you are in
danger.
Here are some things your thinking brain might need to
practice. Everybody is good at different things and you might
already know how to do some of things, and some you might
not.
