Senior Capstone
Name: Cindy Pinedo-Hernandez

This is also the outline for your paper (with the exception of your conclusion).
1. Self-Biography (Bullets are fine!)

I am a first gen Mexican-American, I was born in Grand Rapids Michigan on April, 22nd, 2005.
I am the oldest of my mom and dads children and the middle child with my mom and her ex’s
children. I am passionate about providing more resources to Spanish speaking individuals in
the U.S. Along with this I want to help show more representation of hispanic people in the U.S
that aren’t negative or strictly about family. Although family is a big part of the culture, it’s tiring
to see
● Born in Grand Rapids Mi
● Born April,22,2005
● Eldest Child of 3
● First Gen Mexican-American
● Trans and queer latino
● Would like to be an independent artist with an original story series.
● I want to make representation that doesn’t hurt people, representation that doesn’t
make a community look like a joke.(Idk how else to word it)
● I believe that story telling holds more power than people think. People believe what
they see in the media. So it is vital to have good representation for marginalized
groups.
In my childhood I only saw representation for people like me in latin media, it was rare
to find good representation for latinos in American media. When I did see people like
me we were only side characters who would help tie in the connections to drugs and
gangs. But in my experience Mexican people from upon drugs because they know it’s
effects, this dislike mainly comes from older people but I still know a good amount of
people my age that also don’t do substances like weed or cocaine. Although I don’t
want to create a narrative that we’re all good because I don’t want to portray a lie, most
media shows the worst parts of us. I just want to show people that they don’t have to
fall into a stereotype because it’s easier to fit into it than to break out of it.

2. Future Goals (Bullets are fine!)

● Graduate
● Start growing an audience
● Start posting story
● Make merchandise
● (Maybe even turn the story into a cartoon, but this isn’t really necessary.)
I suppose I want to be able to work from home, I don’t need a big place, I'd be fine with a one
bedroom apartment. I think making 75k a year would be a good enough income for me, I don’t
like wasting on unnecessary items. To guarantee a stable income I will also have to get an
accounting degree until my illustrating career takes off enough where I can quit that job.

3. Route you will take to achieve your future goals (Bullets are Fine!)

I will have to go to an art school to better learn how to storyboard and how to make
proper character design. Also attending an art school will help me get connections with
people in the industry who could help me find a publisher if I decide to turn my digital
story into a physical copy.

4. Career Pathway Area of Interest: (ex. Arts & Communication)

Arts

5. Narrowed Career Focus: (ex. Public Relations)

Book illustrator

A community/work issue that can be solved with a particular skill set from your career
area (How will I give back?) (ex. Create a campaign to give back to a local cause)

I feel like a story time hour would be one way to give back along with holding classes (for free)
where kids can try out story creating. Maybe they could give me a story and I illustrate it for
them. ( The problem is children not being able to understand literature/story processing,
something else that plays into the struggle is that not all parents can do storytime due to the
parents language barrier with the books in an American school.)

The question: How can book illustrating spark an interest in reading into children?
How can a book illustrator inspire students to create stories/books?

My potential hands-on will be: MUST BE VERY DETAILED! (ex. Showcase the entire
campaign.)

*This will be where you will showcase what you created that addresses a community/work
issue.

My Hands on project will be a workshop hour(s), there are many kids who have trouble
reading so why not make it fun for them. I can have an event at the ECC or at any building
that many people have access to. I’ll read to the kids and set up workstations where they can
have time to read or draw. Some kids don’t like reading but they like stories. What kid doesn’t
like movies? They can create a series of drawings and make a story based upon those
drawings. Along with what has been stated I know that many of the student in this community
are bilingual mainly in english and spanish, spanish speakers don’t get the chance to prove
themselves in their native language, they should also be given the chance to learn in spanish
because that is such a big part of identity.

1. What personal interest do you have in this topic? Why have you chosen this topic for your
Senior Project/Showcase? I have always loved art and I enjoy story telling. I love getting
invested in stories, I have many original characters whose stories I want to share with
others.

2. What research questions will you seek to answer? What kinds of sources might you look
for? How can book illustrating help children get into literature? I’ll have to look at sources
from academic sites.

3. Who is a person/company (specifically, or in general) with experience or expertise in this

field you might interview? What understanding do you hope to gain from this
person/company?

I’m interested in interviewing our art teacher since she does have experience with going
to school for art and that's what I want to know the most about. And she makes her own
art so it would be nice to know how to balance work and passion.

4. What situations, events, or places could you observe or experience to gain insight into
your topic? Being inside an elementary school classroom might help get some insight on
what stories spark the most interest in children.
5. What challenges might you encounter with your research or project? What assistance or
tools will you need to overcome them? I think getting my idea into

6. What other questions or concerns do you have about your Senior Capstone Project at
this time? None
