Alito L. Malinao in his book, Journalism for Filipinos, quoted M. Lyle Spencer as
he defines editorial as “ an expression of fact and opinion in concise, logical, pleasing order
for the sake of entertaining, or influencing opinion, or policies in such a way that its
importance to the average reader will be clear.”
Further, an editorial is an article that states the concerted opinions or single stand of
the publication’s staff on a particular issue. Editorials are meant to influence public opinion,
promote critical thinking and sometimes cause people to take action on an issue. In essence,
an editorial is an opinionated news story.
Editorials are believed to be the heart and soul of the newspapers. Each and every
newspaper is incomplete without the editorial section.
Characteristics of an Editorial
1. It follows a pattern. An editorial is an essay like a feature story. This means that the
editorial article should bear an introduction, body and conclusion.
Functions of Editorial
1. Explain or interpret. Editors often use editorials to explain the way the newspaper
covered a sensitive or controversial subject. In a school setting, the publication may
explain new school rues or a particular student body effort like a fund-drive.
3. Persuade. An editorial primarily aims at driving the readers to crusade with the paper’s
stand. Hence, the paper’s task, being in the realm of journalism, is to encourage others
to take a specific positive action.
4. Praise. Editorials are also used to commend people and organizations for having
contributed something to champion progress, development and peace.
Editorial Structure
An editorial is similar to an essay that focuses on a specific issue or topic, offers a
thesis and provides evidence and supporting arguments to convince its readers.
2. Introduction. It contains the issue or news peg and the reaction. An introduction comes
in different forms like a thought-provoking question, a quotation relevant to the subject, a
striking statement or narration of the event.
Ex. We have entered the sixth month of community quarantine, imposed at various levels
across the archipelago and still we are seeing the highest number of Covid-19 cases in
Southeast Asia.
3. Body. It presents the factual details to bolster the opinion or principle of the newspaper
on the given issue. Arguments here are arranged from the most significant to the least
significant ones.
Ex. As of September 20, 2020, the total number of infected persons in the country
has reached 286, 743, with the daily reported new cases averaging above 3, 000 this month.
While painfully recognizing that every single death is a tragedy for all, the one mitigating
note in the Philippines’s Covid situation is the relatively low death rate. As of September
20, the death toll stood at 4, 984. And yet, the danger is so real to the vulnerable populations
that businesses have had to tiptoe around imposing strict protocols sometimes revised at a
dizzying place as they try to reboot.
Blaming the government and concerned state institutions has become the favorite
pastime of many Filipinos on social media. People tend to look outward and put blame on
others, instead of focusing on what they can do on their own to help curb the spread of the
disease. Despite the consistent public calls of local and international government and health
agencies, some people still choose to ignore protocols in practicing the minimum health
standards. It has not helped that the safeguard deniers have clothed their defiance of
protocols with the apparent double standard certain powerful people were not sanctioned
for their own breaches of quarantine rules.
Just recently, the Acting President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the
Philippines, Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, said that a more holistic approach to the response
to the pandemic should consider proactive promotion of a positive mindset that gives flesh
to the values of love, compassion, prudence and patience. This, most especially at a time
when many people are experiencing uncertainty with the unprecedented loss of lives, jobs
and economic slowdown. While some would probably question the relevance of the church
in the pandemic issue, recall that even Justice Secretary Menardo Jimenez acknowledged
the capability of the faith-based sector in helping Filipinos undergoing mental health and
psychosocila problems. “Pananagutan sa bawat isa(Looking out for each one),” David has
said, will give rise to the consciousness of accountability; that our actions, or inaction, will
affect other people. Every Filipino can help by channeling the spirit of bayanihan(concerted
effort and heroism) and our demonstration of malasakit(concern) to each human being. In
fact, these core values were actually communicated in a public service ad by Filipino
company Unilab with the tag line, “Malasakit ang kailangan upang Covid-19 ay mapigilan.”
Ex. We sink or swim in this country so we have no other choice but to move as one. And
we cannot simply pin all our hopes on the discovery of a vaccine that is supposed to
provide immunity. This is the best time to let the Filipino spirit take us through this
pandemic. As one Facebook post said, “Pandemic ka lang, Pilipino kami.”
Kinds of Editorial
____3. Written especially in the beginning of an editorial, news peg is the term referring to the
five W’s and H in editorial writing.
____4. The conclusion of an editorial presents the factual details to bolster the opinion or
principle of the newspaper on the given issue.
____5. Like a feature story, an editorial article should have an introduction, body and
conclusion.
Today the Philippines has a population of 80 million. At the present rate of growth, this
small country, would only be most affected by the evil effect of population explosion. This
means that most of our high school students now, who would only be in their early 40’s or
50’s at that time, will be the ones to be most affected by the evil effect of population explosion.
As of today, our basic problems are food, water, housing, education and pollution. Just
imagined how these problems would be aggravated by the 150 million mouths to feed, backs
to clothe, heads to shelter and minds to educate.
The only way to avoid this situation would be through population planning.
Sad to say, many students during the Monday morning flag raising ceremonies, instead of
standing at attention while singing the National Anthem, and while reciting the Patriotic Pledge,
move around play and have completely disregarding what’s going on.
It is for this reasons that we are calling the attention of all teachers, especially the social
studies teachers to give more emphasis on teaching values, love of country, respect for the flag,
veneration of heroes, and proper behavior during flag ceremonies. If flag ceremonies cannot be
held properly, why then do we hold them at all.
The effectiveness of the “bayanihan” spirit was best shown by group of students, hundreds
of them, as they took to the streets in support of the Metro Manila clean-up and beautification
drive.
The bayanihan is an ancient Filipino custom, symbolic of the Filipino way of group work.
As found in the Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala(1745) by P. Juan de Noceda and P. Pedro de
Sccluar, the word bayanihan is derived from the rootword bayani meaning Obra comun or group
work.
Another related word, magpabayani, is a request for help by one who wants a job done for
him, and evoke response from neighbors who come in groups to offer their services in all forms

New Year Thoughts
New year is the finale of the Yuletide Season which is accompanied by the spirit of joy
and goodwill that can only be understood, never fully explained. It is enough to feel the spirit of
it- that which illumines our souls- the spirit that transform into reality that Christmas message
“Peace on earth and to men of goodwill.”
New Year is an occasion and reason for showing the fine sentiments that we feel. It is the
time for renewal of friendships, for making bonds of kinship stronger and firmer.
New Years’ time is the most fitting time to bury all grudges. It is the time to forget all
wrongs suffered and all injuries received to let bygones be bygones.
This constitutes the real essence of the season. Love, the greatest and finest of man’s
sentiments must reign in all hearts.
Activity 4. I BELIEVE. Write an editorial article about our frontliners using praise as one
function of editorials.

Manny’s imperfect record.
___3. At an early age, Toton and Jay serve as breadwinners for their families by selling
cigarettes and newspapers by day and night They present the growing number of child-
workers in poor urban communities.
___5. As the sun bids goodbye for one hot tiring day, I see on my left the green robust
hills. On my right are the unending curves and twists of the majestic landscapes of Bataan
Island. In front of me is the bluish ocean whose waves are unendingly racing towards the
rocky boarders of the hills. Sitting on a nearby century-old bench., I hear the tourists’
crunchy laughter of amazement. I feel the nearly salty breeze that flies away my anxiety. I
see persons extracting the stresses of life. God, I am in Batanes.

2. Travelogue
➢ It describes a place and the kind of people the writer met during his travel.
I’ve been there
Up, up, up went the elevator as we climbed the World Trade Center in the 25th
Street, New York City. The building made of aluminum and thick glass windows with
114 stories was extremely high.
Halt! The elevator stopped on the hundredth tenth floor. Slowly, my family and
I went out. The sight was so beautiful. You can see far-off buildings and towers that
seem to race up to the sky. The cars and people were very small like insects. From there,
I saw how busy the people of New York were. Busy cars were on the streets. That time,
there were no heavy traffic and officious people were trotting everywhere.
High-tech machineries were inside the tower. There was this computer, where
you can choose any language you want. Through this, you can explore New York
without working.
We went higher to the top floor through the escalator and wowed everything’s
so little up there. The air was so cold! I really enjoyed the whole scenery up there.
But now…it only remains in my memory. The feeling of nervousness and
happiness on a tall building is now only enclosed in a picture. However, it is relieving to
think that before it was destroyed, I had been there!
3. Personal Experience
➢ It deals with any unusual experience, usually written in the first person.

4. Informative feature
➢ It emphasizes the giving of information with the element of human interest.
It is usually taken from interview or from research materials, such as drug
problems, streets children, victims of calamities and other current issues. It
may also deal with scientific facts presented in non-technical language, or
some interesting or useful facts in other areas.
Vaccines are designed to give you immunity without the dangers of getting the
disease. It’s common to experience some mild-to-moderate side effects when receiving
vaccinations. This is because your immune system is instructing your body to react in
certain ways: it increases blood flow so more immune cells can circulate, and it raises
your body temperature in order to kill the virus.
Reported side effects of COVID-19 vaccines have mostly been mild to moderate
and have lasted no longer than a few days. Typical side effects include pain at the
injection site, fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, chills and diarrhea. The chances of
any of these side effects occurring after vaccination differ according to the specific
vaccine.
COVID-19 vaccines protect against the SARS-CoV-2 virus only, so it’s still important
to keep yourself healthy and well.
Upon receiving the vaccine, a person should be requested to stay for 15–30
minutes at the vaccination site so health workers are available in case of any immediate
reactions. Individuals should alert their local health providers following vaccination if
they experience any unexpected side effects or other health events – such as side effects
lasting more than three days. Less common side effects reported for some COVID-19
vaccines have included severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis; however, this
reaction is extremely rare.
National authorities and international bodies, including WHO, are closely
monitoring for any unexpected side effects following COVID-19 vaccine use.
There have been concerns about COVID-19 vaccines making people sick with
COVID-19. But none of the approved vaccines contain the live virus that causes
COVID-19, which means that COVID-19 vaccines cannot make you sick with
COVID-19.
After vaccination, it usually takes a few weeks for the body to build immunity
against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. So, it’s possible a person could
be infected with SARS-CoV-2 just before or after vaccination and still get sick with
COVID-19. This is because the vaccine has not yet had enough time to provide
protection.
Experiencing side effects after getting vaccinated means the vaccine is
working and your immune system is responding as it should. Vaccines are safe, and
getting vaccinated will help protect you against COVID-19.
