My Teaching Philosophy

My belief is that a teacher’s goal is to set up their students for their best success in life;

this is the philosophy that I follow. Students should be the center and heart of the classroom.

Not only setting students up academically but socially as well. Skills such as critical and rational

thinking are crucial and can be taught with any subject. Whereas social skills can be taught by

example and just having empathy. I want my students to feel well equipped to step into the next

chapter of their life, no matter what it is. While I think that most teachers would agree that

setting up their students for life is important, there are many ways to do this.

Classroom is a Family

I believe an important aspect to set students up for life is to create a second family in a

classroom. I want to create a space where no student feels judged. If learners are willing to be a

little bit vulnerable, they will not be as scared to get the answers wrong which allows them to

become more engaged in lessons. Empathy is important to create such a welcoming space.

The ability for everyone to understand how each other feels can really help change the

atmosphere of the classroom.

A family in the classroom is also important to build a support system and safe space for

children with harder home lives. Many people do not have a perfect home life, however, they

may not show this to others. I think it is important to create a space where children feel safe and

comfortable to be in. I want my classroom to be an escape for the children who may need it.

Adapting to the Classroom

In order to set students up for their best success, I also believe I must adapt to the

classroom. Each and every student is unique and so are their learning styles. I want to change

my teaching style and the concepts I teach based on the needs of the classroom. It is important
for me that I do not get stuck in my comfort zone of teaching. Supplying information in different

forms can help all students learn in the way they can best; these include hands-on activities,

powerpoints, projects, worksheets, videos, and more. I also believe that I should adjust my

lesson plans to what the students in my classroom need. While it is great to have a schedule

planned out, some topics may take students more time then what is expected. I want to be able

to adapt to this because it will help the students master their knowledge on any one subject.

There are many different teaching philosophies out there, and I do not believe that any

website or philosopher has got the science completely nailed down. I think different teaching

philosophies may work for different teachers or classrooms, and a variety of philosophies may

create a well rounded school. My teaching philosophy aligns closely with essentialism, but I

believe it contains aspects of the other teaching philosophies as well. At the heart of my

classroom, it is important that students leave feeling loved and that they are ready for what is

next for them.
