D) Introduction to leadership
The leadership refers to the process of leading. Without followers, there cannot be a leader. It involves a
relationship between leaders and followers (i.e., mutual trust, respect and loyalty) and requires providing
empowerment, effective communication, trust and team-building by the leader.
Leadership is morally purposeful and goal oriented. Leaders point the way to a desired future (vision,
mission and core values) with plans and strategies to reach those goals. Leadership is causative, by affecting
the motives of individuals and organizations, alters the course of the organizational history and causes
transformative changes in the company and the world.
Leadership is the capability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable members of an
organization that will contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the company. Leadership quality is
based on Creativity (idea), innovation (product and services) and entrepreneurship (customer-focused
marketing and sales).
Leadership impacts the effectiveness of all aspects of a company: Employees’ motivation and
engagement, companies’ revenue, cost, profit, market value, share price, organizational effectiveness and
culture and customers’ satisfaction, trust and loyalty.
Leadership is collective. One-person leadership does not exist since both leaders and followers must co-
exist. An organization may have multiple leaders, acting in consort with one another and serving different
roles and functions (e.g., Chairman, CEO, CFO, COO, Director, Manager and Employees).
According to Peter Drucker, a leader is defined by goal setting and performance they deliver. Effective
leaders define the organization’s mission, establish it, and set the priorities and the standards. Leaders take
responsibility for their performance, the mistakes made by their subordinates and for the organizations.
An effective leader knows that the ultimate task of leadership is to create human energies and vision.
The requirement of effective leadership is to earn trust by showing conviction that their integrity.
