LESSON

Lesson 1: Designs of children’s wear

Children’s wear is a clothing product category for children under 12.

Comfortable Clothing Is Important

When buying children's clothes, comfort is an significant aspect to remember.
There are three key elements of comfort to take into account.

Temperature. Clothes can make kids uncomfortably warm or cold. Comfortable

clothing makes it easier to absorb and ventilate so the body moisture
It will readily evaporate. The fabrics of cotton and cotton blends are absorbent and
convenient for little kids. In warm weather, one hundred percent synthetic fabrics,
which are typically non-absorbent, are uncomfortable for kids.
Consider the comfort of a baby if disposable diapers are regularly used. Such
diapers do not allow ventilation and, if care is not taken, skin irritation can result.

Restriction. Kids do not like wearing clothes that limit body movement. Clothing
that is too small or too big can hinder and interfere with body movement.
with the behaviors of an infant. Stop tiny necklines, armholes, sleeves, and
waistlines that are too tight and uncomfortably elastic. It is also important to avoid
clothing that is too big and that twists around the body or trips the infant.

4
Irritating textures. The delicate skin of a child may be irritated by rough or scratchy
fabrics, fasteners, and seam finishes. Apparel made from a soft cotton or cotton
blend The textiles are comfortable and easy to look after. For young children 's
wear, knitted fabrics are excellent options because they:
• allow ventilation, yet give warmth;
• mold to the shape of the body without restricting body movement;
• are soft against the skin; and
• “stretch” to make dressing easier.
To prevent bulky seams and scratchy fasteners, be sure to check the design of each
garment. For the baby to lie on, heavy zippers, snaps, and buttons would be
awkward. Metal zippers can be rough and irritate the skin and, if exposed to the
sun for too long, they may become uncomfortably warm.

Special sewing hints for children’s dress

1. For durability, substitute machine for hand stitches wherever it is practical and
not unsightly to do so baste down facings.
2. For extra strength, stitch areas of strain, such as armholes, twice.
3. For ease in handling really small garments, attach the sleeves before closing the
underarm seam.
4. For ease of care, choose fabric that are washable; also check the care
requirements of white or pastel colors. Although cottons and synthetic blends are
usually the first choices for children’s garments, washable wools are also suitable.
5. To please the child, pick bright colors and lively prints. Large designs can be
overwhelming.
6. For convenience, always provide a pocket or two. Children like places to keep
small possessions.
7. A good safety precaution is to have reflective tape strips to outer garments,
especially if they are dark in color.
8. To make handed-down garment different for the younger brother or sister, add a
special appliqué, pockets or monogram. Also consider changing the garment style;
could a dress with sleeves be made into a pinafore for the new owner?
