References
• Announced with z/13
• New FICON routing technique for FICON interswitch links (ISLs)
• Enables ISL routes to be dynamically changed based on the
Fibre Channel exchange ID
• ISL is assigned at I/O request time
• Advantages
• Support sharing of ISLs between FICON and FCP (Metro
Mirror/PPRC or distributed)
• I/O traffic is better balanced between all available ISLs
• Improve utilization of FICON directors and ISLs
• Easier to manage with a predictable and repeatable I/O
performance
• Enabled by definition of dynamic routing capable switches and
control units in HCD

• Description
• “FEC improves the bit error rate to the same amount as though
the signal were 2.5 dB stronger, relative to the fixed amount of
receiver noise.”
• Advantages
• Controls errors in data transmission over unreliable or noisy
communication links
• Typically corrects errors without retransmission
• Receiver corrects errors without needing to request
retransmission of data

• Support for cascaded FICON configurations over interswitch
links (ISLs) called FICON Multihop
• Description
• Allows support for cascading up to four switches
• Three hops (previously restricted to two cascaded switches aka
one hop)
• Advantages
• Support multiple configurations for easy deployment of
GDPS
• Improve utilization of FICON directors and switches
• Simpler and easier to manage configurations for SAN
availability
