Reflexive pronouns (myself / yourself etc.

)
When the subject and object of a sentence refer to the same person or thing, we use a reflexive
pronoun as the object rather than a personal pronoun.

Compare:
• She forced her to eat it. ('she' and 'her' refer to different people) and
• She forced herself to eat it. ('she' and 'herself' refer to the same person)

a. The singular forms of reflexive pronouns are myself, yourself, herself, himself, itself; the
plural forms are ourselves, yourselves, themselves. Some people use themselves (or
themself) to refer to the subject of the sentence, to avoid saying whether the subject is male or
female:
• It is a situation that no doctor wants to find themselves {or themself) in.
Here are some more examples of reflexive pronoun
- I don't want you to pay for me. I'll pay for myself.
- The old lady sat in a corner talking to herself.
- Don't get angry. Control yourself! (said to one person)
- If you want more tomcat, help yourselves, (said to more than one person)
- The party was great. We enjoyed ourselves very much.

But we do not use 'myself etc. after bring/take something with ...:
- I went out and took an umbrella with me. (not 'with myself)
b. Some verbs are rarely or never used with a reflexive pronoun in English, but often are in other
languages. These include complain, concentrate, get up/hot/tired, lie down, meet, relax,
remember, sit down, wake up, wash, dress, shave:
- I feel great after having a swim, (not '1 feel myself great')
- You must try and concentrate.
- It's good to relax.
- I got up, shaved, washed and dressed, (not 'shaved myself etc.)
But we say: I dried myself.

c. Study the difference between —selves and each other:
- Nina and Ani stood in front of the mirror and looked at themselves.
(= Nina and Ani looked at Nina and Ani)
but: Nina looked at Ani and Ani looked at Nina. They looked at each other. You can use one
another instead of each other:
- How long have you and Siska known each other (or one another)?
- Siska and Alam like each other (or one another).

d. We can use reflexive pronouns for emphasis:

• 'Who repaired your bicycle for you?' 'Nobody. I repaired it myself.' (not anybody else.)
• We phoned the plumber and he came himself, (he didn't send his employees)
• I hope you like the ice cream - 1 made it myself, (nobody helped me)
• I was given this book by the author herself, (by her personally)
• The film itself wasn't very good but I liked the music
• Let's paint the house ourselves. It will be much cheaper.

We use reflexive pronouns to emphasise that the subject caused a certain action.
Compare:
• He got arrested, and • He got himself arrested. (= he did something to cause it)

e. Here is another use of reflexive pronoun

On my own and by myself both mean alone. We say:
- I like living on my own / by myself.
- Did you do your homework on your own / by yourself?
- Ai was sitting on his own / by herself in a corner of the cafe.
- Learner drivers are not allowed to drive on their own / by themselves.
