Vidyasagar Science Olympiad, 2021

Identifying talented students of class IX, West Bengal

an initiative of
School Education Department, Govt. of West Bengal

organized by
Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search, Kolkata
Background
 Vidyasagar Science Olympiad is a great initiative
from the Department of School Education, Government of
West Bengal for identifying and nurturing Class IX
Science talents of our state when they are very young.

 The students of class IX are of special significance as


it is the period when students get preliminary exposure to
the advanced level of every spectrum of science.

 Enrich their in-depth scientific understanding which


in turn will be beneficial to enrich the pool of human
resource of our state in the field of science and
technology.
Objectives
 Identification of talented science students (class IX) of
West Bengal.
 To expose the young minds to the diverse fields of
science and technology and motivate them for
studying science.
 Capacity building through science workshops,
seminers and by hands on activities in state-of-art
laboratories.
 To motivate for inventions and innovations by
encouraging and developing their creative aptitude.
 To nurture the talented students to face the challenges
of national and international science olympiads.
 To strengthen the contribution of the scientific fraternity
from the state in the global perspective.
Eligibility Criteria
School Category:
 All government schools under West Bengal Board of
Secondary Education.
 All Non - Government recognised Aided and Sponsored
Schools.
 All D. A. getting schools under West Bengal Board of
Secondary Education.
Students’ Category:
 Top 5 students of class IX of a school (nominated by H.M /
A.H.M / T.I.C of a school based on the performance in the
Annual Examination of class VII.
Syllabus:
 The examination will be based up to class VIII science and
mathematics syllabus of West Bengal State Board. Model
questions can be downloaded from www.jbnsts.ac.in

Layer 3: State Level Competition


Participants: Top 20% students of each
district selected through Layer – 2

Layer 2: Competition among the students


under each district of West Bengal.
Participants:Top 10%students of each unit
selected through Layer– 1.
Layer 1:Competition among the students under each demographical unit
(Block / Municipal Corporations) of our state.
Participants: Top 5 students of class IX of each school of a unit based on the
performance in the Annual Examination of class VII.
First layer examination: Intra Unit competition
 This test will be conducted among the schools under a unit. For larger
municipalities, more than one center may be allotted. (Total ~ 348 units
: 341 blocks & Municipalities + 7 municipal corporation).
 Each unit of all individual district of West Bengal will be covered.

Tentative number of appearing candidates: 8942 schools x 5 candidates from
each school = 44,710 nos. (Approximately 45,000)

Outcome:
 Top 3 candidates of each Unit will be awarded a Book
Grant of Rs.1000/- .
 Top 10% students from each unit will qualify for Second
Layer of examination and will be acknowledged by
participation certificate.

Second layer examination: Intra District competition
 This test will be conducted for the top 10% qualified

 Top 10 candidates of each district will be awarded a Book
Grant of Rs.2000/- .
 Top 20% students from each district will qualify for Third
Layer of examination.
Third layer examination: Intra State competition
 This test will be conducted among top 20% qualified
students from second level of all districts of our state.

Tentative number of appearing candidates: 20% of 4,500 = 900
Outcome:
 Finally top 100 hundred students from all over West
Bengal will be selected as scholarship awardees.
 They will be awarded scholarship of Rs. 1000/- per month
during Class IX and X and annual book grant of Rs. 2500/-
for two years and certificate.
 Each of the selected students will get the opportunity to
participate in two science workshops and there will be
training sessions for nurturing them for the subject wise
National Olympiad.
